Three sedimentary formations of Kibaran age have been idcntified in SW Angola: the CahamaOtchinjau Formation, the Chela Group and the Leba-Tchamalindi Formation.
The Cahama-Otchinjau Formation is intruded by red granites which are also found as boulders
within the Chela Group basal conglomerate. These granites yielded the following Rb-Sr ages: Matala
region t = 1350 2 65 Ma, X7Sr/X"Sr,= 0.716 2 0.003; Ompupa region t = 1407 t 26 Ma. "Srl
9 r , = 0.7058 ? 0.0020; Otchinjau region t = 1411 k 24 Ma, x7Sr/""Sr, = 0.7052 2 0.0012; Chitado
region t = 1302 t- 20 Ma, "'SriX"Sr, = 0.7075 t 0.0016.
The red granites are cut by basic dykes of different compositions and ages. Thc noritic dolerites
which are intrusive i n the Chela Group yielded a good Rb-Sr isochron at t = 1119 i 27 Ma. "'Sr/
*('Sr, = 0.7044 2 0.0010. This age postdates the deposition of the Chela Group and of the Leba
Tchamalindi Formation.
These formations of Kibaran age extend to Namibia where they outcrop near the border. Their
extension to the central and northeastern Angola is not yet well defined. Regarding the centralwestern region some metasediments outcrops are considered by several authors to belong to the Bale
Group of Eburnean age or to the Oendolongo (s.s.) Group. It is assumed in this paper that some of
the referred metasediments outcrops belong to the Bale Group while the others belong to the
Oendolongo (s.s.) Group to which we suggest a Kibaran age. Concerning the eastern region we admit
that the mctasediments belonging to the Malombe and Luana Groups which arc intruded by basic
and granitoid rocks may be of Kibaran age. A more accurate establishment of the stratigraphy of this
area will only be possible after isotope determinations, mainly on the basic rocks to define whether
they belong to one o r other of the two thermotectonic events already detected in Zaire at 200&2220
Ma and 901 30 Ma.

metasediments have been eroded or exhibit sharp valleys. Whereas Rocks of the
Cahama region have also been studied by Simoes (in Carvalho 1969) who reports
the existence of a basal conglomerate consisting of quartz and quartzite unsorted
pebbles in a quartz-feldspathic matrix.
Intrusive into the Cahama-Otchinjau metasediments occur the SW red granites
which at the contact become granite porphyries (1300-1400 Ma).
Taking into account the field evidence and the stratigraphic position proposed
by Torquato and Salgueiro (1977), it can be assumed that the age of the Cahama
metasediments lies between 1700 and 1300 Ma.

(1966). The area of occurrence of these rocks are marked on the maps of Figure
1. They are identified from North to South as the massives of Matala, Ompupa,
Otchinjau, and Chitado. Bassot ef al. (1981) have reported an age of 1350 ? 65
Ma with initial X7Sr/X"Sr= 0.7157 2 0.0030 for a porphyritic facies of Matala
granitoid. The authors have interpreted this age as that of the intrusion of the
pluton in the metasediments. The high initial X7Sr/X6Sr
ratio shows an origin by
anatectic melting of the crust.
The Ompupa red granite is in contact with the basement and the GabbroAnorthosite Complex; i t is overlain by the Chela Formation. Analytical results

1c. Dolerites
Dolerite sills and dykes are intrusive in the SW red granites (Carvalho and
Sim6es 1971) and in the Eburnean granitoid rocks (Figures 3 and 7). The main
direction of these dykes is N 60"W. They present ophitic or sub-ophitic texture
and contain as essential minerals labradorite, labradorite-andesine, titaniferous
augite, pigeonite and olivine. Hornblende, sphene, epidote and scarce orthopyroxene are present in small amounts (Alfonso and Albuquerque 1972, Silva and
Simdes 1982).
Isotopic dating by KiAr method carried out on rocks from Vila Paiva Couceiro
by Silva et al. (1973) give the results shown in Table 3 . Silva suggests that the
probable age of the dolerite magmatism is around 1200 Ma. In fact, this age is
reliable since field observations show that these dolerites are intrusive in the red
granites (c. 1300 Ma) and are intruded by the noritic dolerites (c. I100 Ma)
discussed later.
1d. Leba-Tchamalindi Formation and Chela Group

divided it into the Leba Formation and the Chela Group, both occurring to the

has only been observed in the extreme areas (Figure 3 ) , unlike the noritic sills
which are more abundant in the central area.
The Chela Group is characterised by subhorizontal beds and by the development
of fault scarps having NE-SW, NW-SE, NS and EW directions as main trends,
as already noted by several authors. The lithology of the Chela Group is composed
of conglomerates, quartzites, sandstones, siltstones, shales, acid-alkaline volcanics
and volcano-sedimentary rocks (Correia 1976). At the base, both in the conglomerates and other rocks, clasts and other materials from the SW red granites are
present. These occurrences can be observed in the southwestern region of Vila
de Almoster. Near the Namibia border (Iona and Oncocua Explanatory Notice
1961), the basal conglomerate is overlain by quartzites, sandstones and shales. In
that area the beds dip steeply (about 40"-50") possibly due to their occurrence in
a Mesozoic unstable tectonic zone which corresponds to the actual Kunene River
bed (Carvalho 1983). The Chela basal conglomerate also contains clasts from the
Gabbro-Anorthosite Complex, from the Schist-quartzitic-amphibolitic Complex
and from pre-Eburnean granitoid rocks. Taking this information into account, it
can be inferred that the age of the Chela Group lies between 130@1400 Ma (age
of the SW red granites whose clasts are enclosed in the basal conglomerate) and
1119 ? 27 Ma (age of the noritic dolerites, intrusive in the Chela Group).
The Leba-Tchamalindi Formation is underlain by the Chela Group, probably
as a slight unconformity or as a disconformity (Correia 1976). According to
Correia, in spite of the controversy about such unconformity, there is a lithologic
discontinuity in the Leba region where no gradual transition between the two
distinct types of sedimentation is observed. Lithologically the Leba Formation is
composed of sedimentary rocks of chemical origin, such as stromatolitic dolomites,
occurring as subhorizontal beds (Correia 1976). In the Tchamalindi region the
limestone is dense and massive, being underlain by quartzites and conglomerates
of the Chela Group (Iona and Oncocua Explanatory Notice 1961).
Several authors have correlated the Leba-Tchamalindi Formation with PanAfrican rocks of NW Angola and Namibia. Nevertheless, the noritic dolerites are
younger than the Chela Group and the Leba-Tchamalindi Formation (Correia
1976) and their age is 1119 ? 27 Ma (Figure 6). With this in mind, the assumption
of a Pan-African age for the Leba-Techamalindi Formation does not seem to be
plausible, since the deposition of those rocks took place before c. 1100 Ma.

Central-western region
The region comprises of the area between the parallels 12" and 16" S and the
meridians 15" and 17" E. Though it has not been mapped in detail, in those areas
where mining was being carried out by the late Companhia Mineira do Lobito,
the documentation left by H. R . Korpershoek (unpublished) and by the geologists
of Sofreminas provides valuable data. However, concerning the stratigraphic
position of some units, especially those of sedimentary origin, some discrepancies
still remain. Some outcrops which according to Korpershoek belong to the Bale
Group of Eburnean age, in Bassot's opinion belong to the Oendolongo (s.3). It
is maintained in this paper that not all outcrops of the Bale Group are Eburnean,
as defended by Korpershoek, neither all Oendolongo (s.5) outcrops are postEburnean as considered by Bassot et al. (1981). Dolerites occur in this region
according to the regional trend of the SW noritic dolerites (Figure 9). They have
been correlated with the latest event by Korpershoek (unpublished).
3. North-eastern region
Between the north-eastern region and the west-central region there exists a thick
Cenozoic cover which limits the observation of the continuity of the Kibaran
rocks. However, in the eastern most part of Angola, in the valleys of the hydrographic basins of the Kasai and Zambeze Rivers, there are outcrops of older
rocks, some of probable Kibaran age.
3a. Metasediments
The Luana and the Lower Malombe Groups consist of metasedimentary rocks,
such as conglomerates, schists, graywackes, sandstones and quartzites which occur
as beds with SW-NE strike and 25"SE maximum dip (Monforte 1960). Dykes or
sills of basic and granitoid rocks are intrusive in these metasediments.

4. Discussion
The possible correlation between eruptive rocks from N E Angola and other rocks
already described, allows an analysis of the data to be made.
Monforte (1960) and Rodrigues and Pereira (1974) consider the Luana Group
as Pan African in age, and accordingly, basic and granitoid rocks intrusives in
99
Group would be also Pan-African in age or younger. On the other hand, Monforte
(1960) refers to basic rocks (gabbros, diorites and dolerites) in North Lunda region
which have different ages, though they have the same lithology and type of
occurrence. Rodrigues (1974), based on field observations, also suggests that the
different petrographic types result from intrusions which occurred in three distinct
phases: pre-Cambrian, pre-Permian and Mesozoic.
Isotope ages determined for basic pre-Mesozoic rocks from Angola (Carvalho
et ul. 1983) and Zaire (Cahen et al. 1984) range from c. 1000 Ma to 2000
Ma, which has led Cahen et ul. (1984) to admit the existence of an important
thermotectonic event around 220&2000 Ma and another less strong and later
event, at 991 t 30 Ma. Thus, the two events proposed by Cahen et al. (1984)
could account for the occurrence of basic rocks lithologically similar, but different
in age, in eastern Angola and southwest Zaire. The ages for the Zaire Lulua
Group basic rocks are 1473 i 33, 1461 i 33, 1423 k 20, 1356 t 3, 1217 29,
1130 i 30, 1126 +- 27, 1092 +- 30 and 991 t 30 Ma (Cahen et al. 1984). Besides,
one sample from the Lulua Group analysed five different times yielded 2087 -+ 36
Ma. The same authors are not certain about that age, not only due to the chemical
composition of the sample but also because other ages between 1474 t 23 Ma
and 2078 +- 36 Ma were not found for the Lulua lavas. For basic rocks from the
NE (South Lunda) in Angola (Carvalho et af. 1983), K-Ar ages of 1490 2 40,
1338 -f 38, 1360 t 40 and 1320 t 36 Ma have been determined.
For the reasons given above it is admissible that the basic rocks older than c.
1300 Ma may correspond to the first event referred by Cahen et af. (1984) around
2000 Ma similar in age to the Eburnean orogeny. The basic Precambrian rocks
of Monforte (1960) and Rodrigues (1974) may have undergone argon loss during
the second event. The remaining basic rocks would correspond to this second
event around 1000 Ma, corresponding to the Kibaran, and to the pre-Permian
basic rocks of Monforte and Rodrigues. According to Delhal et al. (1966) the
Lulua basic volcanism in Zaire is older than the cataclastic quartzites; on the other
hand, the same quartzites of the Luana Group which occur in Angola (North
Lunda) are older than the basic rocks (Rodrigues 1974). According to Monforte
and Rodrigues and Pereira (1973) the Luana Group is related to the 'Schistogreseux of the Congo Occidental' sequence i.e., of Pan-African age. So, the basic
and granitoid rocks intrusive into them might be Pan-African or even younger.
Nevertheless, no Pan-African ages have been recorded in basic rocks from Zaire
and Angola. On the other hand, correlation of the Luana and Lower Malombe
Groups with Lulua Group of Zaire, seem to be only possible with the portion
that outcrops in the Kasadi-Sadi region. In fact, Delhal (1958) considers the
Kasadi-Sadi Formation as an entity younger than the Lulua Group. It is noteworthy
that the Kasadi-Sadi pillow lava has yielded a WAr (whole rock) age of 926 t 30
Ma (Cahen et af. 1984). While isotope dating for the basic rocks from Lunda is
not available it seems to be reasonable to admit that they are pre-Permian in age
and possibly Kibaran.
Isotope dating for granitoid rocks have not yet been undertaken. However these
granitoid rocks are demonstrably younger than t h e Luana sedimentary and basic
rocks (Monforte 1960, Rodrigues and Pereira 1973). Nevertheless, K-Ar isotopic
dating carried out on a syenodiorite from Zaire, which is intrusive into the Lulua
Group. and occurring as an extension to the NE of the Lunda (Angola) alkaline
granitoids, yielded an age of 1155 15 Ma (Cahen et af. 1984). On the other
hand, in N E Angola the intrusion of granitoid rocks is related to epeirogenic
movements with NW-SE trend (Rodrigues and Pereira 1973) which coincides with

the directions of tectonic features of the SW red granitoids. So, the granitoitl rocks
of Lunda may also be Kibaran in age. Finally we admit that the Luana and Lower
Malombe Groups may also have a Kibaran age, though only isotopic dating can
clarify this point.

and chronology of the Kibaran Southern rocks are comparable to those of the
Sinclair Group and the Rehoboth Magmatic Arc from Namibia and Botswana
(Carvalho 1983).
