Subject Area: Geometry

Grade Level: 3

&

Bri&Varela&
Date: November 16th, 2013

Iowa Core Standard:

3.G.1. Understand that shapes in different categories (e.g., rhombuses, rectangles, and others)
may share attributes (e.g., having four sides), and that the shared attributes can define a larger
category (e.g., quadrilaterals). Recognize rhombuses, rectangles, and squares as examples of
quadrilaterals, and draw examples of quadrilaterals that do not belong to any of these
subcategories. https://www.educateiowa.gov/pk-12/standards-curriculum/iowacore/mathematics/grade-3/geometry
Objectives:
Content:
1. Students will be able to identify and list characteristics of squares, rhombuses, rectangles,
parallelograms, trapezoids and kites. (Remember)
2. Students will be able to categorize shapes based on their shared characteristics. (Analyze)
3. Students will be able to explain why shapes belong together in categories and name what
similar characteristics they share. (Understand)
Language:
Word level: use the term categorize when talking in small groups about shapes. Know the
definition of quadrilateral and be able to explain what it means.
Materials:
Cutouts of squares, rectangles, rhombuses, parallelograms, trapezoids and kites
Shape Charts (see attached paper)
2 fly swatters
Learning Plan:
1. Introduction: Ask students to draw the shapes from the objectives individually and hold them
up for me to see which ones that they struggle with. Explain that all of these are quadrilaterals
and that they have 4 sides, 4 vertices, and the angles add up to 360 degrees. (Comprehensible
input)
2. Sharing of objectives (written on the board): Call on a student to read aloud each objective.
Ask students if they know what categorize means. Give students an example sentence.
3. Building Background: Have students look at their cutouts and come up with a list of
characteristics of each shape in groups of 2 or 3. (Interaction) (Comprehensible input)
4. Guidance Prior to Activity: Have students share out loud their lists. Students will be filling
out their Shape Charts as I write the answers on the board. They will also put the definition of
a quadrilateral on their sheet. (Scaffolding/support for ELLs)
5. Activities:
Fly Swatter Game: Students will be broken up into 2 teams. Each team will send up one
person at a time to play. I will describe a shape and the first person to hit the correct shape
that is drawn on the board with the fly swatter gets a point. The team at the end with the
most points wins. (Checking for understanding) (Interaction) (Comprehensible input)

Small Groups: Students will then group their cutout shapes based on shared characteristics
and share in small groups why they grouped them that way. (Checking for understanding)
(Interaction)
Assessment:
To check for understanding I will read aloud a definition and the students (together) will tell
me which shape I am describing. Then I will call on a student to come draw it on the board. I
will repeat this until I get through every shape we talked about today.
Ex: A quadrilateral with four equal parallel sides and with four right angles. Answer: Square
A quiz will be given part way through the unit and a test at the end of the unit to assess the
students.
Reflection:
In planning this lesson I thought about different ways to engage students in the lesson. I
wanted as many hands on activities and discussions as I could get so that each student could
participate and get involved especially ELL students. I had a hard time at first thinking of ideas
for activities but once I thought about what I did in school that got my attention and helped me
learn it was a lot easier. I think overall my lesson is well done and very engaging. I learned
that I must include many different ways to present the material so that every student can
understand. I think that the chart that I made is also very good and was pretty easy to make.
