Effective Total Quality Management In Textile Dyeing

Industries
Introduction
Textile industry is considered as the backbone of the Bangladeshs economy. However, after the
World Trade Organization (WTO) regime this sector is facing fierce competition in the
international market. Some of these companies are not performing up to the mark in comparison
to their competitors in the dimensions of competitiveness like timely delivery, consistency,
reliability, innovation and quality. According to ISO Quality: "The totality of features and
characteristics of a product or service that bear on its ability to satisfy stated or implied needs".
Productivity increases with improvement of quality. Low quality means high cost and loss of
competitive position. Crosby (1980, p.1) states, if we concentrate on making quality certain,
we can probably increase our profit by an amount equal to 5% to 10% of your sales. We can
achieve our best quality product by introducing TQM (Total Quality Management) in textile
industries.

Total Quality Management(TQM)

Juran (1998 p. 372) defined the concept of Total Quality Management( TQM) as a set of
management processes and systems that create delighted customers through empowered
employees, leading to higher revenue and lower cost. Ross and Perry (1999 p.1) describe total
quality management (TQM) as the integration of all functions and processes within an
organization in order to achieve continuous improvement of the quality of goods and services.
The goal is customer satisfaction.
To be successful implementing TQM, an organization must concentrate on the eight key
elements:
1. Ethics.

2. Integrity.

3. Trust.

4. Training.

5. Teamwork.

6. Leadership.

7. Recognition.

8. Communication.

Effect Of TQM On Textile Dyeing

Consequently manufacturing of textiles mainly consist of spinning, weaving, processing(Dyeing
& Finishing) and garment development with different methodologies and unique output for
various applications. Dyeing is a process of imparting various colors in fiber, yarn and fabric.
Quality of dyeing is integrated with fiber characteristics, fabric weave, chemical composition of
dyes and auxiliaries, physical interaction of light, color fastness to light, crocking and washing.
However, quality of dyeing process is associated with quality of fiber, spun yarn and woven
fabric, because these materials are input for dyeing process. Therefore better input will minimize
wastage of time, money and workmanship. Quality of dyed fabric required proper handling of
mechanical devices along with controlled chemical reactions because both have crucial
importance in order to achieve defect free dyeing products.Textile dyeing process is not simple
as it is associated to fiber characteristics, properties of water, pre-treatments, mercerization,
productivity /maintenance of machines, chemical auxiliaries, accuracy of testing lab reports and
nature dyes. Moreover, some basic processes also define quality of final dyed product.

The use of statistical process control and value-added analysis is also employed in this industry
of the textile value-added chain. Work-flow and cycle- time analysis is employed in companies
more advanced in their TQM system. Cross- functional teams in areas of customer service and
quality improvement are also used. The required quality of a dyed fabric can be meet/achieved
successfully through the implementation of effective TQM in textile dyeing industries which
ensure best quality of final products along with lower cost and higher productivity.

Conclusion
Globalization is an inevitable phenomenon. It is no longer an option, but a fact whether one likes
it or not. Countries like Bangladesh have to manage their economies skillfully, to face the global
crosscurrents.Without making fundamental changes in their management approach and
emphasizing on quality management textile companies cannot get their decent share from the
international market. So the effective implementation of ISO 9000 certification should consider
as the midway towards the implementation of advanced systems and models of TQM.
