Who is at Risk?
Your grandmother, your mother, your aunt,
your sister, your daughter, your cousin, your
friend, your coworker and YOURSELF.
Help to educate women about the importance
of early breast cancer detection, diagnosis and
treatment. Annual mammography screenings can
detect breast cancer early and are the best chance
women have for beating this deadly disease.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women
and falls only second to lung cancer as a leading
cause of cancer death. Encourage every woman
you know to schedule a mammography screening
for herself today. It could save her life.

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS

Keep tomorrow healthy.

any of us know
that
certain
genetic
factors
can
predict breast cancer.
The BRCA1 and BRCA2
gene mutations are the
most common inherited
causes of the disease.
Woman
who
have
inherited this face a
much higher risk of
developing breast cancer
and ovarian cancer.
The testing for this is
offered only to those
who are likely to have
inherited the mutation
based off of personal
or
family
history.
After having a lengthy
family history of breast
cancer, I opted to have
the testing done in
October 2010. I was
asked several times,
why would you want
to know if you are going
to get breast cancer?
The truth is, I wanted
to face it head on and

potentially stop it before

it had time to run into
anything. I didnt want to
be another statistic. A few
weeks later the results
finally came in and, not to
my surprise, I had tested
postive for the BRCA2
gene
mutation
which
gave me an 87% chance of
developing breast cancer.
After many visits with
my family doctor
and
oncologist, I was referred
to a plastic surgeon
where I decided to have
a bilateral mastectomy
with total reconstruction.
In April of 2011, after I
had kissed my husband
and daughter goodbye
,they wheeled me down
the white corridor and
into an operating room.
Although the recovery was
very painful, my chances
of living a longer life had
increased significantly. I
have had many people ask
why take such drastic

measures? The answer

is quite simple, I wanted
to be around to see my
kids grow up. If the tools
are there, why not use
them? New changes and
dicoveries are being made
everyday in technology
and if you can lessen your
chances
of
developing
breast cancer why not do it?
Its been 4 years since
I had surgery and I dont
regret it one bit. I have
a full life ahead of me
because I now have a less
than 1% chance of getting
breast cancer. Recently, I
have found a saying that I
find holds a lot of truth in
it, Breast cancer is just a
few words, not a sentence.
The tools and technology
are there at your disposal.
Take the time to learn
about
breast
cancer
prevention.
The more
information you know and
understand could save
your life or someone elses.
