COMMUNICATIONS INTERN

Job Description
The Kids For Wish Kids Public Relations and Journalism internship will provide the
opportunity to work collaboratively with Development staff of Make-A-Wish
Colorado. The intern will participate in a variety of activities including the
coordination, implementation and measurement of strategic marketing programs
and projects as well as writing, public relations and media support. This
internship offers hands-on internal and external communications experience.
This is a part-time (20 hours/week) internship role at the Make-A-Wish Colorado
Chapter Office in Greenwood Village, Colorado from Monday, January 4, 2016 Friday, April 1, 2016** (schedule can be altered based on school). Students are
responsible for their own transportation and housing expenses during the
internship. Application deadline: November 1, 2015.
**With a few days of training in December 2015.

Required Skills
Qualifications: One internship is available per semester. Applicants will be
selected for an interview based on their cover letter, resume and writing sample.
Specific qualifications include:

Knowledge of the non-profit sector, media and public relations, either


through coursework or employment experience

Strong verbal and written communication skills and knowledge of AP Style

Experience with social media; digitally savvy online/social/mobile

Ability to manage time effectively

Proficiency in MS Suite and internet research tools

Knowledge of email marketing programs such as Constant Contact

Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality with wish family, celebrity


and chapter information

Strong project management skills

Some volunteer experience preferred, although not required

Primary Tasks:

Create

and

draft

news

releases,

articles,

blog

posts

and

other

communications materials

Develop daily, weekly and monthly internal communications materials for


the Kids For Wish Kids program.

Attend school fundraising events and write follow-up articles on events.

Interview wish children and families for wish stories.

Proofread, fact-check and edit communications materials

Assist with social media efforts

Research recently-granted wishes for projects and stories

Build and maintain targeted media contact databases

Perform print, broadcast and online media monitoring and measurement

Required Experience
The ideal intern will be a Junior or Senior working toward a Bachelors degree
(B.A.) or higher in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing or a
related field. S/he should also have a minimum of 1 year of professional work
experience. Knowledge of and experience with the Make-A-Wish mission and
service population is preferred.
