Feelings - An English Language Project

Priti, Deepanam School
March 2011

Feelings is an English- language project, which helps the students to get more aware of their feelings, while concentrating on them and
observing themselves. Students get more open and improve their ability to share feelings with friends, other students and teachers. They learn
new words, using the dictionary and improve their writing skills and also vocabulary.

Introduction
The project Feelings was created for students at the age of 8-9 years. It is planned for two regular English lessons per week, over a period of eight
weeks (= 16 classes), in a group of 12 students, one teacher and one assistant.

Method, steps of implementing the project

1. Introduction:
To introduce the project, we went to the Matrimandir Rocks for a small concentration. The students were asked to concentrate on what they feel in
silence with closed eyes. Afterwards everybody wrote one sentence about their feelings and presented it to the others, if wanted.

2. Focus- Writing: Working on four givens feelings:

The first four weeks we worked every week on one particular feeling (silence, happiness, sadness, curiosity):
- For each feeling we gave a little introduction.
- The students wrote one text about their own idea about each of the feelings.
- They wrote a minimum of one poem about one of those feelings or about
another self-chosen one.
- They also explored negative feelings (for example anger, hate, jealousy) and wrote one text about it, while working on the questions: Why do you
sometimes feel like that? How is it to have this feeling? How do you overcome this feeling? How do you feel better?
- We especially focused on improving the students writing skills, by letting them writing on their own, while learning how to use the dictionary. More
and more feelings were continuously added to improve their vocabulary( like overwhelmed, anxiousetc)

3. Focus- Creativity:
Intro: While meditating with music, every child imagined one color and was asked to observe and concentrate on whatever feeling they could
sense. Afterwards we shared our impressions.
Painting:The students got different colors to make paintings for self-chosen feelings.
We gave them one feeling and they had to chose one color for this feeling and make a painting with only this one color that include different
shades of one color.
Working with clay: Creating a symbol for one feeling.

4. Create an own booklet:

Every student created a booklet on their own, in which their texts, poetry and paintings are documented. The front page of each childs booklet is Red as
it is the color of love (childrens chosen feeling). Each student designed the front page with colorful paintings and added the project title to it.

Preparation/Material
Preparation: Create a suitable atmosphere in the classroom, maybe create for each treated feeling a different corner.
Material: Dictionary, colors, music, booklet (material to create an own individual creative booklet) and colored papers.

Process
How has it been implemented?
Documentation: Each child has his/her own idea about their feelings. They wrote about it and shared with the class.
Made the poetry using few feelings.
Used colors with soft music for drawing.

Discussion
Modifications:
- add more feelings,
- have a box with cards of feelings to introduce more words, make it possible to learn more independently,
- create a feeling- game ( e.g. everyone expresses one feeling, the others have to guess which it is)
What where the challenges in implementing this project?
For few children it was difficult to concentrate and put their feelings in the words.
What are improvements you could recommend?

It could go on for whole year adding more possibilities to the project.

Outcome and Results

This project was important because it helped developing the childrens inner confidence and made them aware of their positive and negative feelings.
They learned to understand the impact of their feelings on themselves - as the term Feelings is itself very abstract.
Tried to touch five aspects of Integral Education. Vital by doing concentration. Physical by different activities. Mental by using the dictionary for
creative writing and poetry. Spiritual and physic by music, they had the possibility to connect to their inner most being.
