Growing Deeply

Sunday Sermon

a daily scripture guide

Week of October 5 October 10

MONDAY: Luke 8:40-50 On the way

REFLECTION: Jairus asks Jesus to come to his house to heal his dying daughter.
On the way there, a woman interrupts his journey. Perhaps you put in a request
to Jesus, but the time lingers. Imagine, like in this story, he is on the way
PRAYER: Waiting is so hard. When I pray to you, hidden in my request is
immediacy. Help me to wait on you. I know you are on the way with an answer:
Yes, No, or Not Now.
TUESDAY: Luke 8:40-50 Risking to trust Jesus
REFLECTION: The woman did not know what would happen if she reached
Jesus; however, she risked trusting him. How might you do the same? Risk
trusting Jesus with your life, a situation, your child, your schooling, etc.
PRAYER: God, give me the courage today to risk trusting you with ___________.
WEDNESDAY: Luke 8:40-50 She touched him
REFLECTION: The woman touched Jesuss robe, and she was healed. Something
happens with faith and action. Was it the robe that healed her? Was it faith
that stopped her illness? Perhaps it was both. Which do you experience more
offaith or action?
SONG: He Touched Me United Methodist Hymnal #367
THURSDAY: Numbers 11:18-23,31-33 Wilderness: the back drop
REFLECTION: When you are reading Numbers, think journey journey
through the wilderness of life. This wilderness setting presents problems and
possibilities for shaping a community identity for the newly redeemed people
of God. The period of wandering is a necessary buffer between liberation and
landedness for the sake of forming this identity. Such a process does not unfold
easily for Israel or for God. The people have been taken out of Egypt, but it
proves difficult to take Egypt out of the people. The familiar orderliness of
Egypt seems preferable to the insecurities of life lived from one oasis to the
next. From workingpreacher.com
ACTION: How has a journey in the wilderness shaped your faith?

Reaching Out - October 4

Scripture: Luke 8:40-50 (MSG)

On his return, Jesus was welcomed by a crowd. They were all there
expecting him. A man came up, Jairus by name. He was president of the
meeting place. He fell at Jesus feet and begged him to come to his home
because his twelve-year-old daughter, his only child, was dying. Jesus went
with him, making his way through the pushing, jostling crowd. In the crowd
that day there was a woman who for twelve years had been afflicted with
hemorrhages. She had spent every penny she had on doctors but not one
had been able to help her. She slipped in from behind and touched the edge
of Jesus robe. At that very moment her hemorrhaging stopped. Jesus said,
Who touched me? When no one stepped forward, Peter said, But Master,
weve got crowds of people on our hands. Dozens have touched you. Jesus
insisted, Someone touched me. I felt power discharging from me. When
the woman realized that she couldnt remain hidden, she knelt trembling
before him. In front of all the people, she blurted out her storywhy she
touched him and how at that same moment she was healed. Jesus said,
Daughter, you took a risk trusting me, and now youre healed and whole.
Live well, live blessed! While he was still talking, someone from the
leaders house came up and told him, Your daughter died. No need now to
bother the Teacher. Jesus overheard and said, Dont be upset. Just trust
me and everything will be all right.

My Notes:

FRIDAY: Numbers 11:18-23,31-33 Not enough

REFLECTION: After complaining for food, God provides manna. When manna
was not enough, God answers the plea for meat.
Prayer: Catch me when I am complaining. Help me to turn that which I deem
insufficient into a hope and dream that I am willing to invest in.
SATURDAY: Numbers 11:18-23,31-33 When God provides more than you expect
REFLECTION: Gods provision was Through the nose! LOL! What if we saw this
story as one that encourages and reminds us that God can do more than we
expect, ask, think or imagine?
ACTION: For what would you ask God, knowing God could do it and more?
