Introduction

Human act in their own best interest. They make rational choices consistent with
their preferences. Millions of humans overindulge in food and drink, pay taxes too soon,
procrastinate, and save or exercise too little. But one of the most consistent choice of a
person is to smoke cigarette.
This over usage of tobacco product is a global dilemma and its getting worse
every year. According to the website ash.org.uk, there are about 10 million adults who
smoke cigarettes in Great Britain, this is about a sixth of the total UK population. In
Great Britain 22% of adult men and 17% of adult women are smokers. Smoking rates
have more than halved since 1974 when 51% of men and 41% of women smoke.
According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention survey, nearly 18 of every 100
American adults aged 18 years or older (17.8%) currently smoke cigarettes. This means
an estimated 42.1 million adults in the United States currently smoke cigarettes.
Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the United
States, accounting for more than 480,000 deaths every year, or 1 of every 5 deaths.
More than 16 million Americans live with a smoking-related disease. Current smoking
has declined from nearly 21 of every 100 adults (20.9%) in 2005 to nearly 18 of every
100 adults (17.8%) in 2013. In the Philippines twenty-eight percent or 17.3 million
Filipino adults age 15 years and older are current tobacco smokers, according to the
results of the 2009 Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS). Almost half (48 percent or
14.6 million) of adult males and 9 percent (2.8 million) of adult females are current
smokers. Moreover, 23 percent of Filipino adults are daily tobacco smokers: 38 percent
for males and 7 percent for females. Among adults who smoked 12 months before the

survey, 48 percent made a quit attempt, while only 5 percent made a quit attempt and
successfully quit smoking.
Knowing the danger that cigarette smoking can cause, the phenomenon still
continues. According to the American Cancer Society, everyday more children engage
in smoking cigarette and sadly most of them is under the age 18. Nicotine, the primary
chemical present in cigarettes which is highly addictive. This chemical can damage
blood circulation, nervous system, lungs, heart, muscles and for pregnant women the
future of their child will be in risk. Because of this, cigarettes carry serious health risks,
which are more prevalent than with other tobacco products. Because of these people
that engage to cigarette smoking suffer from different problems like; coughing spells,
shortness of breath, even when not exercising wheezing or gasping, more frequent
headaches, increased phlegm (mucus) etc. Too much smoking can affect all the system
of our body. The nervous system it can make one person more stressed than ever. The
respiratory system, there are illnesses like bronchospasm and asthma. The
gastrointestinal system is also affected, illnesses like gastroesophageal reflux disease,
peptic ulcer disease and halitosis will be formed. Even the heart, cardiovascular illness
like atherosclerosis, thrombosis. And lastly, it also affect immune system illnesses like
otitis media, sinusitis, pneumonia and rhinitis can destroy ones immune system.
According to the 2012 Surgeon Generals Report: Of every three young smokers, only
one will quit, and one of those remaining smokers will die from tobacco-related causes.
Most of these young people never considered the long-term health consequences
associated with tobacco use when they started smoking; and nicotine, a highly addictive
drug, causes many to continue smoking well into adulthood, often with deadly

consequences." Worst Case scenario of anyone that is addicted to cigarette smoking is


having a lung cancer. Over 1.2 million every year are the incidents of lung cancer
around the globe.
Lots of people are engaging to cigarette smoking, even the authorities are trying
to stop this menace. They even increase the price of the tobacco products. They
increase the tax to be pay by anyone who will buy these products. The also promote
awareness about the danger the chemicals found in that cylinder stick. They conduct
seminars in different places and they discuss the bad effects of this tobacco products.
They even request the tobacco companies to print disgusting pictures of the effect of
too much smoking and put it on cigarette cases. These solutions target to minimize the
number of smoker, help them quit smoking and save more lives as much as possible.

Objectives:
Cigarette smoking is global phenomenon. Lots of people all over the world is addicted to
this, yet most of them are not aware of the danger and damage this little cylinder stick
can do. These are the objectives of this case study:
1. Gives enough information about the cigarette smoking; how it is created
and why too many people is addicted to this kind of vice.
2. Let the reader be aware of the effects of cigarette smoking; Awareness of
the diseases you can get from over usage of cigarette.
3. Allows the reader to realize how tobacco products affect the world.
4. Awareness of how tobacco products affect the youth.

Definition of Terms
a.

Cigarette - small cylinder of finely cut tobacco leaves rolled in thin paper for
smoking. It is ignited at one end and allowed to smolders; its smoke is inhaled from

the other end, which is held in or to the mouth.


b. Bronchospasm - refers to airway irritability or the abnormal tightening of the
airways of the lungs
c. Atherosclerosis - process in which fat and cholesterol form plaques and stick to
the walls of an artery. These plaques reduce the bloods flow through the artery.
d. Thrombosis - process that results in the formation of a clot inside a blood vessel.
Normally, clots form inside blood vessels to stop bleeding, when vessels have
been injured.
e. Gastrointestinal system - responsible for digesting food, absorbing nutrients, and
dispensing of waste products. It includes the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small
and large intestines, and the anus. These continuous parts are all easily affected
by tobacco smoke
f. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease - includes symptoms of heartburn and acid
regurgitation from the stomach.
g. Peptic ulcers - self-digested holes extending into the muscular layers of the
esophagus, stomach, and a portion of the small intestine. These ulcers form when
excess acid is produced.
h. Halitosis - bad breathe
i. Otitis Media - inflammation of the middle ear. The middle ear is the space
immediately behind the eardrum
j. Sinusitis - sinus inflammation. Sinuses are spaces in the skull that are in direct
communication with the nose and mouth.
k. Rhinitis. - an inflammation of the inner lining of the nasal passages and results in
symptoms of sneezing, congestion, runny nose, and itchy eyes, ears, and nose
l. Pneumonia - an inflammation of the lining of the lungs. This inflammation causes
fluid to accumulate deep in the lung, making it an ideal region for bacterial growth

m. Nicotine - a toxic colorless or yellowish oily liquid that is the chief active
constituent of tobacco. It acts as a stimulant in small doses, but in larger amounts
blocks the action of autonomic nerve and skeletal muscle cells.

Robles: Sorry if nakakaistorbo ako but I'd like to ask you severals question if you dont
mind.
Interviewee: Yea, sure. Para saan ba yan?
Robles: Para po sa case study ko po sa ethics. My topic is all about Cigarette Smoking.
If ok lang po, can you answer me in english?
Interviewee: Yea sure, I think I can handle that.
Robles: Thank you po. So my question is do you smoke? Since when?
Interviewee: Yes, when I was 14 years old.
Robles: In a very young age of 14 years old, why did you start smoking?
Interviewee: I was told to try it and I felt good so I continued smoking
Robles: How many sticks you consume every day?
Interviewee: I normally consume three sticks a day. The most number of cigarettes I
smoke within a day is 10 which is a half pack of cigarette.
Robles: Any bad effects to your health?
Interviewee: I can't really say i didn't have any disease that is brought by smoking and I
can't say that it is the cause of my poor stamina.

Robles: Does smoking affect your health?


Interviewee: Yes it does. It helps my mental health because when I smoke I feel
relieved. It is my stress reliever I must say.
Robles: Do you feel weak when you are not smoking? Why?
Interviewee: Not really weak but frequently when a day had pass and I did not smoke
anything my throat feels dry. Im excited to smoke a stick again, that feeling
Robles: If you will stop smoking? What will the method you will use to prevent the urge
of smoking?
Interviewee:
Robles: Did you attempt to quit smoking?
Interviewee: Yes, I did but after a month I can't resist the urge of smoking.
Robles: Why can't you resist?
Interviewee: It's a mannerism once you got it, its hard not to do it and as I said it is my
stress reliever.
Robles: This will be my last question, Will you complete stop smoking?
Interviewee: Id love to but I cant.
