ANTONIO ORBE, S.I.
A ratos
Nuestras
categoras no coinciden. Se mueven en direcciones
encontradas.

SUMMARY
Patristic Theology and theological Progress
Can patristic thought enrich present-day theology - especially
the structures, forms and contents of todays dogmatics? The
author does not intend to discuss this question, even though he is
aware that the exegesis of the Church Fathers - nerve center of
primitive theology - is today often neglected and considered
useless. He assumes that the answer should be affirmative, and
he asks, on this hypothesis, which of the Church Fathers have to
be studied, what part of their writings, and by which methods?
He analyses the actual state of patristic studies, their decay
(which goes along with that of humanistic culture) and the
practical limitations they encounter. The author rejects some
superficial approaches and directs his attention towards the
adaptation of the patristic message to our time.
First of all, one has to hold fast to the strong, rigorously
dogmatic concerns. Pastoral viewpoints are ambiguous; they are
of value, if at all, as conclusions that derive spontaneously from
dogmatic premises. The same is to be said about liturgical
concerns. Passing over a thousand other possible fields of
research, one has to go straight to the genuine theologians among
the Fathers (who are few), and, more precisely, to those whose
doctrine shows more depth and has been less explored.
Byzantinism has to be avoided thongh the author be as
inspiring as St. Augustine. What is byzantine is always
byzantine.
The author, then, describes some theological trends that will
offer greater possibilities for research: the Asian, the Alexandrian
before the Council of Nicea, and the Augustinian, in order to
eliminate investigations that would prove unfruitful for dogmatic
theology.
The main problem is to discover and to restore in its richness
the lively thought that lies beneath literary formulas in the
patristic
