WE ARE THE DONS OF NOTRE DAME!
Taken from the Spanish word for gentleman, a Don of Notre Dame is a Gentleman of Mary. He is committed
to faith, scholarship, and service. He is committed to personal excellence, integrity, and justice.

ON SEPTEMBER 1, 1954, Notre Dame College Prep was

born. Samuel Cardinal Stritch, the Catholic Archbishop of
Chicago, and priests from the Congregation of Holy Cross from
South Bend, Indiana, broke ground in Niles, Illinois on land
donated by the Archdiocese for construction of a boys high school.

Since its founding in 1954, Notre Dame College

Prep, an all-male Roman Catholic secondary level
college preparatory school, has educated more
than 12,000 young men. Located in Niles, Illinois,
on 28 wooded acres, Notre Dame currently enrolls
more than 800 students. Our students come from Chicago and 42 different
suburban communities. Notre Dames approach to education is holistic. Notre
Dame Dons, Gentlemen of Mary, are educated through three pillars: Faith,
Scholarship, and Service.
Notre Dame partners with parents and families in challenging our students
with our college prep program. Individual attention is provided to each young
man throughout his years at Notre Dame. Our goal is to prepare him not only
for college, but also for life. Our students grow in wisdom as well as knowledge.
They grow in faith, values, and morality. Notre Dames partnership with our
families begins with their sons acceptance into high school, and it lasts for
their lifetimes.

FAITH, SCHOLARSHIP, SERVICE.

As part of our commitment to forming men of faith and service, students attend
monthly mass, study the Catholic faith in the classroom, experience the sacraments
of Eucharist and Reconciliation, make an annual retreat, and serve the local
community. Our four-year retreat program is designed to help our students
develop a mature faith that can augment a solid academic foundation with a real
desire to deepen ones relationship with God.
During Kairos, the culminating four-day faith experience for our senior Dons,
young men discover how God is present and working in their lives, especially
among family, friends, and others with whom they interact on a daily basis.
They learn the importance of sharing their gifts with others and becoming
leaders in their faith.

MISSION
Under the patronage of Mary, Notre Dame College Prep is a secondary school committed to educating young men
to be gentlemen of faith, scholarship, and service in an inclusive, family-oriented community. Faithful to the Roman
Catholic tradition and inspired by Gospel values, we prepare students to be lifelong learners and to lead lives of integrity.
OWNERSHIP
Ownership of Notre Dame College Prep now rests in an independent Board comprised of Notre Dame alumni,
parents, educators, and Catholic leaders from the larger community of the Archdiocese of Chicago.
LIFE PREP
Notre Dame partners with each student and his family to provide a challenging college preparatory academic
program. Our goal is to prepare each Notre Dame man for academic success in college. We are equally committed
to preparing each student in his spiritual life, in his moral life, and in his social life.
PERSONAL GROWTH PLAN
Each student is assigned a counselor who will work with him throughout his Notre Dame experience. Counselors
support students by assisting them in managing a variety of development issues that arise during adolescence.
Students enhance their self-understanding and learn effective problem-solving skills. We provide the following
services: Academic Planning/Support, Personal/Social Support, Career Advising, and College Counseling.
COLLEGE PLANNING
The College and Career Center works with Notre Dame seniors on their
transition to college. Counselors conduct senior and junior Insight Nights,
NCAA Eligibility Center Presentations, and Financial Aid Nights for
students and parents. Counselors also coordinate Notre Dame campus visits
for a wide variety of college representatives and athletic coaches, process college
and scholarship applications, and write college recommendation letters.

TRADITION MEETS TECHNOLOGY

In the tradition of the Congregation of Holy Cross, who sponsored the school for 60 years, a Notre Dame
College Prep education promotes the development of the whole person. As the Congregations founder,
Blessed Basil Moreau, C.S.C. stated, The mind will not be cultivated at the expense of the heart.
We believe such an experience is critical, as society has a great need for people who
lead lives of intellectual curiosity, strong moral character, and social responsibility.
We further believe the quality of an education depends in large part on the quality of the
people engaged in this purpose. Consequently, Notre Dame educators are people of
faith who motivate, inspire, and lead our students toward academic excellence while
fostering critical thinking, creativity, and leadership.
During the 2013-2014 school year, Notre Dame College Prep implemented the use of
the Apple iPad. All teachers have undergone extensive training and
professional development to include the iPad in their classrooms.
The iPads provide opportunities for our students to be more productive digital citizens as
they enter a global environment that assumes technology skills and requires creativity and collaboration.
The iPad is easy to use and provides a wide-range of apps to allow students robust visual, audio, and
sensory learning opportunities that will allow for the expansion of innovative ideas. Notre Dame also
provides a student run help desk and numerous iPad seminars.

10 Benefits of the iPad Technology Program at Notre Dame College Prep

4 PROGRAMS, 1 MISSION.
Our instructional programs have distinct levels of challenge: Hesburgh Scholars Program,
College Prep Scholars Program, St. Andre Scholars Program, and Burke Scholars Program.
Each level is geared to prepare our students for college admission. Rigorous courses of study are designed to meet the educational
needs of our diverse student body and are tailored to provide challenging educational experiences for our students.

THE NOTRE DAME COLLEGE PREP

SCHOLARS PROGRAM

THE HESBURGH SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Named in honor of legendary University of Notre Dame
President Rev. Theodore Hesburgh, C.S.C., this four-year
program is designed to challenge the most gifted and
motivated student with a demanding course of studies.
It not only requires the development of the students abilities
in all areas of the academic curriculum, but also seeks to
further his overall development through involvement in
various service-oriented and extracurricular activities.
Successful completion of the Hesburgh Scholars Program
results in a special diploma of distinction. The average
Hesburgh Scholars ACT score is 30.5.

Students in the Notre Dame College Prep Scholars

Program are challenged with a curriculum
designed to meet criteria for any state college or
university. These students might also take some honor
courses and are pushed to meet high academic
expectations. Graduates from the Notre Dame College
Prep Scholars Program have gone on to numerous
selective colleges and universities. The average Notre
Dame College Prep ACT score is 24.

T H E S T. A N D R E S C H O L A R S P R O G R A M

THE BURKE SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Named in honor of Saint Andre Bessette, C.S.C., this college

preparatory program is for students requiring assistance in
achieving academic success at Notre Dame. St. Andre Scholars
must exhibit consistent effort and a willing commitment
of time and energy to academic excellence. This transitional
program helps at-risk students adjust to the first two years
of high school and deal more effectively with the work and
expectations of their final two years at Notre Dame, while
preparing for the rigors of college. The program provides
one-on-one tutoring and small group instruction.

Notre Dame offers a curriculum for students with

mild to severe cognitive disabilities including those
with Down Syndrome, Fragile X Syndrome or other
learning differences. Notre Dame is the first Catholic
school in the state and one of twelve schools in the
country to offer such a program. The Burke Scholars
Program is named in honor of Illinois Supreme Court
Justice Anne Burke and her husband, Chicago
Alderman Edward Burke.

Notre Dame students volunteered

more than 20,000 hours of service
in 2014-2015.
As Gentlemen of Mary, Notre Dame students are called to be men of
faith, scholarship, and service. Each student is required to participate in
the Notre Dame Christian Service Program during his four years of
high school. All students must complete a minimum of 25 hours of
volunteer service per year during their first three years and 15 hours
during their senior year. In true Notre Dame fashion, many students
go well beyond this requirement.
Students can provide service at Notre Dame in a variety of ways.
Students can serve as Ambassadors and volunteer at athletic and community events
or at specific events organized by the Christian Service Office. They may also
provide service to their parish, elementary school, or local community by coaching,
tutoring, or participating in neighborhood clean-ups, etc.
Each Notre Dame student will volunteer a minimum of 90 service hours during
his four years in high school. In 2014-2015, Notre Dame students took part in
a Summer Immersion trip to Harlan, Kentucky where they built new
homes for local residents.

on interest and are geared to better serve our students who do not have a direct route.
