CURRENCY
The Czech currency is called
koruna (crown, abbreviated
K), which is made up of 100
hal (hellers, abbreviated hal.).
Coins in the following denominations are in circulation: 1 crown,
2 crowns, 5 crowns, 10 crowns

crowns, 200 crowns, 500 crowns,
1,000 crowns, 2,000 crowns and
5,000 crowns.
MONEY MATTERS
The cost of living is low in the
Czech Republic compared to
other European countries, and
you will be able to live comfortably without spending large
sums. Cash dispensers are generally the easiest and cheapest
way to manage money here, and
there is a number of them located conveniently throughout
the Zln town center. You can also pay by credit card in
most stores.
Foreign currency can be exchanged at any bank or money
exchange office, though you might check around to see
which one gives the best exchange rate, since these can
vary a little.
19
EMERGENCY SERVICES
Throughout the Czech Republic, there is one set of emergency telephone numbers for use in case of fire, the urgent
need of an ambulance, or the police. These are as follows:
112 Emergency calls
central number
150 Fire brigade
155 Ambulance
156 Municipal police
158 Police
EMERGENCY
If you are faced with an urgent need for medical attention
at a time when doctors' offices are not open, and you are
confined to bed, call the first-aid service at 577 214 445
or 577 214 446; a doctor will come to examine you within
a very short time. In other cases, you should go in person
to the emergency service at the hospital Baova nemocnice, Havlkovo nbe 600. Emergency dental care is
also available at the same address.
Take the trolleybus number 2, 8 or 9 and get off at the
stop Nemocnice /Hospital/.
PHARMACIES
Most of the medicines available elsewhere can
be obtained here, though not in every pharmacy.
Nevertheless, you are strongly recommended to
bring medication you will use during your stay in Zln. Unfortunately, there is no non-stop pharmacy in Zln. The most

20
POLICE
There are two separate police forces in the Czech Republic,
the National Police Forces (Policie esk republiky) and the
Municipal Police Forces (Mstsk policie). The Czech Police
deal with such areas as criminal activities, road traffic
(accidents, fines and so on), and visas for foreigners. The
Municipal Police have certain limited powers to maintain
law and order within the town or city.
Violent crime is still rare by the standards of Western
Europe or the United States, but there is a great deal of
theft. Be alert to the danger of pickpockets in crowded
places. However, Zln is a very safe town.
POSTAL AND TELEPHONE SERVICE
Most post offices are only open on weekdays. Buy
stamps at the post office or from newsstands. Posted
letters go into the orange boxes around the city.
Most public telephones in the Czech Republic no longer
accept coins but must be operated with a prepaid phone
card, which can be bought at post offices and at most
newsstands. Phone cards are suitable for local, long distance, and international calls. The best way to call
abroad is to use the xCall program. Dial 952 + 00 +
country code + area code + phone number. Your phone call
will be cheaper if you call off-peak, i.e. from 5 p.m. to 7 a.m.
on weekdays, and any time on weekends or holidays. You
can also use a pre-paid phone card called xCard, which
can be used for calling from any phone within the Czech
Republic. Remember that all prepaid phone cards expire
12 months after the first use. To call out of the Czech
Republic dial 00 followed by the country code, area
code and the number. For the international operator, dial
1181. The country code for the Czech Republic is 420.

The Czech Republic, as a part of Central Europe, is
squeezed between Germany, Austria, Slovakia and
Poland. The country is bordered by the mountains. Its area
is almost 79,000 sq. km (30,000 sq. miles), the same size

inclined to arguments or fights. They are intelligent, creative, well educated, and can be quite conservative. Young
people tend to be more proficient in foreign languages.
The largest Church is the Roman Catholic but Czechs are
mostly atheists, due to the systematic oppression of religion during Communism.
CLIMATE
Czech is a four-seasoned country with a continental climate. The summers tend to be sunny and quite hot,
the winters cold, the springs and falls are mild but
changeable. Weather forecast is available at CNN.
