Clutch
Thedry,hydraulicsingleplateclutchusedinthepreviousmodelwasalsousedinthismodelwiththefollowingchanges:
Theresinwashereddamper,usedinthe1993MR2tofurtherimprovequietness,wasalsousedwiththemastercylinder
clevisoftheCorollawiththe7AFEengine.
TheCorollaequippedwiththe7AFEengineusedaturnovermechanismintheclutchpedalassemblytoreducethe
pedalload.ThisfeaturewasnotavailableonvehicleswiththeABSortheftdeterrentsystem.

AutomaticTransaxle
The4AFEenginemodelswereequippedwiththesameA131LautomatictransaxlepreviouslyusedintheSTDandDLX
grades.ArecentlydevelopedA245Eautomatictransaxlewasusedinthemodelsequippedwiththe7AFEengine.TheA245E
wasafourspeedwithalockuptypetorqueconverterandhadtheElectronicallyControlledTransmissionfeature.Itwas
basedontheA240Eusedinthe1989MR2,butwasreducedinsizeandweight.

TheA245EautomatictransaxlewasbasedontheA240E,andthefollowingchangesweremadetoreduceitssizeandweight,
andtofurtherimprovetheshiftfeel,fuelefficiencyanddynamicperformance.
Thecounterdrivegearwhichwassupportedatbothendsintheconventionaltransaxlewassupportedatoneendinthis

transaxle.TheNo.2vehiclespeedsensorandsensorrotorwereeliminatedtoreducethewightandoveralllength.
Modificationstothe2ndcoastbrakepositionandthevalvebodymountingareadeducedtheoverallheightofthe
transaxle.
Theaccumulatorandtheoilpassageswerechangedtofurtherimprovetheshiftfeel.
Thethrottlevalveopeningwasdividedinto32stepstoimprovefuelefficiencyandsmoothperformance.

TheplanetarygearunitoftheA245EwasthesameinbasicconstructionandoperationasthatoftheA240E.The
specificationsoftheplanetarygearunitoftheA245Eweremodifiedtoensurebettermatchingwiththe7AFEengine
characteristics.Inaddition,thesupportingmethodsofthecounterdrivegearandthepositionofthe2ndcoastbrakepiston
werechanged.

wassupportedatonlyoneendbyataperedrollerbearingtoreducetheoveralllengthofthetransaxle.

TheaccumulatorconsistedofC1,C2,C3,B2andB4asintheA240E.WhiletheC1accumulatorpistonoftheA240Ewas
activatedonlybythespringtension,theC1intheA245Ewasactivatedbythespringtensionaswellasthebackpressure,as
wereC2,C3orB2.Lenghtheningthestrokeofallaccumulatorpistonsreducedtheshiftshock.

TransmissionElectronicControlSystem
TheelectroniccontrolsystemofthisCorollawasbasicallythesameasthatoftheA241Eforthe'93MR2.Intheelectronic
controlsystemforthe1993Corolla,theNo.2vehiclespeedsensorwaseliminatedalongwiththesensorrotorthatdrivethat
sensortosimplifythesystem.Thethrottlevalveopeningwasnowdividedinto32ratherthanonly8toprovidemoredetailed
shiftdownandshiftupcontroltofurtherimprovetheshiftresponse.

TheselfdiagnosisfortheA245Eforthe1993CorollawasbasicallythesameasthatfortheA241Eforthe'93MR2.SinceNo.
2vehiclespeedsensorwaseliminated,No.61diagnostictroublecodewasdiscontinuedaccordingly.

DriveShafts
Asinthepreviousmodel,alownoise,vibrationresistantdriveshaftwasused.AtripodtypeCVJ(ConstantVelocityJoint)
wasfittedonthedifferentialsideandaRzeppatypeCVJwasfittedonthewheelside.

Axles
Thefrontaxle(left)hadthesamebasicconstructionandoperationasthepreviousmodel.It
alsousedadoublerowangularballbearingwithlowrollingresistance.
Likethefrontaxle,thebasicconstructionandoperationoftherearaxlewerethesameasin
thepreviousmodel.Unlikethepreviousmodel,however,thesizeofthebearingwas
increasedandcombinedwiththeoilsealforgreaterdurabilityandserviceability.
Therearaxlewasconstructedinthesamewayasthe1992Camry.
