Maria Clara Prez

Didactics
Writing lesson, Pre-intermediate, 8 years old.
Objective: by the end of the lesson, students should be able to write a
short composition describing their last vacation.
1. Building the field
The aim of this stage is to make students think of the different
activities we can do on holidays.
1 - (5 min) Stick on the board pictures of places to go on vacations: countryside,
beach, famous city, holiday resort Elicit from students words they can think of
that relate to the picture and write them below the pictures:
Example:
- countryside: ride a horse, go for walks in the woods, fishing, barbecues, milk,
dulce de leche,
- beach: sunbathe, play football or volleyball on the beach, eat ice- cream, play
cards
2 (10 min) As a second stage of this activity, students will get in pairs. Each
group will get an advertisement text (brochure, article, amusement park map,
etc ) and a chart to fill in. They will have to read and extract the information
needed:
Example:
Name of the place (Where):
Best season to visit (When):
Activities to do (What):
Etc
2. Modeling the text type
1 - (15 min)
- Display on a projector a text which describes someones experience on the last
vacation. The class as a whole discusses the text:
- Write on the board, next to the text key words that describe where the person
went, what the person did and the same with when, who, how, why (if applies).
Underline the part of the text that could be useful at the moment of writing their
own description;
Example:
Where: On my last vacation
What: On the first day, my family and I
Also, teacher must make students aware of the following vocabulary:
Basic text organizers (first, then, after, on the last day)
Adjectives
Past simple
3. Joint construction of the text
1 - (10 min) Jigsaw letter:
Groups of 4, students will receive a letter of a person telling a friend about the
last vacation. It will be cut into pieces and scrambled. Students will have to put it

in order having in mind the aspects previously discussed. The information will still
be displayed on the board.
The whole class corrects. The pieces will be shown on the projector, one at the
time.
2 (10 min) Individual work:
Students will receive the same chart they filled in on Stage 1 (Building Field) so
they can take notes to use when writing their pieces. Students have to think of
the different aspects that will be included on their descriptions. Teacher monitors
and makes suggestions when needed.
4. Independent writing of the text
(20 min)
Teacher asks students to write their own descriptions with the following criteria:
1 Title: My last vacations
2 Include: where you went, who you went with, what activities you did, describe
the hotel, favorite place.
3 Answer these questions:
What was your favorite activity?
What food did you like the most?
Did anything go wrong?
3 Students exchange descriptions. Each one reads, makes suggestions or
corrections in a separate piece of paper. Teacher collects the tasks and corrects.
