Glasgows name in Gaelic translates as the dear green place and the city is
home to an amazing variety of beautifully verdant parks, gardens and open
spaces that are ideal for quiet strolls, family days out and for exploring some
fascinating attractions. And if the city is well-named, it shares its natural side
with so much of the region surrounding it.
Glasgow Green is the citys oldest parkland
and can trace its history back to the mid 15th
century. As well as being a fabulous place for
a quiet stroll James Watt is said to have come
up with his ideas for improving the steam engine
while walking here it also plays host to rock
concerts, popular fairs, plus the National Hockey
Centre, one of the venues for the Glasgow
Commonwealth Games.
Kelvingrove Park in the West End is one of
the citys favourite open spaces. Sitting by the
banks of the River Kelvin and overlooked by
the University of Glasgow and Kelvingrove
Art Gallery & Museum, the park is a popular
attraction all year round.
Head out to the sprawling Pollok Country
Park, a few miles south west of the city centre.
Extensive woodlands, lots of ranger-led activities
and its own herd of impossibly cute Highland
cattle have helped it scoop the awards for both
Britains and Europes best park.
Located behind the Tramway Theatre on the south
side of the city, The Hidden Gardens are one of
the more recent additions to Glasgows green
havens. Reclaimed from its former industrial past,
the gardens are a place where you can escape the
bustle of city streets. Theres a busy programme
of events that run here throughout the year and
everyone is encouraged to join in.

including pubs, restaurants and cafs, are smokefree by law, creating a healthier and fresher
environment for residents and visitors to our
beautiful country. For further information, visit

Family Fun
There is a wealth of things to see and do that
will keep smiles on faces all day and boredom at
bay. Attractions which are particularly suitable

guide. Please note this icon is not verified by

Assistance Dogs
The new Equality Act 2010 protects anybody
who has or has had a disability and people
who experience discrimination because they
are linked or associated with a disabled person.
In respect of assistance dogs the law quite clearly
states that to refuse admission to a registered
assistance dog is now unlawful and constitutes
discrimination under the Equality Act 2012 under
three possible categories: 1: discrimination arising
from a disability; 2: indirect discrimination and
3: disability harassment. VisitScotland is
committed to equality of opportunity and is
working through its Accessible Tourism Project to
educate and inform all our customers about the
requirements under the law. We have encouraged
all our business customers to use the assistance
dog symbol in order to comply with law, or make
it clear in a statement that they welcome all
assistance dogs. It is always advisable to check
with each establishment prior to booking.
v Hearing Loop
Induction loop and infrared systems help people
with hearing loss hear more clearly by reducing
the effect of background noise. When a building
has been fitted with a loop or infrared system, you
will usually find this mentioned in their adverts,
newsletters and at the entrance to the building.
Informative signs and symbols should be displayed
such as the loop sign above, it is always worth
asking if it is not obvious. Please note this icon
is not verified by VisitScotland Quality and
Standards Department.
, Dogs Welcome
Dogs are welcome to this establishment, on the
understanding that they are on their leash and
are kept under control. You may have to check
with each establishment whether there are
restricted areas for your dog. Please note this
icon is not verified by VisitScotland Quality and
Standards Department.
