His Teaching

John 14:26 – Read through.

The Counselor (the Holy Spirit) teaches us all things and reminds us of everything Jesus said.

How does He do this?

There are three principle ways that the Holy Spirit teaches.
Ephesians 1:17-19
1. Revelation through wisdom –
Wisdom = the quality or state of being wise; knowledge of what is true or right coupled with just judgment as to
action; sagacity, discernment, or insight.
This can be coupled with God’s will and path for your life and others (Jeremiah 29:11, Isaiah 30:21).

2. Enlightening of the heart –

Enlighten = to give intellectual or spiritual light to; instruct; impart knowledge to; Archaic, to shed light upon.
1 John 1:5-7. The Holy Spirit guides us out of darkness (sin) and into the light (righteousness).
Job 12:22. It is God’s very nature to expose the things that would keep us from knowing Him more.
Why the heart?
Matthew 15:10-11, 15-18. Read through. If the heart is pure the person is clean according to Jesus.

3. Comparison (1 Corinthians 2:13 KJV) –

“Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost
teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.”
Compare = a likening; illustration by similitude; comparative estimate or statement.
We know that while Jesus walked the earth as a man He was filled with the Holy Spirit (Luke 4:18). Well, how
did Jesus teach? In parables of course! Every parable is a comparison or illustration by similitude.
Compare with me for a moment the difference between learning from the intellectual mind and learning from
the Spirit:
Intellect – the learning process is a series of ordered events, or a string of thoughts leading to a conclusion.
(Example: Because that apple got detached from the tree, it fell and hit me on the head. There must be some
force responsible for the apple falling. Therefore, I conclude that gravity exists.)

Spirit – the learning process is a vivid picture giving an eventual revelation and enlightenment to our spirit.
(Example: "Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was let down into the lake and caught all kinds
of fish. When it was full, the fishermen pulled it up on the shore. Then they sat down and collected the good
fish in baskets, but threw the bad away.” Matthew 13:47-48.)

Do you see the difference?

This is why Jesus said, “Flesh gives birth to flesh but the Spirit gives birth to spirit…I have spoken to you of
earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things?” (John 3:6, 12).

Take a quick glance at Revelation and see how the Holy Spirit taught us the future. All three elements of His
teaching pattern are there:
Revelation 1:1 – “The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants what must soon
take place.”
Revelation 1:3 – “Blessed is the one who reads the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it
and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near.”
Revelation 12:1 – “A great and wondrous sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the
moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head. She was pregnant and cried out in pain as she was
about to give birth.” (Comparison of Israel to this woman).

*Now that you know how the Holy Spirit has been trying to teach you, you’ll be more open to learn from Him
when you see Him using these methods in your life.
