The Most Important Leadership Lessons I Learnt in School
Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other, said John F
Kennedy. I find those words to be quite true. From being chosen as the vice president of the photography club along with being a part of groups for class presentations or projects, joining the netball team for the school; and being a part of the schools prefect team, I was able to gain many advantages such as knowledge, experience and learn about a lot of the important qualities a leader should have. Some of the most important and valuable leadership traits that I learned and obtained are; how to be a better listener, a team player, and the importance of time management. After I was given the responsibility to become the vice president of the photography club and when I had to participate in group class activities such as class presentations or projects, has made me realize how important being a good listener is as better listening leads to a better recollection of ideas and facts, resulting into fewer miscommunications and mistakes. Being one who listens well also helps in creating bonds with others because genuine listening generates respect between the speaker and listeners and enables a better understanding between one and another. Taking up sports, which was netball for me, had also taught me a lot about never giving up. It was an eye-opening for me, to experience both, on the winning end and losing end. I learnt that I shouldnt lose hope and give up even if I lost, and that I must try to get back on my feet and try again and encourage my teammates to do the same. Vince Lombardi once said that winners never quit, and quitters never win. Besides that, rather than trying to blame others such as the opponent team or teammates for losing, I should look at myself and realize my own mistakes. By being a part of the schools prefect team, it has helped me understand of how important it is in managing my time. As a prefect, not only do I have responsibilities to my studies, I also have my duties of the school and students discipline to be concerned with. This gave me a great opportunity to hone my time management skills. With multiple responsibilities, I was able to learn how to prioritize tasks according to their importance and plan out a schedule in order to complete them. I still have many faults, albeit having learnt a lot. To me, there are more things that I need to learn in order to be a better person and a better leader that people can look up to and follow. For instance, I still have to be more realistic and also become a better public speaker. To overcome my flaws and faults, I will have to listen to my peers and the adults, to learn from them. With that, I would be able to learn from my mistakes. [ 498 Words ]
