Attention: Mr. Nick Ni

Subject: SupplementalGeotechnicalReport
RevisedTentativeTract No. 53426,9503Andora Avenue,
City of Los Angeles,Califomia

Mr. Ni,

ln accordancewith your request,we have preparedthis report to addressrevisionsto the

Tentative Tract Map (provided to our office on by the project civil engineerRobert Kameoka).

Theserevisionspromptedsupplementalgeologicmapping, laboratorytesting of samplesalready

obtained from previous investigation, and slope stability analyses. The results of the

aforementioneditems are includedin this report.

Tentative Tract Map Revisions

The most recent plan we have is an undatedTentative Tract Map by Robert Kameoka

2008 revision. This map, revisedfrom the plan usedin our

with a note indicatinga September,

May 20, 2003 report (seeReferences),calls for constructionof 45 residentiallots and 3 open

spacelots. While there appearsto be arearrangementof someof the lot lines, and an additional

pad (Lot 37) andassociated35 feet tall2:l gradientcut slopein the extremenorthwestportion of

the tentativetract, the significant changesto be addressedin this report are the introduction of

slopes. For the purposesof discussion, the height of the retaining walls is included in the total

height of the slope. The map proposesan approximately 115 feet tall 1:l gradient cut slope

ascendingabovethe proposedprivate streetin the vicinity of lots 25-27, and an approximately

71 feet tall 1:1 gadient cut slope ascendingabovethe proposedprivate streetin the vicinity of

lots 30-36. Evaluationof the global stability of thesefwo slopesis discussedin this report.

SlopeStabilitv

We haveevaluatedthe global stabilityof the tallestproposedI : I cut slopeusing strength

values determinedthrough principles of rock mechanics, including six unconfined compression

testson samplesrecoveredduring an earlier investigation(Bl and B2). Bedding and structural

discontinuitieswere mappedby our geologist in the areasof the proposedcut slopes. The earth

materials in the vicinity of the proposed cut slopes consist of thickly-bedded to massive,

cemented, medium and coarse grained sandstoneassignedto the Cretaceous-ageChatsworth

Formation. The areas in question are charactenzedby resistant sandstonecliffs and slopes

locally as steepas l:1 (horizontal to vertical) gradient(which made drilling accessto this area

impossible). The beddingstrikes approximatelynortheastand dips approximatelyl5-25 degrees

to the northwest. Basedon our recentgeologic mappingthis areaappearsdevoid of fine-grained

beds, and infrequent, steepjoints were mapped. Beddingwill be supportedin the proposedl:l

cut slopes.

The shearstrengthof the rock masswas modeledusing a Hoek-Brown failure envelope

developedconsideringthe averageunconfined compressiontest values of intact rock samples,

structuralgeologic data, and rock quality (RQD) determinedfrom the two borings (Bl and 82)

collected from an approximately 80 feet thick section of bedrock stratigraphicallybelow the

section of bedrock in the area of the proposed cut slopes. Photographsof the cores taken

cut slopes,

The strengthvalues derived from the Hoek-Brown failure criterion were applied to 2-O

limit equilibriumslopestabilityanalyses.Thesevaluescorrelateto an angleof intemalfrrction:

56 degrees,and a cohesionof 27,000poundsper squarefeet. Stability analysesof proposed

slopes were performed using the computer software entitled SLIDE (version 5.038) by

Rocscience (2008). This software performs limit-equilibrium slope stability analyses.

Program ouput includes a description of the problem, including material boundaries, material

properties,earttrquakeloading, searchingcriteria, and analysismethod. Graphicaldepictions

of the ten most critical failure surfaces(or all surfacesbelow a critical safety factor where

applicable)and all failure surfacesconsideredare presentedon the first two sheetsof each

analysis. Static and pseudostaticcalculationsproducehigh factors of safety. Thesecalculations

are included herein in Appendix A. The proposedcut slopesare thus anticipatedto exposehard

cementedstratawithout shearedzonesor weak beds, and are expectedto perform well without

additional stabilization measures. They should be carefully mapped during grading to verify

strength and continuity of bedding. If weak beds are encountered, supplemental

recommendationsmav be warranted.

Closure

This geotechnical report has been prepared in accordancewith generally accepted

engineeringpracticesat this time and location. No other warrantiesas to the professionaladvice

providedunder the terms of our agreementand includedin this report are expressedor implied.

This limitationis imposedto avoidnumerical 430 1050
errors
which may resultfrom too many slices,or too

-107 = Total drivingmomentor

total drivingforce is negative. This will occur
if the wrong failuredirectionis specified,
or if high externalor anchorloads are applied
againstthe failuredirection.

-108 = Totaldrivingmoment
or total drivingforce < 0.1. This is to
limit the calculationof extremelyhigh safety
factors if the drivingforce is very small
(0.1 is an arbitrarynumber).

-111 = safetyfactor equationdid not converge

-1000 = No valid slip surfacesare generated

at a grid center. Unableto draw a surface.
