CONCRETE UNITS
A. Masonry units shall be cast-place or or precast concrete panels, concrete
masonry units, or other approved material as shown on the Drawings.
B. Concrete Panel Reinforcement: A minimum of one layer of 4x4 W4xW4
welded fabric meeting the requirements of ASTM-A185 placed at middepth or as specified in ASTM-A185, but not less than required by the
Contractors design. Fabric shall be either epoxy coated in accordance
with MoDOT Section 1036.3 or galvanized in accordance with AASHTO
M111. Reinforcing steel shall meet the requirements of ASTM A615
(AASHTO M31, Grade 60). All reinforcing steel shall be epoxy coated
coated in accordance with MoDOT Section 1036.3 or galvanized in
accordance with AASHTO M111.
C. Concrete: Cement and fly ash shall comply with the requirements of
MoDOT Sections 1019 and 1018 respectively.
Fine and course
aggregates shall comply with the quality requirements of MoDOT Section
1005.
D. Concrete Mix: The concrete mix shall be designed by the pre-caster and
submitted to the CM for review prior to production. The mix shall be
subject to the following limitations:
1. The amount of cementatious material shall not be less than 564
pounds per cubic yard.
2. Fly ash, if used, shall constitute no more than 15% of the total
cementatious material in the mix.
3. Retarding or accelerating admixtures or any additive containing
chlorides shall not be used.
4. The concrete shall be designed with an air entrainment content shall
be between 4% and 7%.
E. Concrete wall units shall have a minimum 28 day compressive strength of
4000 psi in accordance with ASTM C-90. The concrete shall have
adequate freeze/thaw protection with a maximum moisture absorption
rate of 6%.
F. No panels shall be shipped until 7 days after casting and until the
specified compressive strength has been attained.
G. All units shall be sound and free of cracks or other defects that would
interfere with the proper placing of the unit or significantly impair the
strength or permanence of the construction. Minor cracks incidental to

the usual method of manufacture, or minor chipping resulting from
customary methods of handling in shipment and delivery, are not grounds
for rejection.
H. Finished panel dimensions shall be within (6mm) of those shown on
the shop drawings. Locations of embedded hardware shall be within
(6mm). The difference between the two diagonals shall not exceed
(13mm).
I. Each panel shall be marked in an inconspicuous place with the
manufacturers identification, piece mark, date of manufacture and
production lot number.
J. Concrete Masonry Units: Design and construction of concrete masonry
units shall comply with the applicable requirements of ACI 530.1
Specifications for Masonry Structures and ASTM C90 Standard
Specifications for Load Bearing Concrete Masonry Units.
K. Mortar shall comply with the requirements of ASTM C270 Specification
for Mortar for Unit Masonry.
L. Grout shall comply with the requirements of ASTM C476 Specification
for Grout for Masonry.
M. Panel Connections: Cable-type panel connector assemblies shall be all
stainless steel, aircraft-type, 7 x 19 strand, minimum 3/8 inch (11mm)
diameter, with a rated breaking strength of 12,000 pounds (5443 kg)
minimum. All connections of the post and panels to the foundation, and
panel to panel, shall be designed using a minimum safety factor of two or
as specified in the AASHTO guide. All exposed steel parts, except as
specified above, shall be galvanized or stainless steel.
N. Posts shall be pre-cast, reinforced concrete except as otherwise shown
on the Contract Drawings. Final color shall match, to the satisfaction of
the engineer, that of adjacent panels. The contractor shall submit to the
engineer a detailed painting plan prior to the work. Post attachment to
the panel may be by casting integrally with the panel, tongue-and-groove
connection, or by bolting the panel in mid-section to the post. Post
attachment to the footing may be by steel anchor plate or by embedment
in poured concrete. Post construction and connection details shall be
specified in the shop drawings.
O. Shop drawings shall specify the diameter and depth of augured post
holes. Poured concrete shall be in accordance with the reinforcement
specified in the AASHTO guide and shall be on the shop drawings.

P. Acceptance of the pre-cast panels or masonry units will be based on
compliance with the contract requirements, freedom from defects in
workmanship, and color and surface texture acceptable to the engineer.
PART 3

EXECUTION

3.01

PRECAST CONCRETE SCREEN ERECTION

A. First course of concrete wall units shall be placed on the base footing.
The units shall be checked for level and alignment. The first course is the
most important to insure accurate and acceptable results.
B. Insure that the units are in full contact with base.
C. Units are placed side by side for full length of wall alignment. Alignment
may be done by means of a string line or laser offset from base line or
straight wall construction.

3.02

FOUNDATIONS
A. Subbase: Minimal allowable soil bearing capacity shall be 1500 psf
(1489 mPa). Prior to placement of the aggregate base, the existing soil
below the base shall be tested for compaction. Compaction shall meet at
least 95% of the maximum dry density as determined by AASHTO T99,
Method C.
If the existing foundation material fails to meet this
requirement, the Contractor shall remove foundation material to a depth
of one foot or less as determined by the CM. The Contractor shall then
either replace and compact the excavated material, or backfill with
approved aggregate material.

3.03

INSTALLATION
A. The wall panels shall be installed in accordance with the drawings, the
manufacturers recommendations, and the manufacturers approved
drawings. Minor field modifications in the alignment may be required to
avoid obstacles such as utilities, and existing landscaping, as determined
by the Resident Engineer. Any tree trimming or tree removal required
shall be considered to be included in the wall contract. The contractor
shall not perform any tree work without the CMs approval.
1.

December 01, 2010

Joints and connections shall be secured in such a manner as to be

structurally sound, with no visible openings for sound transmission or
light leaks.

2.

In locations where the wall is situated on a slope that carries existing

drainage, the wall shall be installed to allow water to pass through.
Suitable methods include placing coarse aggregate below a pier
supported wall or the use of a gutter and culvert system. Details of
installation shall be included in the contractors proposed wall plans.

3.

Within fourteen days of erection of any panel, the adjacent

embedment backfill shall be placed to the lines and grades as shown
on the manufacturers approved drawings. The embedment backfill
shall be placed in lifts not exceeding 8 (loose) and shall be
compacted to not less than 90% of the maximum dry density as
determined by AASHTO T-99.

4.

Backfill shall be sloped a minimum of 5% away from the panels on

both sides, where possible, to prevent puddling.
