Progress Test 4 Writing Model Answer:
Executive summary
Introduction
The company is growing fast and, in order to expand, we need to set up a new
subsidiary in a region that offers a stable economy, skilled workers and if possible
tax incentives. We have looked at two possible regions: Arcadia and Batiku. This report
compares the two regions with regard to their local economy, labour force and
government tax incentives.
Findings
Arcadia has a stable economy. The inflation rate is low (2.4 per cent), and the exchange
rate for the local currency is strong. Batiku, however, has a weak economy with high
inflation (14 per cent and rising). The local currency has devalued by 5 per cent in the
last year.
Arcadia has a strong labour force with a high number of skilled workers.
Unemployment is only 5 per cent. Batiku has a high unemployment rate (16 per cent),
and not many of its workers are skilled.
An advantage of Batiku is that the government is offering low rates of tax to new
businesses: only 8 per cent in the first three years. In Arcadia, however, there are no tax
incentives, and the tax rate is 35 per cent for all businesses.
Conclusion
The tax incentives in Batiku are attractive, but Arcadia offers a much more stable
economy to locate a new business.
Recommendation
We should set up our new subsidiary in Arcadia.

Course in Business English at (name of institution)
Dates: from to
The course consisted of three hours of English each week. The lessons were on Monday
and Wednesday and lasted 90 minutes. There were ten people in our group, and we were
all the same level. The lessons were very lively and interesting.
We used an excellent coursebook, which had many interesting topics, for example: jobs,
companies, marketing, management and so on. We read articles about business and we
listened to interviews with real business people. This was very good for learning new
vocabulary.
PHOTOCOPIABLE 2006 Pearson Longman ELT

We did a lot of useful exercises which helped us to improve our skills, for example,
giving presentations, meetings, negotiating and socialising. I especially enjoyed the case
studies and role-plays.
This was a very useful and enjoyable course and I can recommend it to other
employees.
