Water Resources
Remote sensing based inputs have been significantly
contributing to the water resources development,
planning and management. The major areas of
applications in the field of water resource are:

Irrigation infrastructure monitoring

Snow melt runoff forecasting
Basin-level water resources assessment
Flood forecasting and inundation modelling
Glacial lake / Water bodies monitoring
GLOF studies
Irrigation performance assessment
Reservoir capacity loss assessment
River basin planning & development
Hydrologic modelling

Assessment of Irrigation Infrastructure and

Potential using CARTOSAT Data
Time stamping of progress of Irrigation
Infrastructure.
Demonstrated in 103 Irrigation projects
with Irrigation Potential target of 6.30 Mha
Application Module developed on BHUVAN
Web Portal for online monitoring.
Internalized by Central Water Commission 13 projects are being monitored.
Irrigation Canal Network as seen from Cartosat data

basins.

Seasonal (Apr-Jun) snowmelt runoff forecast was issued on

31-March and Short-term (16 day) snowmelt runoff forecasts
were issued during April , May and June.

Real-Time Flood Forecasting and Inundation Modelling

Mahanadi FF Model

- Development of Flood Early warning systems for critical flood prone areas.
- Real time implementation in collaboration with CWC and IMD.
- ALTM DEM for inundation simulation.
- Modelling Environment: HEC / MIKE 11

Hazard Assessment of
South Lhonak Glacier Lake in Sikkim Himalaya
Possible flood inundation simulation in case of
Sudden failure of the earthen dam (at 10000 m 3/s)

Inventory and Monitoring of

Glacial Lakes & Water Bodies
