Rafael Escamilla, PhD, PT, is a distinguished professor of
physical therapy at California State University, Sacramento (CSUS). He is also the co-director of the CSUS Biomechanics Laboratory, where he studies the science of the movement of the human body in an attempt to better understand performance enhancement and injury prevention. He teaches many courses in the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program, such as pathokinesiology, therapeutic exercise, and a certified strength and conditioning certification course. The DPT program is part of the College of Health and Human Services at CSUS.

athletics since his early teens. In high school, he was a wrestler, football, and track and was the awarded the most valuable player in football, the most inspirational players in both wrestling and track, won an award in boxing, and was chosen the Outstanding Athlete at Clarkston high school.
