Prize Money to Charities
President Obama will donate $1.4
million from his Nobel Peace Prize
to several charities, according to a
White House press release.
Obama will donate a total of
$750,000 to six groups that assist
students going to college. The
Clinton-Bush Haiti Fund, which
helps to rebuild the devastated
country, will receive $200,000.
Fisher House, which supplies
housing for the families of
hospitalized veterans, will receive
$250,000.
“These organizations do
extraordinary work in the United
States and abroad helping students,
veterans and countless others in
need,” the president said in the
statement. “I’m proud to support
their work.”
Donations to the Fisher House
will help fund new temporary
lodgings at Bethesda Naval Hospital
and Dover Air Force Base for
family members of injured and slain
soldiers.

A New Jersey man is in custody
in Yemen for allegedly killing a
bodyguard and having ties to al-

of al-Qaeda that attempted to bomb a
Detroit-bound airliner on Christmas
day. He is accused of killing a guard
in an attempt to escape a hospital on
March 10, officials said.

the United States, is a natural-born
U.S. citizen who is Black and was
classified by Yemeni officials as a
Somali-American. He was one of 11
al-Qaeda suspects who were arrested
after a security sweep in Yemen’s
capital of San’a this month.

staging area, the Pentagon has
proposed spending $150 million to
help Yemen battle terrorism.

Youth Jobs Program Cut

While the scarcity of jobs has posed a big problem for the
economy as a whole, it has been even worse in Washington,
D.C., where the unemployment rate currently hovers around 12
percent. And for the city’s youth, who are often overlooked in
favor of older, experienced workers, the statistics are even more
devastating.
Officials say with the launch of the annual Summer Youth
Employment Program in June, the expectation is to hire some
22,000 between the ages of 16 and 24 – many of which will
come from low-income backgrounds. But, this year, the $40
million program will be contracted from 10 weeks to just six
weeks due to budget constraints and other issues surrounding
its efficiency.
“In the past [such as with the 2008 debacle that proved
an embarrassment for the Fenty administration], the mayor
didn’t really show that he had the ability to run the program as
efficiently as it could have been run,” said At-large Councilman
Michael Brown, who recently succeeded Ward 8 Councilman
Marion Barry as chairman of the Committee on Housing and
Workforce Development. “And it resulted in a nightmare and
horror stories for a lot of young people.”

can do in their lives,” Brown said. “And that’s really what the
foundation of the program is all about.”
Last year at this time, the unemployment rate among teens
stood at 22.7 percent – more than double the rate for all of the
country’s jobless people. And according to the Bureau of Labor
Statistics, from April to July 2009, the number of employed
youth ages 16 to 24 years old increased by 1.6 million to 19.3
million.
Eshauna Smith, spokeswoman for the D.C. Alliance for
Youth, said that while her organization has always had good
access to SYEP, its major concern has revolved around the
quality of jobs and of the program itself – particularly in light
of the 2008 mess-up.

“Youth in this city definitely have an opportunity to get jobs
this summer,” Smith said. “But our concern is in the quality
of jobs and the experience of its management, which has not
always been up to par.”
Smith said, however, that her agency has submitted a list
of recommendations to the city to help ensure a better-run
program.
“We want to make sure that our participants will be
working and learning skills, rather than just sitting around with
nothing meaningful to do,” Smith said. “So far, our youth have
never had a problem getting the jobs; it’s what happens once
they are in the program.”

U.S. Postal Service Considers Cutting Saturday Mail Delivery

While Americans may be
accustomed to Saturday mail
delivery and being able to frequent
post offices close to their homes,
massive deficits could strip away
these conveniences, The Associated
Press reported.
Postmaster General John E. Potter
requested that lawmakers abolish
the agency’s mandatory Saturday
delivery.
According to The New York
Times, the Postal Service has been
required to pay its own costs since
1970. It was able to make a profit
until 2006, but more Americans
started using e-mail and paying their
bills online, forcing it to fall in the
red.
“If current trends continue, we
could experience a net loss of $6
billion or more this fiscal year,”
Potter told the AP.
Total mail volume decreased
by $9 billion in 2009, the biggest
volume decrease in the Postal
Service’s history.
Potter estimated that ending
six-day mail delivery would save
$40 billion over the next decade.
He also wants to close various
post offices and remove them with
cheaper kiosks and postal windows
at supermarkets. Potter is also
requesting to increase the rates of
some services to meet changes in
demand and costs.
Yvette Singh, media spokesperson
for the USPS, also added that
changes needed to be made for the
betterment of the company.
“We need to save and be more
efficient as a company,” Signh
told the AFRO. “In order for us to
maintain viability, we have to make
some major adjustments. [Also],
we’re not federally funded. We pay
our expenses from the sale of our
products and services, so we’re not
receiving any federal money to assist
us.”
While it appears as if these drastic
changes could automatically save the
falling service, the New York Times
reported that some of the proposed
changes still remain flawed.
In efforts to save $50 billion over
the next decade, Potter is stopping
contributions to a fund to pay for
future retiree health benefits,
covering them instead on a pay-as-
you-go basis. But as many workers
across the country have discovered,
unfinanced promises of future
benefits usually are prone to become
worthless during economic slumps.
However, the service may be
allowed to decrease its annual
contribution. Currently, the Postal
Service is required by law to make
contributions with a 7 percent
annual rate of inflation for healthcare
expenses, while Medicare uses a 5
percent to 6 percent rate to predict
future benefits.
While Americans currently
rely heavily on e-mail, the Postal
Service is not totally obsolete. Legal
documents, packages and letters still
have to be mailed. Also, citizens in
some areas of the country have to
rely solely on the Postal Service for
lack of other resources.
“If given the flexibility to respond
to an evolving marketplace, the
Postal Service will continue to be
an integral part of the fabric of
American life,” Potter said in a USPS
press release.

The census is a
constitutional mandate that is
conducted every 10 years and
its goal is to provide the federal
government an accurate head
count of all people living in the
United States.
Each year, for the next 10 years, the counts will enable
states and communities to derive their fair share of benefits
from more than $400 billion in federal funding. The less
people counted, the less resources for respective jurisdictions.
The census form itself is short, taking just 10 minutes to fill
out. Its 10 questions query households on simple data such as
how many people live in the home and their ethnicities.
But according to Census Bureau officials, it is particularly
imperative that children be counted because many of the
programs and services funded by federal allocations concern
their well being.
Census Bureau Director Robert Groves said people
often express surprise upon learning children are routinely
undercounted.
“The first [thing] is that the adult groups that tend to be
undercounted also tend to have more children in their homes
. . . and there has been evidence that the adults filling out the
census questionnaire tend to forget babies and very young
children,” Groves said via his blog on the 2010 Census Web
site. “Secondly, this might be due to the misconception that the
census is designed more to record adults than young children.”
Groves further stated that if newborns aren’t included in
the current count which launches this week, by the time the
2020 census rolls around those same children will have been
essentially invisible until they reached the fifth grade.
Ballinger said her agency recently partnered with
Nickelodeon to produce a television spot featuring Dora the
Explorer, the popular children’s character on the network’s
award-winning animated preschool series.
“There are several other partners that are using the
campaign we created as well as a fact sheet to ensure that
children are being counted,” Ballinger said. “We have also
recorded public service announcements in English and Spanish
that are going to be running on Nickelodeon, and we’re going
to be distributing the PSAs to all the radio stations as well.”
The census also helps when it comes to funding,
constructing and renovating schools. Therefore, the bureau has
also created the “Census in the Schools 2010: It’s About Us”
program that provides educators with resources to teach the

running in 2010.
“I like Wayne and he’s
a friend of mine but I don’t
believe he is going to run for
governor,” said Del. Barbara
Frush (D-Dist. 21). “I know
he is working very hard to
get Rushern Baker elected [to
the State Legislature] and I’m
sure that’s taking up a good
deal of his extra time.”
In the current political
climate though, Walters
believes that if Curry does
run he stands little chance of
winning.
“You would have to unseat
a sitting governor by finding
out he’s done something
really bad,” Walters said.
“O’Malley has not really done
anything egregious to cause
people to look around to find
something else.
“What would you change
by electing Curry? Would the
economic situation change
if you elected Curry? The
answer to that is no. I don’t
know what Curry can offer
in order to make people
change their minds and unseat
O’Malley.”
Whatever happens, Curry
has made it clear that he
thinks things need to change.
He said, “There is
a current practice of
indifference and invincibility,
but there is really an
unsatisfied hunger for
leadership, seriousness and
accountability.”

Bank of America to Help Customers Avoid Overdraft Fees

Bank of America announced this week its intentions to help
customers avoid overdraft fees on debit card purchases. Starting
this summer, the Charlotte, N.C.-based bank will only authorize
single debit card transactions at the point of sale if a customer
has enough money in their account at the time.
The announcement arrives on the heels of the Federal
Reserve’s recent decision to enforce guidelines that will prevent
banks from automatically enrolling customers in overdraft
protection programs, a guideline effective this July. And
while the decision could potentially collapse revenue by the
millions, it’s clear that customer service is the focal point for one of the world’s largest financial
institutions.
“Our customers have been clear that they want to know if a purchase is going to overdraw
their account,” Deposits and Card Product Executive Susan Faulkner said in a press release.
“Our solution is simple, clear and helps customers control their finances by reducing the
possibility of over-extending themselves at the point of sale with a debit card.”
The change will be a welcomed one for frequent Bank of America debit card holders.
Because the bank was unable to alert customers of when their account balance was running
low or if it was overdrawn, incurring multiple overdraft fees was a common problem for most
offenders.
“Our customers have been clear that they want
to know if a purchase is going to overdraw
their account...”
“We understand that the environment has changed, and we
are changing with it,” said Faulkner. “We will continue to make
changes to our products, services and solutions that deliver more
value to our customers by providing the clarity, control and
choice they need to better manage their everyday finances.”
When the change is implemented, customers with insufficient

will be prompted that a $35 overdraft fee will be charged if they
choose to continue their transaction and they will be asked to confirm or decline the decision.
Until then Bank of America customers will still be charged overdraft fees for bounced checks
and payments that are automatically withdrawn from their accounts without sufficient funds.
But with the cancellation of multiple overdraft fees, customers are just thankful that the bank is
attempting to help them out.
“I think it’s an excellent move,” Bank of America customer Lillian Prince said. “They
should’ve had this when I was in college buying $42 Happy Meals.”
In 2009, banks generated close to $20 billion from overdraft fees on debit purchases and
ATM transactions and another $12 billion by covering checks and recurring bills, according to
Moebs Services, an economic research firm.

Several local tea party leaders said Thomas’ involvement
gives the movement a stamp of legitimacy.
“Of course [her involvement] helps,” said Tony Passaro,
organizer of the Federation of Maryland Tea Party Patriots.
“As the wife of a Supreme Court justice she has a lot of
visibility. Her involvement increases the visibility of the whole
movement.”
Ron Wilcox, head of the Alexandria Tea Party in Virginia,
agreed with Passaro as he excitedly spoke about her
involvement.
“This is wonderful. I’m delighted that she’ll be doing such
a thing,” Wilcox said. “It is one of the number of steps that has
come forward that has advanced the credibility and the viability
of the tea party movement.”
There is a sentiment, however, that her move is a further
setback for Clarence Thomas in the eyes of many African
Americans.
Clarence Thomas’ conservative past and involvement in
the Anita Hill scandal has always been a source of controversy
within the African-American community. Some say this may
be the icing on the cake.
“[Clarence Thomas] is already alienated from the Black
community and I don’t know how much further he can get,” said
Ronald Walters, director of the African American Leadership
Center, and professor of government and politics at the University
of Maryland College Park. “His wife played a very early role in
his confirmation so this is really not surprising to me.”
Walters added that it is a little unnerving that that the
wife of a Supreme Court Justice is joining this movement
given the “vicious conservatism” he believes dogs the tea
party movement. Given the Thomases’ contacts within the
Republican Party, he thinks it could be part of a Republican
strategy to gain more support.
“There’s an attempt on the part of the Republican Party
to incorporate the tea party movement,” said Walters. “It’s
possible that she’s becoming involved in that effort.”
However, members of the movement dismiss that concern
as they believe she’s just expressing her rights as a U.S. citizen.
“She has every right to express her political opinion,” said
Wilcox. “She’s not a Supreme Court Justice.
“People have their own interests and want to advance them.
She shouldn’t be hobbled by her husband’s profession.”

It won’t be enough to satisfy some, and
too much for the taste of others, and yet it
will be a step forward in the quest to make
health care a right, not a privilege, something
that progressives have been advocating for
decades.
Once this legislation is negotiated,
however, what’s next? There is a national
clamoring for legislation that will address
the employment situation, and President
Obama has indicated his willingness to look
at jobs. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s
proposed legislation that offers a scant $15
billion in tax breaks for businesses is not
exactly job creation legislation.
What really needs to happen is that,
failing other options, our nation needs to
makes sense for this administration to look
at the consumer protection agency it has
proposed. Some would like to see this agency
located inside the Federal Reserve, but that
makes no sense. That is much like asking Al
Capone to guard Fort Knox.
Instead, a freestanding agency will
provide much-needed independence to those
who protect consumers. Unfortunately, some
of the members of Congress who agree that
consumer protection is necessary have been
persuaded that a good location for the agency
might be the Federal Reserve.
The environment and global warming
issues must be addressed by this
administration. Months after the UN
Copenhagen meetings on global warming,
other concerns have rendered the Obama
administration virtually mute on climate
matters.
With Earth Day coming up on April 22,
it would be great if the administration could
step up to promises it made in Copenhagen
and commit to reducing our nation’s carbon
footprint.
International concerns are as important
as the domestic concerns of health, jobs,
consumer protection and the environment. We
are in two wars, in Afghanistan and in Iraq.
Thousands of American lives have been lost
thanks to the pointless aggressive policies
of the Bush administration. Hundreds of
thousands of American soldiers are at risk in
Iraq and Afghanistan, and our policies toward
these countries – despite pronouncements –
seem little changed from our policies in the
Bush years. If you walk down Pennsylvania
Avenue past the White House, there is a tall,
grey-bearded man with a pink sign singing and
humming us out of Iraq. He is almost a fixture
– he (or someone who looks very much like
him) has been standing in that same spot for
more than a year.
The Obama administration cannot exhale
when health care reform legislation passes.
Indeed, the time and effort put into health
care have resulted in a backlog of issues
that must be addressed. With a forecast that
unemployment rates will not drop to 6 percent
before 2015, the focus for the spring must be
jobs, jobs, jobs.

Statement on Immigration Reform
Yesterday President Obama reaffirmed his
commitment to drive an immigration reform
bill forward this spring. We echo the urgency
in the president’s message.
The AFL-CIO and the entire labor
movement remain committed to
comprehensive immigration reform and united
around the framework for reform that we
put forth a year ago. Our framework protects
American workers, secures our borders,
ensures that employers hire authorized
workers and creates a path to citizenship
for those who came to our country illegally.
It also provides a rational and reasonable
approach to future flow, which ties the number
of new foreign workers coming into the US
labor market to established labor shortages.
Under our approach, the numbers – which
would be established through an independent
commission – would be much higher during
robust economic times than they would be in
times like today. The advocacy community,
including the Reform Immigration for
America campaign of which we are a member,
has adopted this same approach.
American workers are facing a
prolonged jobs crisis and nearly 10 percent
unemployment, with no sign of recovery in
sight. If immigration reform is to have any
chance of passing this year, the Chamber of
Commerce is going to have to abandon its
insistence on the creation of a new temporary
worker program and embrace a solution based
on real employment needs. A new temporary
worker program in today’s economy would be
political suicide, and the Chamber must know
that.
We need immigration reform now. The
more we delay, the worse the problem
becomes. It’s time to move forward and stop
playing politics with a problem we should
have fixed a long time ago.

Fed Up With Politicians
Had we all listened to OBAMA we all
would have been shot up with the swine flu
vaccine. Obama attempted to create a national
panic so that making such shots mandatory
would have been an easy thing to do.
He also lied about not being for mandatory
health insurance to get elected.
And Rep. [Steny] Hoyer and Rep. Chris
Carney still goose step in unison for Obama
Care, which is health care at gun point. Has
Hoyer ever questioned why 39 other countries
have higher average life spans than us?
President Eisenhower warned us about the
Military Industrial Complex. A much bigger
threat which Hoyer and Carney bow to is the
Pharmaceutical Industrial Complex. As bad as
Canada is they still live two years longer than
we do.

Maryland’s Constitutional Crisis
 Maryland recently recognized same sex
marriages for the purpose of marital benefits.
The recognition of same sex marriages
performed in other states was not enacted by
the Maryland Legislature nor was it mandated
by Maryland courts; rather it was the
independent decision of Maryland’s Attorney
General Douglas Gansler, released on Feb. 24.
 Because this was a blatant attack on
Maryland’s current law that states: Only a
marriage between a man and a woman is valid
in this state” and because this action is clearly
a violation of the separation of powers related
to the three branches of government, the
attorney general was put on public notice that
impeachment charges were being drafted.
 As if the attorney general was not in
enough hot water, on March 1 he declared
himself unimpeachable in an attempt to
thwart any attempt by the Legislature to hold
him accountable for usurping their authority.
Unbelievably, the attorney general went
to a subordinate member of his staff, Dan
Friedman to write the letter addressed to
Maryland’s speaker of the House, stating that
the attorney general could not be removed by
impeachment.
Mr. Gansler’s actions have put Maryland
in a constitutional crisis. The highest law
officer in the state who is an elected member
of the executive branch of government has
violated his oath of office and has revealed
his incompetence, and his willful neglect
of duty. As a constitutional officer, he must
ensure that the provisions of the state and U.S.
constitutions are upheld in all cases, including
a constitutional charge against him.
Attorney General Gansler testified in his
official capacity two years ago in support of
a gay marriage bill. He said that it would be
hard to not try to correct an injustice in the
law. His testimony publically revealed his
partial and prejudiced position on the subject
of same sex marriage. Mr. Gansler violated his
oath of office in which he swore to perform
his duties in an impartial and unprejudiced
manner.
After revealing his bias on the issue,
he was asked by a member of the Senate
to advise on the legality of Maryland
recognizing same sex marriage contracted in
other states. Despite the fact that the Office of
the Attorney General addressed that very same
question in 2004, and despite the fact that no
court ruling, or legislation has overturned that
2004 opinion, Mr. Gansler released a “new”
opinion in which he “interprets” the law as
supporting the legality of recognizing out of
state same sex marriages.
In short, the attorney general decided that
a standing Maryland law is an “injustice” and
subsequently misused the authority of his
office to effectively change the law without
having gone through the legislative process
defined in the Maryland Constitution.
If this goes unchallenged, the next attorney
general is likely to follow this precedent and
usurp the authority of the legislature based on
his personal bias. As result, citizens will no
longer have the representation that is provided
them under the Constitution.
The stage is now set in Maryland for a
constitutional show down. On March 31 a
charge of impeachment will be brought before
the Maryland House of Delegates at roughly
10:05 am. The House speaker has publically
stated that he will rule the charge out of order
citing the opinion that the attorney general
cannot be impeached as the authority for the
out of order ruling.
Regardless of your personal view on same
sex marriage, the recent activities of the
Maryland Attorney General should give us
reason to pause. Again, the Maryland attorney
general has taken for himself; the powers
vested in the legislature and declared himself
unimpeachable and unaccountable to the
citizens of Maryland?

Jobs Bill – Good Politics, Bad Policy
There’s an old saying:
“Don’t bring a slingshot to a
gunfight.” But that’s just what
the Congress appears to be
doing with its timid approach
to job creation. Last week,
the House of Representatives
joined the Senate in passing
a $15 billion jobs bill that
would hardly make a dent in
the depression-era levels of
unemployment afflicting all
parts of the country, especially
communities of color.

Statistics are being hailed in some quarters as a clear sign that
the recession is over. Tell that to the 15 million Americans who
remain out of work or the untold numbers of families teetering
on the brink of financial ruin.
While the overall jobless rate remained steady in February
at 9.7 percent, African-American unemployment is now at
15.8 percent, a 6.8 percent increase since the start of the
recession in December 2007. The Hispanic jobless rate of 12.4
percent was virtually unchanged from January. And when you

factor in the huge number of people who have stopped looking
for work and those who are working part-time only because
they can’t find a full-time job, the total “underemployment”
rate has climbed to a staggering 16.8 percent. Another 36,000

jobs were lost during the month, a number that was lower than
expected, but still intolerably high. It is abundantly clear - the
great recession rages on.
So what does the Congress do in the face of this crisis?
The House passed a scaled-back $15 billion Senate jobs bill
that gives tax breaks to businesses to hire new workers and
includes some needed investments in infrastructure projects.
Most analysts say this will create only a few hundred thousand
jobs at a time when 10 million jobs are needed just to get back
to pre-recession levels. That’s why a majority of Congressional
Black Caucus members, led by Chairwoman Barbara Lee
of California, voted against the measure. And it is why the
National Urban League is calling on the Congress to go back
and get it right.
Last November, the National Urban League presented the
White House and congressional leaders a robust six-point
plan for putting Americans back to work. Our plan places
a priority on help for the chronically unemployed, which
includes African Americans and other communities of color
experiencing unemployment rates significantly higher than
the national average. It would create 3 million jobs. We are
recommending that future legislation include:
• Funding direct job creation
• Expansion and acceleration of the Small Business
Administration’s Community Express Loan Program and
inclusion of minority contractors for transportation projects
funded through the stimulus bill
• The creation of Green Empowerment Zones
• The Expansion of housing counseling programs nationwide
• The Expansion of the Youth Summer Jobs Program for
2010
• The creation of 100 urban job academies to implement and
expand the Urban Youth Empowerment Program (UYEP)

Tea with Omar Sharif

When I read that Egypt’s
Journalist Union had punished
two senior Egyptian editors
one a member of the country’s
ruling party and the other an
expert on Jewish affairs for
violating its ban on contacts
with Israel – I wondered if
Omar Sharif ever thinks of
me.
My nemesis wasn’t the
once-heartthrob Egyptian
actor but a State Security
officer in Cairo whose nom de
Mona Eltahawy
guerre was Omar Sharif and
who, for six months in 1999,
tormented me for moving to Jerusalem as a correspondent for
Reuters. There is no law that bans Egyptians from visiting
Israel but everyone knows that once you do, State Security will
invite you over for “a cup of tea” – i.e., an interrogation.
I got Sharif’s note inviting me for tea during a quick visit to
Cairo the year I lived in Israel. “Miss Mona, an officer left this
for you,” the doorman’s wife Umm Mokhtar said. An ebullient
woman not easily intimidated, she was unusually subdued as
she handed me the note, which I shoved absentmindedly into a
jacket pocket. I was on my way to the airport, late as usual.
I did not think of him again until my next trip to Cairo a
few months later, when my brother’s very anxious father-in-
law took me aside. Once he mentioned the name Omar Sharif,
I knew the surreal had kicked down the door into my life.
When I didn’t call Omar, he had gone to my apartment
building and dragged Umm Mokhtar’s husband to the nearest
police station for questioning as to my whereabouts. After the
poor man convinced Omar that all he knew was that I was
abroad somewhere, Omar went back to my apartment building
where he spoke to the man from whom my parents had bought
the apartment and who acted as de facto landlord.
He told Omar that all he knew about me was that I was a
journalist and he offered the telephone number of my brother’s
father-in-law who was looking after any matters regarding the
apartment because my entire family lived abroad.
I told our relative I’d go in and see Omar. By the time we
had our cup of tea, I’d resigned from Reuters and was back
living in Cairo. Tall and bulky, Omar Sharif wore a shiny
purple suit. He had a mustache and every sentence ended in an
exclamation, usually not in my favor.
“Mona Eltahawy! Finally! You’re a real character!” Omar
shouted. “Who on earth goes to Israel? I have to meet your
father. If my daughter ever told me she wanted to go to Israel
I’d break her neck!”
Stepping into his office, I walked into a thick wall of
cologne – one of those Calvin Klein unisex scents fashionable
about 10 years earlier. I didn’t know whether to feel flattered
or worried.
“You see this file,” he said, “this is all you. Look – orders to
have you followed, orders to tap your telephone. You’re a lot
of trouble, you know.”
What had I been saying on the phone lately?
He left for a few moments to go and say his noon prayers.
I sat alone in the room watching an Arabic language news
channel that had the volume muted. I didn’t know if I was in
trouble or not.
“So do you pray?” he asked when he came back.
“I do.”
“No way! You don’t look like the praying kind.”
“Who said religion had a look?” I ventured. Wrong, wrong,
wrong. I was falling right into every trap he set for me.
“Well of course there’s a look to being religious,” he said.
“Our religion is very specific about what’s wrong and
what’s right. Take the traveling you like so much. A woman
shouldn’t travel alone.”
I let that bait go. I was learning.
“Are you married? How old are you?” He continued.
“I’m 31.” I joke I’m married to my job.
“You can never get married. Who’s going to want to marry
you with the life you lead, every day in a different city? You’ll
end up with a man like my brother, a womanizer, who’ll cheat
on you,” he said.
And so on and so forth till he got up, shook my hand and
told me to call him if I ever needed help.
I tried to forget Omar.
A few months later as I visited my brothers-in-law with my
parents and sister – in town for a while – the telephone rang. It
was Omar Sharif. He knew my father was in town. They spoke
for a few moments. The next day, my father and mother said
they wanted to talk to me.
“What did he mean when he said you were living a life that
was not suitable for Egypt?” my father asked. After kicking
down the door, the surreal was dancing on the rooftop of my
life.
A distant relative, who had recently retired from State
Security, was called. Omar Sharif’s paternalism had set the
men in motion to save Mona.
“Mona, the guy’s already married,” the relative said
after investigating. “I thought he wanted to marry you or
something.”
“I know – he showed me his wife’s picture,” I replied.
He gave me the number of Omar’s supervising officer so that I
could call him if Omar ever bothered me again.
About a year later, I pressed play on the flashing telephone
answering machine.
“Peace be upon you Miss Mona. I’m just calling to see how
you are. Give me a call when you hear this message. This is, of
course, your ‘brother,’ Omar Sharif.”

I have made it my habit to never admit to being a
conservative unless I am allowed to define what that means.
It is routinely and wrongly asserted that the conservative
objects to change. Frankly it is a fallacious argument the new
left routinely makes and one conservatives far too frequently
– and to our detriment – neglect to refute. The fact is that
to conserve has never meant simply arguing for the status
quo. Conservatives might be more properly understood if we
referred to ourselves as conservationists.
Like conservationists conservatives are not content with
current conditions. Rather they are both seeking to prevent
the depletion of some treasured resource. Both conservatives
and conservationists act to defend and protect; to restore, to
supervise and nurture those things essential for the survival
of a society or culture. Preservation is achieved through
education and prudent management or husbandry.
For many citizens stepping forward and demanding that
we conserve trees or some rare species of bird is looked upon
as a noble undertaking. It is a pity that some of those same
eyes view the act of conserving, defending, restoring and
supervising the prudent management of the principles upon
which this nation was founded as a whacky or evil endeavor.
Equiano was correct and the power of that small idea – to
quote a young Muhammad Ali – “Shook up the world!” I
would submit that conserving that idea and the principles
which grew from it are as important as conserving our natural
resources. Better yet I contend that idea and those principles
are our greatest natural resource.

Real Estate Mogul Sheds Light on Housing Market

The collapse of the real estate market has turned the
American Dream into an American nightmare for several
homeowners. Foreclosures, bankruptcies and lost equity have
reduced a once profitable investment idea into a now dangerous
gamble.
A record 937,840 homes received foreclosure letters in the
third quarter of 2009 as reported by RealtyTrac—a fanciful
prospect for first time homebuyers and investors looking for a
swift deal but demoralizing for homeowners on the opposite
end of the spectrum. The market has been especially trying for
middle-class Blacks who have used homeownership as a means
of building wealth. A combination of job cuts and poor real
estate decisions have created horror stories within the African-
American community; stories that have caused many aspiring
investors to shy away from a possible life of stagnant home
sales, unpaid bills and harassing collector calls.
But, Nathaniel Arnold, author of The Best Real Estate
Investing Method....EVER! doesn’t believe that ambitious
homeowners should look away from their dreams, they just
need to be aware of their surroundings.
“There are a lot of very good deals to be had right now and
people need to be aware of that,” Arnold said. “Instead of trying
to do it by themselves they need to work with people who are
confident and can help them both find deals and execute them
properly.”
He added, “People don’t know the different kind of
financing options that [are available] and that’s just a matter
of their agent educating them about that. When they don’t
know how much they can afford or what kind of financing is
available they tend to sometimes get financing that is a point
or two higher than what they could’ve gotten. In the last two
years African Americans were sort of steered into typically high
mortgages.”
Arnold, a successful real estate investor, has been involved
in the housing market for over 20 years. Throughout his tenure
he’s seen both the beauty and the beast that is homeownership.
Despite the ever changing faces, he still believes that the safest
and quickest route to wealth is through real estate investing.
And while popular television programs paint the field as one
of quick flips and substantial gains, Arnold warns that those

depictions are simply fallacious.
“Real estate is a long term investment, it’s not get rich quick
despite what [people] see on television,” Arnold said. “Real
estate is a long-term business; it can be very lucrative but you
have to have the right attitude to pursue it.”
Pursuing real estate, however, has been placed on the back
burner for many struggling Black families. Layoffs and salary
cuts have led to unemployment and financial handicaps, a pair
of cement shoes in the flooded housing market. The Economic
Policy Institute, a Washington, D.C. think tank, reported
in March that close to 16 percent of Blacks are currently
unemployed nationally, a number that could rise to 18.2 percent
by mid-2010 according to projections.
Although the absence of jobs and overpriced homes have
caused immediate problems for families, the lasting effects
on future generations could be equally as troublesome. Black
youths are now staring at the possibility of tuition losses,
working extended hours and the void of a safe haven to
call home. The idea of passing down real estate from one
generation to the next is one of the deciding factors in acquiring
property. With the market’s recent downward spiral, maturing
adolescents may be in line to grow up quicker than expected.
“African Americans typically have most of their wealth tied
up into the equity in their homes and they use that wealth to
help their kids get through school, take vacations and finance
their lifestyles to a certain degree,” Arnold said. “Because
of what’s gone on with foreclosures and the price of housing
going down in a lot of areas, they don’t have that equity to
pull from anymore so it’s caused everybody to do some belt
tightening [and] college rethinking.”
As vicious as the market has been, it’s slowing beginning
to round back into form. Local reports have pointed to signs
of life in both the District and Baltimore housing markets
and most experts have called for a national recovery by
2011. Although most investors remain skeptical, reports are
encouraging. And with a rapidly changing job market, the
decision to buy a home still ranks as one of the surest ways to
ensure a nest egg to pull from once retirement arrives.
“There are a lot more people who want to invest in real
estate so they are looking at what kind of options they have
because they understand their pension may not be there when
they want to retire,” Arnold said. “They may not have a job
that’s going to keep them until they get a pension so people are
looking for avenues to invest in and real estate provides that for
them.”

Web-based Series Spotlights Single

Mothers

Robert Townsend, known for his string of classic Black-
themed films and television programs, is bringing another
facet of Africa-American life to the forefront in his latest
effort, “Diary of a Single Mom.”
In this Web-based series directed by Townsend and written
by screenwriter Cheryl L. West, three single mothers and their
families are featured, showing the many challenges they face.
Actress Monica Calhoun stars as Ocean, a single mother
of two, who ruthlessly pushes to keep her family afloat while
working to fulfill her dream of obtaining her GED. Janice
Lynde stars as Peggy, a widow and guardian of a grandchild,
who is struggling with financial issues. And Valery Ortiz stars
as Lupe, a mother juggling both of her children’s fathers while
also facing health concerns. The women experience life’s
journeys and find solace in their friendship while searching for
support and faith.
Stars of the show hope to cater to viewers who are
interested in seeing shows that tell “stories that are a little bit
off from mainstream,” actor Leon, who stars as Mike, said in a
teleconference about the series.
Leon also discussed the importance of viewers recognizing
great performances, despite whether the actors are A-list or
not.

Natalie Randolph, that is,

million. Since then, Hank
just hangs around and says,

Blowouts, buzzer beaters and upsets. If
you caught any of last weekend’s conference
tournament games then you saw it all. You
saw why Evan Turner is the best player in
college basketball and why guys like John
Wall, Eric Bledsoe and DeMarcus Cousins are
special freshmen. You saw how momentum in
basketball games can switch at the drop of a
dime and why coaches get paid top dollar to
reel in fancy recruits and lead their schools to
victory.
It was basketball in its purest form, minus
the stretch limos and overbearing personalities
of professional city teams. I mean, sure there’s
a John Calipari here or a Lance Stephenson
there, but it doesn’t get any better than the
NCAA come March. College basketball in the
spring is a dangerous combination. You can
have your NBA Finals in June and your World
Series and NFL Playoffs – they just don’t
measure up to tournament time.
There’s something unique and innocent
about March Madness. The games are played
during the day while you’re at work trying
to get a peek at the cafeteria television to
see your favorite team. You fall in love with
schools whose location on a map you can’t
identify quickly. You lose every year but still
play the office and online brackets hoping for
some luck. Why? Because March Madness
affects everybody, not just you or your
neighbor and coworkers, that’s why!
And what is it? Just what is it that
Yes you, Morgan State University; yes
you, Georgetown University; yes you, the
University of Maryland College Park—three
schools so vastly different in so many ways
but all in this thing together that we call
March Madness.
It’s crazy. The love affair with your
alma mater never dies. Whether you wore a
school’s colors when you were in line at its
college bookstore or because grandma caught
a Christmas sale, everybody has a favorite
school come March. When they lose, you
sulk. And, when they win, you gain an extra
day of color donning and smack talking. It’s
that simple.
Look high and low, you’ll never find a
greater sports playoff system than the NCAA’s
version. Other sports do you wrong. One loss
during college football’s regular season and
a school might as well call it quits. The NBA
Finals has proven that you can just nickel

because one’s scared of getting hit and the
MLB is still flipping through drug tests from
10 years ago.
So March Madness it is. Not to say the
NCAA is the epitome of stainless steel but
at least you won’t find as many blemishes
as those other sports. Sure, football has the
country in a choke hold right now, but even
the hardest of pigskin lovers wouldn’t turn
away from a good NCAA tournament game.
Poor you if you missed this past weekend’s
games. They had everything you could look
for in a sport and everything you probably
won’t find elsewhere. But don’t worry, last
weekend was just a preview. Hopefully, you’ll
get to witness all the sights, sounds and sizzles
for another few weeks. Enjoy it while you
can; March Madness doesn’t happen often but
when it does, you have to take notice.

Former NBA player
Robert Whaley was arrested
on March 11 for hiding drugs
in his butt, the Salt Lake
Tribune reported.
According to Salt Lake
old former Utah Jazz center
was first given a minor
citation for not wearing his
seatbelt. But he made the
situation worst when he
gave police a false identity
(Kareem Johnson, one of
his former teammates at
University of Cincinnati).
Authorities soon realized he
was wanted for probation
violation in Michigan, and
then found him hiding several
baggies of marijuana “in his
buttocks.”
Whaley is no stranger
to run-ins with the police.
According to Cincinnati.
com, he avoided conviction
on charges of statutory rape
with a mistrial in 2001, and
took a plea bargain on two
aggravated battery charges
in 2003, reducing them from

City Knights Win Back-to-
Back 2A State Titles
The City College Knights
also represented Baltimore at
the winner’s podium, beating
Gwynn Park of Prince
George’s County, 56-45, in
the Class 2A state finals on
March 13.
City (23-2 overall
record) used their size
advantage over Gwynn
Park, dominating the game
in the paint. The Knights
started Jordan Latham and
Aron Nwankwo, two players
that stand at least 6-feet,8
inches tall, which kept their
opponents from scoring easy
points at the basket. As a
result, Gwynn Park (20-6
overall) finished shooting
only 29 percent from the
field.
“I wanted to put our
size out there,” City head
coach Mike Daniel told local
reporters. “We wanted to go
and work.”
The Knights have now
finished the season with an
11-game winning streak,
and also became the first
Baltimore City team to
claim back-to-back state
championships since the
Poets won four straight in
2003-06.

HIV/AIDS Rises Among Girls and Women

“You know she got AIDS.”
Vernetta Gibson hadn’t
even been tested before her
peers diagnosed her. They
assumed she was infected
because her husband died
of autoimmune deficiency
syndrome. But their judgment
was eventually proven
correct. At 27 years old,
Gibson tested positive for
human immunodeficiency
virus (HIV), the virus that
causes AIDS. It wasn’t until
her husband lay dying in a
coma that she learned of his
positive status. Now living
with full-blown AIDS, she
encourages women to get
tested regularly —every six
months — and participate in
National Women and Girls
HIV/AIDS Awareness Day
(NWGHAAD).
NWGHAAD is celebrated
to raise awareness of the
increasing impact of HIV/
AIDS on women and girls.
According to the U.S.
Department of Health and
Human Services, a woman
in the United States tests
positive for HIV every 35
minutes and one in four
Americans living with HIV
are women. Less than 15
percent of new HIV infections
in the U.S. were among
females 13 and older in the
mid 1980s, which increased
to about 27 percent by 2006.

girls about prevention, the

and how to lead a normal,

She was also on drugs
until a few years ago when
she was introduced to Women
Accepting Responsibility
(WAR), a nonprofit
organization for minority
women at risk for or living
with HIV/AIDS. Healthy
and optimistic about her
life, Gibson, 43, shares her
testimony with clients at
WAR as a nonmedical case
manager.
“I encourage them to get
tested and stay tested,” she
said. “It can lay dormant in
your blood stream from five
to 10 years.”
Women and teenage girls
accounted for over a quarter
of HIV/AIDS diagnoses in
2007 and more than 93,900
cumulative deaths from AIDS
according to a statement
by Anthony Fauci, director
of the National Institute
of Allergy and Infectious
Diseases (NIAID) at the
National Institutes of Health
(NIH). Black women in the
U.S. contract HIV/AIDS at
nearly 15 times the rate of
White women, half of the
estimated 33.4 million people
living with HIV in 2008 were
female worldwide, and HIV
was the leading cause of
disease and death for women
of childbearing age, the
statement said.
“Women and teenage
girls most often acquire HIV
through sex with an infected
male partner,” Fauci said.
“The early diagnosis and
prompt treatment of HIV
infection helps prevent the
destructive impact of the virus
on the immune system and
contribute to the prolongation
of life. In addition, a woman’s
chance of transmitting HIV
to others is lessened by
treatment of her infection.”
Black Educational AIDS
Project (BEAP) Project
Manager Sally Cherry points
out that some women contract
the virus by having sex with
men who are secretly having
sex with other men, and also
through drug abuse.
“AIDS is 100 percent
preventable,” Cherry said.
“If you have not been
exposed we want to give you
information to keep you from
being at risk. If you have it,
we want to help you stop the
spread. If you test positive,
you can get treated. It’s just
a constant education because
some people, no matter how
many times you say it, can’t
hear it enough.”
In addition to women
being up-to-date with HIV
tests, it is also important that
their partners get tested before
engaging in unprotected sex.
Unfortunately, Gibson
learned this lesson the hard
way.

Minority AIDS Council Issues Call To Action In STD Battle

A new data analysis released by the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC) shows a stark disparity in
rates of HIV and syphilis among men who have sex with men
(MSM) relative to the rest of the U.S. population. The rate of
HIV diagnoses among MSM is more than 44 times that of other
men, and more than 40 times that of women. MSM syphilis
infection rates are high as well; 46 times that of other men and
more than 71 times that of women.
Unfortunately, these disparate rates of HIV and syphilis
infection are not surprising. The AIDS community was unable
to adequately educate the public about HIV/AIDS during the
eight years of the Bush administration, which emphasized
abstinence-only approaches to health education. Research has
demonstrated that these methods do not to work, and limited
discussion of condom use in federally-funded forums. These
situations, compounded with existing social and cultural
stigmas around sexuality – and homosexuality in particular –
helped fuel the increase in HIV and syphilis incidence in the
MSM community.
To adequately address the situation, the National Minority
AIDS Council (NMAC) recommends the following:
• Realistic Funding Levels: Reducing the impact of HIV/
syphilis among MSM and stopping new infections will
require increased funding. We support the recommendation
from the CDC’s professional judgment budget, and ask
for an increase of $877 million for federal HIV/AIDS
prevention programs.
• Additional Research: The study released by the CDC
addresses MSM, as identified based on behavior – whether
a man surveyed engaged in sexual activity with another
man within a certain time period. The study shows the
need for more comprehensive research specifically on
people who identify themselves as gay, bisexual and
transgender, and needs to discern whether age, race, sexual
practices and regional variances are factors in HIV and
syphilis transmission.
• Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT)
Community Voices Needs to Be Included: As the federal
government moves forward to address HIV in the MSM
community, it is critical that the diverse voices of the
LGBT community be included. We need to be at the table
as an active partner to review the research, programs and
prioritizing of challenges.
• Everyone Needs to Prioritize Gay Men: Everyone
committed to addressing HIV/AIDS needs to prioritize gay
men. This includes LGBT organizations, elected officials,
social clubs, policymakers, businesses, social justice
agencies, businesses and the general public. This is not just
a problem impacting MSM; it is everyone’s problem.

leadership within communities of color to address challenges
of HIV/AIDS. Since 1987, NMAC has advanced this mission
through a variety of programs and services, including: a public
policy education program, national and regional training
conferences, a treatment and research program, numerous
