Reading 2
A. Read about the life of Thomas Quasthoff and choose the best option.
THOMAS QUASTHOFF
Thomas Quasthoff, 42, the acclaimed bass-baritone was born
a thalidomide baby. He is single and live in Hannover.
When I started having singing lessons at 13, nobody expected
this would be my profession. My parents and my older brother,
Michael, to whom Im very close, gave me a totally normal
childhood. Michael took me everywhere he went. Riding a
bicycle wasn`t necessarily my thing, but there were never any
restrictions put on me: I`m now a teacher and a professional
singer.
I teach singing at Detmold Musikakademie. I arrive there for my classes, which start at
10.30 am, and Ill often go through the day without a break. Usually Im Thomas,
rather than Herr Professor. Although I believe in keeping a little distance between us,
I love it when I develop friendships with students. In my experience its extremely rare
to hear something from a student which makes you go Wow! But thats fine. As a
teacher, I have to think about developing voices for the small companies not just for
Convent Garden of the Vienna State Opera.
Regarding my interests outside work, I spend a lot of time reading which is something I
really enjoy apart from music.
I buy a lot of biographies, which I read in German or English, and Im quite happy to
spend hours in a bookshop. In the past I felt the need to applause, but then I began to
feel more secure. Some people have a problem because Im honest and outspoken. But
saying whats on my mind is important to me. A journalist wrote in the Observer
recently that I look like a dwarfish sport of nature
I was so angry. I dont want to read in the newspapers about how I look. I believe Ive
reached an artistic level where its not important. But everybody, especially
interviewers, sees me and says: Oh God! Hes handicapped. He must have a lot of
problems in his past. Theyre wrong. My disability was always a fact but not a
problem.
Next year I will appear in my first opera Fidelio at Salzburg and in 2004 I have been
cast in Parsifal for Vienna- If theyre successful, then I can say Ive done everything
thats possible for a classical singer, Ive won a Grammy, I sing at Carnegie Hall and I
work with the most incredible conductors: Simon Rattle, Claudio Abbado, Zubin Mehta
and Colin Davis. Now other things are coming more into the foreground friends,
holidays, my private life. Im planning to go sailing in the Caribbean.
I couldnt live without music and I love what Im doing, but not so that I wont know
when its time to stop. Success come and goes. You can`t hold onto it. I think thats a
good thing.

V. WRITING SECTION
(20 points)
Read this topic, and write your answer in 120 150 words.
Students at universities often have a choice of places to live. They may choose to live in
university dormitories, or they may choose to live in apartments in the community.
Compare the advantages of living in university housing with the advantages of living in
an apartment in the community. Where would you prefer to live? Give reasons for your
preference.
Tips:
-
When the students go to the university and dont are of the province, they must live in
apartments of the university or the community. Most of students prefer live in apartments in
the community because they have more freedom.
The apartments rent are more expensive depending the neighborhood. Living in university
students may pay the rent per semester, but in apartment, they have to pay each month.
Living in university students could be quieter than living in apartments. The apartments in
the university sometimes are more insurance, because these are inside of this.
In my opinion I prefer university dormitories because its more insurance and near of the
university than apartments in the community. But the disadvantage is that you dont live
alone, you live with a partner and the rules of the university doesnt allow carry more people
to the dormitories.
