SDBNS 1.11

Support for Windows 8

Test drive
It is prohibited to test drive the vehicle with the diagnostics program connected.
The vehicle must always be stationary when the diagnostics program for BNS is in use.
Bear in mind that when activating for example the door solenoid valves the normal safety system (e.g.
sensing strips) is not in operation.
See also "Normal functions of the BNS system" below.

Operating system
The system specification indicates which operating systems SD2 is approved for use with.

Switch user
The Switch user function in Windows is not supported by SDBNS. If two users logged on at the same
time try to use SDBNS, a communications fault will result.
Visual themes
Windows may sometimes display scroll bars in the program for no apparent reason. If you
regard this as a problem, you can disable the "visual themes" function. The program will then
use the classic Windows display. This setting can be applied as follows: Right-click on the
SDBNS icon and then select Properties. Then select the Compatibility tab and select Disable
visual themes. This setting only affects the appearance of SDBNS; other programs retain their
appearance.
If you would like all programs to have the classic Windows display, proceed as follows: Select
Start, Settings, Control panel and Display. Then select the Appearance tab and select Windows
Classic style under the heading Windows and buttons:

Computers without COM port

On some new computers there is no COM port. Instead, they only have USB connections. This
makes it difficult to use SDBNS since the VCI must be connected via a COM port.
In such cases, we recommend use of computer manufacturer accessories, such as a docking station
with COM port (RS-232).

General
BNS generation
A new BNS generation corresponds to a new technical specification with increased functionality. The
BNS generation is given a designation that consists of two integers separated by a decimal point, i.e.
BNS 3.1.
Node version
The nodes contain electronics, i.e. hardware with logic designated with a specific node version.
These are programmed with software that is called the software application and which is basic
software for the node in question.
Basic diagnostics
If the diagnostics program finds a BNS system for which it has no support, a basic diagnostics
program starts. In the basic diagnostics program, the various input and output signals can be
checked on a node-by-node basis. Pin lists that can be used to check whether the signals are correct
are available at http://prodsupport.scania.com for BNS systems 8/9 and 12/13.

Identification at start-up
Some more basic types of programming can be made directly at start-up if any of the nodes have
been incorrectly identified.

Known flaws and problems in the issue

Open door signal
SDBNS version 4.1 to 11 has no description indicating that the Master signal must be active in order
for the "open door signal" to be active. In other words, that the "open door signal" is deactivated in
the event of an emergency stop.
Bus stop brake warning lamp
SDBNS version 4.1 to 11 has no description indicating that the bus stop brake warning lamp never
comes on if the parking brake is applied.
Component description of D521 on right-hand drive buses
The component is located in the left-hand ceiling channel in right-hand drive buses. SDBNS generation
10 incorrectly indicates that it is located in the right-hand ceiling channel.
Activating instrument lighting
For some SDBNS generations, there are no descriptions of which variants exist for how instrument
lighting is activated in different buses.
SDBNS generation 3.1 has no description indicating that the following variants exist:
Instrument lighting is activated together with 15 voltage.
Instrument lighting is activated together with the position lamps.
Instrument lighting is activated with the rotary light switch.
SDBNS generations 4.1, 5.1, 6, 7, 4.2, 5.2, 6.1, 8, 9, 10 and 11 have no description indicating that the
following variants exist:
Instrument lighting is activated together with 15 voltage.
Instrument lighting is activated with the rotary light switch.
Ventilation damper position is incorrectly presented if the vehicle is equipped with AC
Ventilation dampers V533, V535, V545 and V547 open/close differently depending on whether the
vehicle is equipped with AC.
In SDBNS, these components are always presented as if the vehicle is not equipped with AC.
For vehicles with AC, the dampers are open when the signal is active.
This applies to BNS version 6.0, 7.0, 10.0 and 11.0.

Normal functions of the BNS system

The diagnostics program communicates with the BNS system via a set of diagnostic commands. These
diagnostic commands are sent out on the BNS system network, which then becomes busy and cannot
perform its normal functions. The normal functions of the BNS system cease. Sometimes when there is
a break in diagnostic communication, the normal functions of the BNS system can be updated. As a
result, the BNS system may seem to function intermittently when the diagnostics program is connected.
The diagnostics program can therefore only be used to check system components and one has to
assume that BNS is functioning normally during that time. From BNS version 3.1 onwards, this has
been improved through an increase in communication speed.
Bear in mind that when activating for example the door solenoid valves the normal safety system (e.g.
sensing strips) is not in operation.

Too many components in the windows

The diagnostics program function is to detect which components are fitted on the vehicle. In some
cases, the program has difficulty determining such and then indicates more components than are

Scania CV AB 2013

SDBNS
2013-12-09
actually fitted. An example of this would be that the vehicle is programmed for front foglights, but no
components (lamps and switches) are fitted. The diagnostics program will indicate lamps and
switches as it can detect how the vehicle is programmed and not which equipment it has.

Activate functions (applies only to BNS version 2.0 and 3.0):

When an activation window starts, the buttons need to be in the position indicated by the control unit.
The activate symbol, "A", should also correspond with the electronic position on the pin of the
node/control unit.
Sometimes these can be "out of step", for example the button can be released but "A" is lit. In these
situations the "A" symbol and the driver stage is activated but the diagnostics program received
incorrect information from the control unit when it read the position of the button.

Updating speed
The updating of each window is dependent on the number of nodes the diagnostics program must
communicate with regarding the status of the input signals. The direction indicator output signals
therefore take longer to update than for example the warning lamp for open hatch.
Please wait while the program reads the signals. Do not click continue until the window is updated.
For BNS version 3.1 and onwards, the updating speed has been improved through an increase in
communication speed.

Component positioning diagram for node I

In the component positioning diagram for node I, component T553 was incorrectly named T533.
This applies to the SDBNS versions for 3.0, 3.1, 5.1 and 5.2.

Incorrect component texts

Some component texts are incorrect in SDBNS, but have been corrected starting from SDBNS
6.0/7.0. The corrected component texts are listed below.
Component S545
Main switch for exit doors
S545 has fixed positions. The switch is located in the roof panel above the driver.

Component S559
Switch for disengaging automatic exit door operation
When the driver activates the switch, passengers cannot open the exit doors using the photocells or
passenger door opening buttons.

Component S600
Main switch for exit doors
S600, spring-loaded. The switch is located in the roof panel above the driver.

Component S601
Disengagement of entry door leaf 2
This switch is used to disengage operation of leaf 2 on the entry door. If the door is disengaged
when it is open, it closes.

Component S625
Switch for the exit door behind the rear axle
The switch has different functions, depending on whether the vehicle has automated door control or
not.
With door control:
Switching between automatic or manual door opening.
Without door control:
Opening and closing the door.
The switch can also serve as a disengagement button for the exit door behind the rear axle,
depending on the vehicle specification.

Component S640
Switch for joint opening of entry door and all exit doors
This spring-loaded switch, located on the instrument panel, opens the entry door and all exit doors
when it is activated. When the switch is activated, the indicator lamp in the switch comes on. The
indicator lamp goes out when a door is closed.
The switch only opens all doors. The door closing switches are used to close the doors.

Component S641
Switch to reset emergency opening of doors
The driver can reset emergency opening of doors with the switch.

Component V530
Solenoid valve for door opening
The solenoid valve opens and closes door leaf 1 in front of the front axle. If the entry door is a single
door, the solenoid valve activates door leaf 1.
Note: If the vehicle is equipped with a safety strip (sensing strip) on the entry door, the connections
to valves V530 and V531 switch places with each other.

Component V531
Solenoid valve for door opening
The solenoid valve opens and closes door leaf 2 in front of the front axle.
Note: If the vehicle is equipped with a safety strip (sensing strip) on the entry door, the connections
to valves V530 and V531 switch places with each other.

BNS 2.0
In March 1999, the software application for BNS 2.0 was changed to version 2.05. The SDBNS
software has not been updated as regards these changes.
The changes are indicated in the text below.
Climate
Zeroing of the climate control unit has been improved. Half speed was introduced for the driver area
fan in node F, pin 36. In the function group "Driving lamps" (External lighting), the right-hand auxiliary
lamp has been disconnected.
The button for controlling the door fan was introduced on node F, pin 19. Position "low" means that
the fan is switched off. Otherwise the circuit is in automatic mode.
When Diagnos was set for a node in the system, the logic for node X could interpret this as a
communication fault. The communication fault in node X caused the climate unit to be reset and the
door logic switched to inactive mode. The resetting of "Climate" was changed.

Doors
Switch S547 with two positions has been changed to switch S548 with three positions for closing of
the exit doors.
Two new connectors have been added to separate the photocells for the left-hand door on the door
behind the front axle and the door behind the articulation unit.
A new functionality, pressure reduction, has been added. Two new solenoid valves, V559 and V560,
have been added for pressure reduction in the door circuits.
Previously when the exit doors had been opened, the bus stop brake was applied for two seconds if
the driver used the forced closure button. This has been corrected with a timer on the photocell
which is reset when the doors are closed using forced closure.
It was previously possible to close the doors with the forced closure function when door opening was
in manual mode. The functionality for control of the door behind the front axle and control of the door
behind the rear axle has been changed because of this.
Previously the exit door behind the rear axle could open under "abnormal" conditions. This is due to
an incorrect application for preventing opening of the engine compartment door. Changes have
therefore been made in the functionality for control of the door behind the rear axle, where two
photocells have been added. One photocell is connected to node D20-TL, which is connected in
parallel with B20-TL. The other photocell is connected to node D19-TL, which is connected in parallel
with B7-TL.
The input for external activation of the exit door sensing strips was introduced in node E, pin 5.
French law requires that the sensing strips are active at all times. In the earlier BNS version, the
sensing strips for the entry door were not active when the battery node was in inactive mode. The
sensing strips for the exit doors would then not function if the doors were closed with the main switch
switched off. A "holding function" was therefore introduced for the BNS relays, ensuring that the
relays are activated and the sensing strips for the exit doors are active until the doors are fully
closed.
External lighting
Driving lamps. The right-hand auxiliary lamp has been disconnected. Component L520-1, connected
to node F, pin 36, is disconnected.
Internal lighting
The lamp for the coin tray has been changed from 12 volt (PWM) to 24 volt.
Other functions
An output for the speed signal "speed 1" was introduced in node C, pin 14.
Counting of passengers has been improved. The photocell can be separated from the exit doors if
counting of passengers is used. For separation, the rear photocell on the first exit door should be
connected to node D, pin 19. The rear photocell on the other exit door should be connected to node
D, pin 20. The function for counting of passengers has also been modified due to customer's
requirements. The time for passenger exit has been reduced from 1 second to 0.4 seconds. The
counter is reset when the main fuse is in the off position.
New functionality for counting passengers has been added under Other functions. The functionality
of the reading lamps has also been updated. The component "RLLS" (reading lamp, left side) is no
longer connected to D14-1.

Tips
Read/Activate function window
It is now possible to scroll the Read/Activate window if it has a scroll bar by using the keyboard. First,
position yourself in the window by using the F6 key (the active window is marked in blue). To scroll in
the window, hold down the CTRL key whilst depressing one of the navigation keys (arrow up/down,
Page Up/Down, Home, End).

Hide the Taskbar

If your computer runs with a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels, the Taskbar in Windows (see figure below)
may get in the way. If this is the case, not all of the SDBNS windows will be visible on the screen. This
is easy to correct.

Click a blank part of the Taskbar using mouse button 2 (usually the right button). Select Properties and
Taskbar Options. De-select Always on top and Auto hide. Click OK. The SDBNS windows will then be
visible in their entirety.
Further instructions can be found under SDBNS direct help.
