WEEK 2 TO-DO LIST: Pair and Group Work for Collaborative Learning

This list is designed to help you plan your week. There will be a to-do list each week. On this list
you will see the required and optional activities for this week of the course. For your
convenience, there is also a simplified checklist (PDF):
https://d396qusza40orc.cloudfront.net/shaping1landscape/week2/checklist_end_of_week2.pdf
We estimate that you will spend about 5-6 hours on the activities for this week. This includes
about an hour each for
viewing videos, taking notes, and responding to the in-video questions
reading the required article and taking notes as needed
reading and posting on the discussion forums
project work: preparing a lesson plan (probably more than an hour)
The remaining time would be spent on participating in the contest thread, doing the Pre-viewing
Knowledge Check and Weekly Quiz, and undertaking personal explorations of the optional
readings and video.
See the Suggested Week 2 Schedule below to help manage your time.
Information about Coursera, including help: https://courserahelp.zendesk.com/hc/en-us
You can also find forums where you can share problems and get suggestions from your peers,
as well as contact the instructors about issues with the materials, by looking at the >All
Discussion Forums link on the left sidebar of any course page.
Optional:
If you havent done so already, please add information to your Coursera profile by clicking on
your name in the top right corner of the screen and selecting >Profile. If you are willing to share
information with others, pull down the >Privacy menu and select >The Coursera community.
You can add whatever information you are willing to share. Please understand that everyone
in our MOOC and in other Coursera courses will be able to see the information.
Also, please introduce yourself in the Introductions Forum (linked in the left sidebar or within
the >All Discussion Forums list, also on the left sidebar) if you have not done so already. The
Introductions Forum posts are visible only to members of our course. Your introduction will help
others in our course connect with you.
If you are receiving too much email, change your >Course Preferences in the pull-down
menu under your name.

Download and/or print any materials that you feel will be useful to you.
1. Video Introduction
Start by watching the introductory video for Week 2:

2. Pre-viewing Knowledge Check

Take the Pre-viewing Knowledge Check for Week 2:
https://class.coursera.org/shaping1landscape-004/quiz/start?quiz_id=39
It will help you get a sense of what you already know, including essential vocabulary related to
this weeks topic.
3. Pair and Group Work (Module 4) Video
https://class.coursera.org/shaping1landscape-004/lecture/11?preview=1
Read the Video Viewing Guide for Week 2, which will help you think about the classrooms you
see: https://class.coursera.org/shaping1landscape-004/wiki/week2_video_viewing_guide
It's a good idea to download the PDF version:
https://d396qusza40orc.cloudfront.net/shaping1landscape/week2/week2_video_viewing_guide.
pdf
Then watch the video for this week. Please watch it on Coursera
(https://class.coursera.org/shaping1landscape-004/lecture/11?preview=1) so that you can do
the in-video questions to check your knowledge.
If you cannot view the video at the link above, then you can watch the video without any
questions at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mgwWhWa0Q8
Youll see additional pre-viewing ideas as well as knowledge checks and reflection questions
during the video. The Video Viewing Guide will help you take notes. Your notes on the video
and on the required reading will prepare you for the required Weekly Quiz at the end of the
week.
4. Required Reading
You can download all of the required readings for this course from the Course 1 Ebook;
https://d396qusza40orc.cloudfront.net/shaping1landscape/c1-ebook.zip
You can view the book or other PDF files in Acrobat Reader, or download them to a tablet
or smartphone and place them in eReader software such as Google Play on Android, or
iBooks on iPad, or the Adobe Reader app for either system.
This week, everyone will read the same article, but you should choose a Required Discussion
Forum based on the level or age of students you teach. You may participate in both Discussion
Forums, but only one is required. Please look at the Discussion Forum questions before you
begin to read.
This week's reading:

one of the Required Discussion Forums, either for Teachers of Young Learners or Teachers of
Teens and Adult Learners. Choose the required forum from the list in the >All Discussion
Forums link in the left sidebar.
Note: You may participate in any forum (see the >All Discussion Forums link in the left sidebar),
but you will be graded only on the Required Forums. You will need a minimum of two
responses (new threads, posts, or comments) in at least one Required forum for each week.
Each post/comment must be substantive, related to the topic of the week, and unique (just
saying "I agree" is not enough).
If you share an idea that you found somewhere else, you MUST include the source of the
idea, such as the URL. Be especially sure to include the source and quotation marks if you are
copying and pasting from somewhere else so that you avoid plagiarism. Plagiarism is a violation
of the Coursera Honor Code.

6. Lesson Plan Project Phase 1 (GRADED)

Your project work will be part of the grade for a Statement of Accomplishment in this course.
Please read carefully the detailed instructions provided for creating your lesson in the Phase 1
Lesson Plan Assignment:
https://class.coursera.org/shaping1landscape004/wiki/phase1_lesson_plan_project_assignment

or download individual files from their separate pages (see the Assignment page for links).
Your Phase 1 Lesson Plan is due on Monday October 12 at 11:59 pm Pacific time. Please
get a head start on it! When you are ready to upload your lesson plan, give yourself extra time
-- It will take some time to upload or copy/paste your submission. Coursera may not be able to
accept all submissions if there is heavy Internet traffic at the last minute. If you do not submit a
lesson plan, you will not be able to participate in the Phase 1 Peer and Self-evaluation
components.
Please note: You will not be able to use a mobile device for the some parts of the Lesson
Plan Project. Be sure to have access to a computer and browser if you intend to complete this
course.

with a piece of realia from another culture. Be as creative as possible in describing what it is in
the Let Me Be Creative! forum (correctness doesn't count in this forum its just about
creativity). OR, if you know what it is, name it and explain it in as interesting and personal a way
as possible in the I Know It! forum. These are objects that are familiar to people in some
contexts and unfamiliar to others. You could adapt this activity to your classes.
Read more about the contest, including how to submit your own photos for a future contest,
