Thepollutantsinsewagearemeasuredinordertobetterunderstandandthusfacilitatethetreatmentofsewageaswell
astoexaminetheeffectsofeffluentortreatedsewageontheenvironment.
Effluentfromallpublicsewagetreatmentplantsissampledatregularintervalsandtestedinmodernlaboratoriesto
ensurethatitmeetstherequiredstandards.Testsarecarriedoutaspartofamonitoringprogrammeinkeepingwith
IndahWater'soperationallicenseconditionsandtoensuretheefficientoperationoftreatmentprocesses.
ThisprovidesforacleanerandsaferenvironmentthatimprovesthelivingconditionsofMalaysians.Thetwomost
importantparametersmeasuredareBiochemicalOxygenDemand(BOD)andSuspendedSolids(SS).
BODisameasureoftheamountofoxygenthatsewageconsumesoveragiventime.HighBODissignificantbecauseit
meansthatsewagewillrapidlyconsumeallthenaturallydissolvedoxygeninstreams,riversandlakes,thuskillingoffall
aquaticlife,andrenderingthewatersepticandfoulsmelling.SSisameasureoftheundissolvedmaterialinsewage.
HighSSleadstosludgedepositsinthewaterways,thuscausingsignificantenvironmentaldeterioration.
EffluentthatisdischargedupstreamofawatersupplyintakeshouldmeetStandardA,whileeffluentthatisdischarged
downstreamhastomeetStandardB.ThesestandardsaresetbytheEnvironmentalQualityAct1974.
