Purpose
The Superior Group of Colleges (SGC) recognizes that their staff is fundamental to its
success. To enable all staff to become effective and efficient in their role as quickly as
possible, it is essential that all staff new to the SGC, or the role, receive a timely induction.
The Staff Orientation and Induction Policy sets out the SGC commitment to engage new staff
effectively with the University, their Faculty and to ensure Managers, Academic Heads and
staff to understand the importance of orientation and induction, and their responsibilities.
Scope
This policy and procedure covers all activities that form part of the Training and
Development process. It is applicable to all new staff except casual/Supporting staff. In order
for the policy and procedure to be effective it is essential that any employee who is involved
in any aspect of the training and development of staff is aware of this document and follows
it. Ultimately it is the responsibility of the senior management in the Superior Group of
Colleges, including Heads of Departments, in conjunction with HR.
Objectives
Objectives for new employees:

Gain sufficient knowledge and skills to become productive employees within the local
workplace.
Be informed of the work units policies and procedures and application to facilitate
rapid assimilation into the work environment.
Discuss performance goals and personal development.
Enable new staff to understand and achieve what is expected of them during their
probationary period of employment.

DEFINITIONS
Orientation

Refers to the informal workplace introduction and familiarization conducted by the


individual work unit. Orientation includes, but is not limited to, introducing new staff
to relevant people within the organization and to assist the new staff member to
become comfortable and capable in their role.
Induction
The interactions and activities which assist new staff members to take up their position
effectively and engage them in the work of the Faculty and staff they have joined.

POLICY

Welcomes employees as valued new staff members.


Ensures that there is a clear understanding of the job, as defined in the Job
description, and how duties are carried out with safe work practices.
Helps employees understand their part in the working of the whole organization,
including expected behaviors and responsibilities.
Helping the staff member to understand the organizational structure, how
management decisions are made and communicated and what role they have in
decision-making processes.
Matching the new staff member with an experienced staff member who can act as a
mentor and contact person for the new staff member.
Staff joining the SGC must participate in an effective orientation and induction
program so that they understand the institution, their work environment, and their
role and responsibilities.
Staff with leadership and management responsibilities must ensure that all faculty &
staff reporting to them participate in an effective orientation and induction program.
The Head of Human Resource Department and Head of Hiring and Development must
ensure that orientation program is available and provided to all new employees.
HR Department/Head of Hiring and Development will provide orientation for
academic staff to teaching and administrative staff.
Faculties and administrative staff must ensure induction program are available and
provided to all new staff and that an appropriate induction plan is prepared for each
new staff member.
The new staff member and their immediate manager must ensure attendance and
participation in the orientation and induction activities provided.

Procedure
To assist in preparing and conducting new staff through the induction in their workplace
there is a Workplace Orientation Checklist (Attached). It is important to begin
working through the form prior to the commencement date to ensure the possible start on
their first day.
Responsibilities
The Head of Hiring and Development (or nominee) is responsible for:

providing day-to-day assistance and advice to GM Human Resource about this policy
and procedure
Ensuring that new staff members are aware of the requirements to participate in the
induction process.
Coordinating the orientation & induction of new staff and arranging regular Induction
sessions, developing, monitoring and reviewing the Orientation & Induction process;
and ensuring the Induction Policy and Procedure is reviewed.

New Faculty & Staff members have a responsibility to participate in the Orientation &
induction process when requested.
