FIRE PROTECTION

WHY
do we protect steel
structures from fire?

FIRE PROTECTION

Primary objectives:
Save lives by allowing evacuation of people
Allow safe access for fire fighters
Protect the building from structural failure

FIRE PROTECTION

Structural steel can be fire

protected by a variety of
methods including:
1.Concrete encasement
2. Fire resistant boards,
3. Cementitious,
4. Sprayed inorganic materials
5. Intumescent coatings.

FIRE PROTECTION

These methods are commonly referred to as passive fire

protection.
Their function is to insulate the steel in a fire situation and
increase the time before the steel loses its design margin of
safety. This usually occurs at a steel temperature of around
400C - 600C.
All commonly used building materials may lose some strength
when exposed to fire. Concrete may spall to expose
reinforcement, wood depletes by charring and steel starts to
lose its load bearing capacity.

FIRE PROTECTION

Each country has its own building regulations and

design codes, which broadly state that the load bearing
elements of a building shall be capable of resisting fire
for the advised period without loss of stability in the
event of fire.
The period of fire protection is normally 30 minutes, 60
minutes, 90 minutes or 120 minutes. This duration is
dependent on the building use, type, size and overall
height.

METHODS FOR FIREPRROFING STEEL COLUMNS:

1. Encasement in Reinforced Concrete
2. Enclosure in metal lath and plaster
3. Enclosure in multiple layers of gypsum board
4. Spray-on fireproofing
5. Loose insulation fill inside a sheet metal
6. Water-filled box column made of a wide-flange shape
with added steel plates
