4-H DISTRICT VI HORSE JUDGING WORKOUT

YORK COUNTY 4-H CENTER

*Youth teams from 4-H, FFA and/or Breed Association teams are encouraged to enter*

The schedule will be as follows:


8:30 – 9:00 a.m. – Registration
9:00 – 10:00 a.m. – Conformation Clinic and Oral Reasons Clinic
10:00 – 12:00 p.m. – Judging Contest
12:00 – 12:30 p.m. – Lunch
12:30 – 1:30 p.m. – Reasons and Questions
1:30 – 2:00 p.m. – Discussion of Classes and Official Reasons
2:00 – 2:30 p.m. – Draft Horse Judging Clinic
Approx. 2:30 p.m. – Awards Ceremony

 This contest will be held RAIN or SHINE as a covered facility is available.

 Bring a bagged lunch as lunch will not be provided.


 Entry fees are $35.00 per youth team or $10.00 per individual. Late entries will be accepted at $55.00
per youth team or $15.00 per individual. Entry fees are non-refundable. Make all checks payable to
Capital Region 4-H.
 Teams and/or individuals are asked to pre-register and pay entry fees by Monday, May 3, 2010.
Enter as many teams and/or individuals as are desired.
 Teams may be entered by completing the attached Official Entry Form and mailing it to: Penn State
Cooperative Extension, C/O Lisa Jones, 112 Pleasant Acres Rd, York, PA 17402.

Horse Judging Contest Rules:


DIVISIONS:
Youth teams from 4-H, FFA and/or Breed Association teams are encouraged to enter. Teams must consist of
three or four members with the three highest scores making the composite score for the team.

Sr. Youth: Contestants must have reached their 14th birthday and not have passed their 19th
birthday on January 1 of the current year. These contestants will judge 2 halter classes and a
performance class. Senior Youth contestants will give 1 set of oral reasons which will be on either the
halter or performance class.

Sr. Beginner: Contestants must have reached their 14th birthday and not have passed their 19th
birthday on January 1 of the current year. Senior Beginners will judge 1 halter class, 1 performance
class and complete equipment identification. Contestants will not be required to give oral reasons;
however will be required to answer 5 questions orally on either the halter and/or the performance class.
Jr. Youth: Contestants must have reached their 8th birthday and not have passed their 14th birthday
on January 1 of the current year. These contestants will judge 2 halter classes and a performance class.
Junior Youth contestants will give 1 set of oral reasons which may be on either the halter or
performance class.
Jr. Beginner: Contestants must have reached their 8th birthday and not have passed their 14th
birthday on January 1 of the current year. Junior Beginners will judge 1 halter class, 1 performance
class and complete equipment identification. Contestants will not be required to give oral reasons;
however will be required to answer 5 questions orally on either the halter and/or the performance class.
* Individuals are welcomed and encouraged to compete in any division if there are not enough contestants to
make up a full team.
CONTEST:
1. One halter class will be judged. The halter class will be judged as sound of limb, eye, wind and mouth.

2. One performance class will be judged. The performance class will be chosen from Western Pleasure,
Hunter Under Saddle, Hunter Hack, Western Riding, Reining, Pleasure Driving, Horsemanship, Hunt
Seat Equitation and Trail. Performance horses will be judged as seen (unsoundness to be penalized
accordingly). All tack and attire is considered legal.

3. An equipment identification section will be included in the contest. Equipment may include, but is not
limited to, tack, bits, grooming tools, farrier tools, veterinary equipment and other various horse
equipment.

4. There will be no talking during the contest; however, all participants will be permitted to use judging
materials.

5. In the event of a tie the following will apply:


a. If tied for a division award in halter or performance, the contestant or team having the highest
reasons score in that division will be listed first. If tied for a division award in reasons, the
contestant or team having the highest overall placing will be listed first.
b. If tied for individual or team overall award, the contestant or team having the highest overall
reasons score shall be listed first.
