Sid

No thank you, I am quite alright,

Sid would make crystal clear in his snarling,
growling retort to our advances.

Back in August, while dredging through the difficult work

of revamping the Sonsini Shelter, we were absolutely mortified by the appearance of the senior Chihuahua dumped
at our shelter. We had named him Sid after someone suggested he looked like the character from the childrens
movie Ice Age. I still swear he looked like Sids grandmother. This little dog could not walk when we met him.
His little toenails, gnarled and twisted around each other,
had grown so long they resembled something out of an old
Ripleys Believe it or Not record book. Weighing less than
two pounds, infested with fleas, and smelling like he hadnt seen the interior of a bathtub in a solid seven years, a
bath was most certainly in order. However, to suggest that
he was unhappy with our sudden interest in his well-being
would be the understatement of the century. Not only was
he uninterested in the medical attention he sorely needed,
he was also not interested in any sort of cleaning procedure we might be of the opinion he should undergo. And
just in case we were considering it, he was also not going
to be partaking in a trim of those rather unruly nails.
No thank you, I am quite alright, Sid would make crystal clear in his snarling, growling retort to our advances.
It comforted us to know that it was not only our advances that he absolutely detested. He hated us. He hated our trusted vets. Poor Dr. OMara at Allen Heights
braved the snarling, snapping Sid in the beginning to get him started on the road
to recovery. Eventually, she was able to get Sids shots done, a medical exam and
his nails trimmed despite the snarling growling little Tasmanian devil that Sid
was attempting to convince us all that he was.
We started him on a healthy diet and began to socialize him. He began to trust us.
He stopped snarling and growling. Over the next week we watched as he slowly
started to come out of his vicious, snapping little shell and gingerly began following us around the office. Slowly, he began to come to people for attention. He

loved to run and play in our outdoor play area. He was experimenting walking with us. He had learned that a human
touch was not something to fear- that he liked to have his
fur stroked. We were so impressed with how far this little
man had come and how quickly he had warmed up to us.
We were winning. Sid had been mistreated and terribly
mistreated for a very long time by the looks of his nails,
his coat and his reaction to our attentions. Despite the mistreatment and the abuse, Sid was learning to trust again.
Our hearts soared when we would see him run through the
outdoor play area. This was a dog who couldnt walk. It
had been merely a week and change and he was running
and playing. We were winning.
And then in late August, Sid suddenly had a grand mal
seizure. We were completely unprepared. He had been
gaining weight and improving. We had no expectation that
there was anything like this looming in the background
waiting to strike. Thankfully, our little man was not alone
when the seizure hit. One of our dedicated staff, Emily,
was with him in his kennel when the seizure started. Our
animal care manager, Danielle, spent hours with him
stroking his fur and comforting him afterwards. Danielle
brought him home and kept him with her until his veterinary appointment.
Danielle personally brought Sid to the vet with tears in her eyes. Despite everything we had done for him, our poor Sid would never wake up after his seizure
and had to be euthanized.
We were devastated. We are comforted by the knowledge that Sids last week was
probably his best, as we loved with all our hearts.

BHS Awarded Grant to Help

Its Low-cost Spaying/Neutering Efforts

Thanks to a $10,000 grant from the

Massachusetts Animal Coalition
(MAC), Berkshire Humane Society
(BHS) will be able to continue its efforts to provide low-cost spay/neuter
programs for cats and dogs in Berkshire
County. This year the MAC grant will
support two programs: Pittsfield Cat
Fix and Be Hip & SNIP Your Dog.
MAC is a statewide, non-profit organization comprised of animal professionals and individual volunteers
dedicated to decreasing the number of
homeless, neglected, displaced and
abused animals in Massachusetts.
Through its annual Im Animal
Friendly license plates program, it disperses funds to humane organizations
and municipal animal control agencies
in the Commonwealth to provide lowcost spay/neuter services.
Collaborating with Animal DREAMS
(AD), BHS has recently launched Pittsfield Cat Fix, a city-wide effort to
spay/neuter both owned and stray cats
in Pittsfield. AD is a local organization dedicated to caring for and improving the lives of stray or feral cats
in Berkshire County primarily through
Trap/Neuter/Return (TNR). TNR is the
only method proven to humanely and
effectively control the population of
stray or feral cat. Cats in a colony are
trapped, neutered and then returned to
their territory where caretakers provide
them with regular food and shelter.
With the help of the license plate grant,
AD and BHS have targeted 500 cats in
the 01201 zip code. For Pittsfield residents who own indoor/outdoor cats, the
cost of spaying/neutering is $30 and includes a rabies vaccination. Discounts
can be negotiated for multiple cats or
litters. There is no fee for spaying/neutering stray or feral cats. A rabies vaccination is also included. Caretakers
for these cats should contact AD to discuss arrangements.
Pittsfield Cat Fix is available for a limited time until the goal of 500 cats is
reached or May 31, 2016.
To learn more about Pittsfield Cat Fix,
please call AD at 413-997-2287 or
email them at admin@berkshireanimaldream.org.
Beginning on October 1st, BHS will
also be hosting Be Hip & SNIP Your

Pittsfield Cat Fix is available for a limited time

Dog for dog owners who live in North

County and who are in financial need.
Through this program, BHS will be
able to offer low-cost spay/neuter for
approximately 50 dogs and puppies
three months and older. To participate
in Be Hip & SNIP Your Dog, dog owners need to purchase a $25 voucher at
either the main shelter in Pittsfield or
Bark N Cat in North Adams. Once
they purchase the voucher, theyll need
to schedule an appointment with a participating veterinarian and then submit
the voucher on the day of the surgery.
Veterinarians taking part in Be Hip &
SNIP Your Dog are Greylock Animal
Hospital, North County Veterinary
Hospital, and Pittsfield Veterinary Hospital. To schedule a surgery appointment at Greylock Animal Hospital,
please call 413-663-5365 after October
1st. To schedule a surgery appointment
at North County Veterinary Hospital or
Pittsfield Veterinary Hospital, please
call 413-499-1580 after November 1st
and ask for Emily.
The $25 fee includes spaying/neutering and a rabies vaccination. Vouchers
will be available on a first come, first
serve basis and be limited to two per
family. Additionally, the wait list for a
surgery appointment may be two
months or longer. There will be no refunds. For more information, please
call the BHS kennel staff at 413-4477878, ext. 126.

Since our inception, Berkshire Humane Society has been committed to

providing low-cost spaying and neutering to families who cannot afford this
important surgery, explains John Perreault, Executive Director of BHS.
Over the years, weve spayed or
neutered almost 5,000 dogs and cats
through our community outreach programs and significantly reduced the
homeless pet population. Were very
grateful to the Massachusetts Animal
Coalition, Animal DREAMS, our participating veterinarians, and Christa
Abel of Bark N Cat for partnering with
us for Pittsfield Cat Fix and Be Hip &
SNIP Your Dog.
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) re-

ports that about 7.6 million animals are

surrendered to shelters nationwide each
year; sadly, 2.7 million of them are euthanized annually. Spaying and neutering is one of the most efficient and
humane ways to decrease these numbers.
Besides reducing the homeless pet
population, spaying and neutering has
many other benefits, including health,
behavior, and cost. According to the
ASPCA, spaying female cats or dogs
before their first heat cycle reduces
their chances of uterine infections and
breast cancer; neutering male cats or
dogs before they are six months old decreases their risk of testicular cancer.
Males who are neutered dont roam in
search of a mate, and dogs are more apt
to focus on their family members, making their training easier. Finally, the
cost of spaying and neutering is less
than the cost of raising a litter of kittens
and puppies.
To help support the effort to end pet
overpopulation and homelessness in
Massachusetts through low-cost spaying/neutering, BHS encourages all
community members to purchase an
"I'm Animal Friendly" license plate.
The tax-deductible plates are available
at local Registries of Motor Vehicles or
at www.petplate.org

myth &truth about dog behavior

Ive trained my dog to do all his basic skills and even some tricks. He does everything great at home and doesnt even need food treats for most things. But every
time I take him somewhere else he ignores me and wont do any of the skills I
know he knows. Is he just being stubborn?

Most likely he is not being stubborn but 2 things are definitely getting in the way
of his ability to respond as he does at home. First, dogs do not generalize information the same way we humans do. They see their experiences as a picture and
everything in the picture matters. If you change the picture (go somewhere new)
the dog is a bit confused. So when you are first training your dog to do new skills
it is very important to help him generalize the information by training in many different locations. By changing the picture for him, he learns that the constant is the
skill you are asking for and then he can begin to generalize to future new situations. Since you have only taught your dog at home, he hasnt had that opportunity to learn the commands fully in new locations. Your second problem is
distraction. Skills need to strengthened by slowly and purposefully adding in distractions of all kinds. When a new distraction is added it should be at a low enough
intensity that your dog can still remain focused on you. If he can't respond to you,
you have turned up the volume too quickly and need to slow the process so
your dog can regain his focus and ability to listen to you. So Id recommend you
start by practicing those basic skills in several new places and very gradually introduce more distraction and you will begin to see that your dog is as eager to respond to you anywhere as he is at home.

Changes

Over the last few months, the Eleanor Sonsini Animal Shelter has undergone
a "facelift," with the help of the local business community, the shelter's board
of directors, staff and volunteers. The shelter was transformed from a shabby
garage into a clean, cozy, welcoming home for the homeless animals of
Berkshire County.

It was exhausting, but fun and so

worth it!" said Shelter manager Tobie
Petkus. "I am hooked on those HGTV
renovation shows. Once you start renovating one thing, it snowballs into the
next.
It began with the fixing the outdoor
kennel fencing which was severely
damaged by the winter snow. Todd
Storti of New England Fence graciously agreed to donate his labor costs
to repair all 16 kennels. The shelter obtained a grant to pay for the materials.
"Once they were finished and looked so
nice, we realized the indoor kennels
needed TLC. East Coast Refinishing
stepped up to the plate and agreed to
prepare the indoor kennels so that Berkshire Custom Coating could powder
coat them. They look nearly new," said
Petkus.
Berkshire Fabric and Wallpaper offered expert advice on the interior color
scheme. The staff and volunteers received assistance from the Berkshire
County House of Correction to repaint
the interior. "They did a fabulous job!"
exclaimed Krista Wroldson Miller, who
is chair of the shelter's board. Martha
Pope of Shaggy Dog Photography's
soulful portraits of the shelter animals
adorn the walls.

Thank You!

Probably the largest undertaking, other

than the fencing was that of refinishing
the porous cement floors. John Massery
and Jeff Blazick of Elite Crete New
England transformed the old floors with
special epoxy. The new floors are impervious and much easier to keep clean.
While the new floors were setting up,
neither animals nor staff could walk on
them. Petkus said" Luckily, the weather
was beautiful so Krista and I slept here
on her husband Rick's boat for several
nights. The dogs loved the company
and we had fun! We were prepared for
bad weather as well, Trevor Hotchkin
and his crew at Classical Tents erected
a large canopy spanning several kennels
which protects against rain, sun and
wind. The Berkshire County Association of Realtors donated some funds so
that another canopy can be purchased
to cover some more of the kennels."
In the midst of the renovations, the
company truck , dishwasher, washer
AND dryer died.
Three of these appliances died the
same day! Central Radio donated a
dishwasher and gave a great price on a
new washer, Judith Trumble, another
board member, donated a dryer. International Automotive Parts, Turner Auto
and City Tire got the truck back on the

road. Ernie Weider of Weider Mechanical helped us to move appliances

around, Aaron Roche worked on enclosing the dishwasher. The list goes
on.
Outdoors, Rick Miller fenced in a
large area to be used for agility. Ron
Petkus of Stockbridge Stone and Ray
Roberts helped bring in gravel and dirt
to even out the outdoor kennels. "
Adam Stevens, an Eagle Scout and
some of his friends worked on adapting
the shed into a chicken coop with the
hope that some chickens will reduce the
ticks.
On September 30th, after all of the
work was complete, the shelter held an
Open House for businesses and officials
to view the changes. Mayor Bianchi
was suitably impressed. He hadn't been
in the building in several years and was
delighted with the changes. His opponant Linda Tyer was equally impressed
as she toured the facility and grounds.
Past volunteers who hadn't been in the
building for years were astonished at
the transformation.
"We are so very grateful to each and
every one of the people who supported
us in this journey." Petkus said. "It is
my hope that those who read this article, or see the improvements will call

Animal Life

these businesses when they need work

done. They took time out of their busy
schedules to help us and that means the
world to these animals."
The shelter would also like to thank
the following for their help; The City of
Pittsfield, Berkshire House Hunters,
Canine Connection, Josh Capitanio,
B'J's Warehouse, Antonio Castagna,

Rescue Dog
Fight Cancer!

Brutus is a kind and loving 11 year-old Basset Hound

that was rescued by New England Basset Hound Rescue. He spent his first eight years tied to a tree with no
medical care and little food. I saw him online and instantly fell in love with him. He was blind from an untreated eye infection and his eyes were white and sunken
in. Without question, I adopted him! After my husband
and I built him a ramp with rails to get out the back door,
we took him home where he instantly became a part of
our family.
Taking Brutus in, I was inspired to volunteer for the
New England Basset Hound Rescue as the Adoption Coordinator and help these beautiful animals find their forever homes.
In the meantime, Brutus had to have his eyes removed
due to pressure from his previous infection. He adjusted
well to the surgery and has been happy since. Three
months ago, he had to have
his spleen taken out due to
swelling and imminent rupture. My husband and I did
not hesitate to pay the
$2,500 to have the surgery
performed. Brutus then
made a full recovery. Unfortunately, three weeks
later, he was diagnosed
with Stage 3A Lymphoma.
According to the Oncologist, our boy is a great can-

day care & supplies

didate for treatment and they're optimistic that it will put

him into remission for one to two and a half years. There
is even a 5% cure rate! Of course we are fighting this
and are not ready to lose Brutus!
Brutus will be undergoing nineteen treatments that will
cost us around $6,000 by the time we are done. We have
taken on multiple jobs to ensure that Brutus' spleen surgery was paid for and that he will receive his chemo
treatments moving forward. I am in love with this sweet
boy and am not ready to part with him, as he has plenty
of life left. My husband and I are asking for any little bit
of help toward this life-saving effort and thank you for
taking time to read Brutus' story.

Amanda Jones began her photography career in 1992 after

graduating with a degree in Cinema and Photography from
Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY. In 1994, Amanda began photographing dogs in Maine after her best friend brought home
Ruby, a yellow Labrador Retriever puppy. Ruby was Amanda's
first model and inspiration for pursuing a career working with
dogs. Amanda has been photographing dogs and cats for clients
across the United States ever since.
Amanda's images grace greeting cards, posters, calendars and
books. She travels the country extensively, photographing dogs,
cats, and the occasional horse.
Amanda lives in Williamstown, Massachusetts with her husband and business partner, Chris, their daughter Sophie, and
her two Dachshunds Lily & Benny.
Amanda Jones, Inc. is headquartered on the campus of the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art in North Adams,
Massachusetts. We have a beautiful 1800 square foot space in
a building that used to house one of the area's largest employersSprague Electric. The factory closed down in 1985 and
sat idle for many years. In 1998, the 13 acre compound was
transformed into one of the largest museums of Contemporary
Art in the world.

My name is Corinne McKeown. I have long been attracted to

shiny objects and I seem to naturally hone in on them from a
distance. Lets just say that if you were a piece of jewelry on
the sidewalk or a coin on the ground there isnt a chance I
wont spot you and claim you! Ive been gathering supplies
and hording found objects forEVER.
It wasnt until 2012 that knew I would explode if I did not
begin to learn this special brand of art. Id watch videos endlessly on YouTube. I collected more supplies, and began to research Instructors as close to the Berkshires as possible. To
learn, I have traveled an hour and a half, minimally, each way
two times in a weekend (well worth the trip Cindy Fischer,
Big Bang Mosaics); and have hired an Instructor to come to
my home from out of state to give me private tutelage (Thank
you Debora Aldo, Pietre Dure Design!). Im hugely grateful
for teacher Sharra Frank for her online courses at SharrasMosaicSecrets.
I feel like a girl in love. It has taken me 52 years to become

cats, goats, pigs and other menagerie have been featured in
many venues but there are a few Im most proud of. I was featured in a local PBS show called Making It Here".
My portraits made a page, front and center, in Country Living
Magazine Ive always loved that magazine!
My portrait of Margaret, Queen of Dachshund was the featured image in an exhibit called Reigning Cats and Dogs at
the Museum of Fine Arts in Springfield, MA; In that magnificent building, my paintings were in the company some of the
most fabulous examples of historical pet art in the world.
Several of my portraits are now on wine labels. One of the labels were listed in Rachael Rays magazines as an LOL Wine
Label something youd buy not because you love the wine
but because the label makes you laugh. And of all things, I like
the idea that my art makes people happy.

My first camera was an old Pentax 35mm that my grandfather

gave to me when I went off to college in Upstate New York. I
loved taking photos of the woods and water back then and I
still do today. I was very fortunate to be able to work at the
Winter Olympics in Lake Placid where I took lots of images of
the US hockey team and the village. Sadly, I no longer have
these photos due to a house fire. But me enthusiasm for photography is still with me. I enjoy expanding my knowledge of
the craft by taking classes with different photographers whenever possible. With the advent of digital cameras, I am able to
catalogue my photos for any and all uses including internet
sales and my increasing presence in art exhibits like the one at
The Audubon Society at Pleasant Valley Sanctuary, Oct. 11th ,
12th , 18th , 19th & 24th from 10am-4pm with a closing reception on Saturday Oct 24th from 6-8pm
My subject matter continues to be the nature and wildlife all
around me each and every day. I have called a healthy and active cattail marsh on Shaw Pond in Becket, MA my home for
almost 30 years now. I am the caregiver for a menagerie of
rescued pets including 2 llamas, 9 chickens, 5 cats a dog and
my husband Mark.

I was born on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, and feel very fortunate to have grown up in NYC. I worked as a graphic designer for many years. My husband and I wrote, designed and art directed the childrens book series, The Adventures of Taxi Dog,
about a homeless dog in NYC who gets adopted by a cab driver.
I combined my love of animals and art into creating portraits on stone, which has become my passion. I am always searching for
just the right stone to fit the shape of the animal. I often lose track of the hours I spend on each rock because I try to paint the
animals likeness as well as its soul, which is reflected in the eyes. A pet is an important member of the family, and some of my
commissions are for animals that have departed. As I paint them, I seem to connect to their spirits and feel them come through
to mehard to explain!
I paint with acrylics and finish with a protective glaze. I thoroughly love what I do and consider myself extremely fortunate to
be able to bring some happiness into pet owners lives when I see tears of joy, I know Ive succeeded. In addition to cats and
dogs, Ive painted everything from birds, ferrets and guinea pigs to horses and various wild animals.
I currently live in Seymour, CT with my husband, Sal, daughter Samantha and three wonderful cats. Please check out my website at barrockas.com or find me on Facebook.

Purradise Feline Adoption Center and Riverbrook Residence:

Founded in 1957 and located in Stockbridge, MA, Riverbrook Residence is

the oldest day and residential program
for women with developmental disabilities in the Northeast. A core component of its mission is to provide
opportunities to its residents among
them being job training, meaningful
employment, and community involvement.
With the help of a recent grant from
the Berkshire Life Charitable Foundation, a collaboration between Riverbrook and Purradise Feline Adoption
Center will provide exactly those opportunities for a group of residents who
love and care about cats: a stipend and
a training program that will teach them
a range of skills and knowledge necessary for employment in a variety of animal-related or other jobs.
In 2014, a small group of Riverbrook
women, accompanied by a work site instructor, began volunteering to socialize cats at Berkshire Humane Societys
(BHS) satellite adoption center in Great
Barrington. According to Danielle
Hammell, shelter manager and their supervisor, the womens weekly visits to
Purradise were helpful not only for the
cats who had difficulty adjusting to
shelter life but also for the staff who did
not always have time to provide that
extra TLC to the cats.
Purradise benefited so much by having the ladies of Riverbrook come
every week, she says. They did an
amazing job with the cats.
Given the success of the volunteer visits, the next step a more structured job
training program for the women

A True Collaboration

seemed logical, especially given Riverbrooks mission and BHSs commitment to community outreach. As
Danielle explains, although the women
will continue to have their cat time,
the curriculum that she designed for this
program largely includes hands on
learning as well as discussion on a
range of animal care and welfare topics. Recently, for example, she focused
on sanitation with an emphasis on
cross-contamination as well as appropriate measurement and use of cleaning
products. Future topics will be devoted
to cat behavior, nutrition, and grooming.
Jessica and Katie, who were the first
volunteers at Purradise, are now among
the first participants in the training program. Describing all of them as devoted and hardworking, Danielle notes
theyve already made a huge contribution to Purradise by, for example, helping to clean cages and crates, do
laundry, and keep the cats health and
well-being a top priority. Equally important, the women are continuing to
enjoy their time at the shelter. This
place makes my day, says Jessica,
while Katie adds, We love coming to
Purradise and playing with the cats!
Created in 2001, the Berkshire Life
Charitable Foundation is committed to
supporting local programs, services,
and special initiatives that help residents of Berkshire County with physical and developmental disabilities.
Through this grant, the Berkshire Life
Charitable Foundation has empowered
the Riverbrook ladies who have been
volunteering their time at Purradise to

a true collaboration in every
sense of the word.
Besides providing job training
and potential careers to the
women, Colleen believes that
the collaboration will benefit
other residents of Berkshire
County with special needs in
that members of the community
will see the skills and dedication of the
women who are working at Purradise.
Essentially, the Riverbrook women will

Outside
Cats

Its harder to be a cat than a dog, when it comes to laws requiring people
to take responsibility for their pets. Dogs need to be licensed, and theres a
limit to how many dogs a person can have. When a dog is found roaming,
Animal Control Officers take them off the streets, and they are held at a
facility or shelter until owners are found. If the owners arent found, there
are people who do their best to find the dog a new home.
There is no such system for cats. As a result, irresponsible pet owners can
have too many cats, allow unfixed cats outside, and some cat owners leave
them behind when they move if its inconvenient to take them. Pet cats who
are new to the idea of an outdoor life find themselves bewildered, wondering where their next meal will come from and what place they should
now call home. Friendly cats, added to the feral cats that live in many communities, amount to a population that is hard to ignore.
As bad as all this sounds, the good news is that there are kind animallovers who feel compelled to help community cats. Winter is coming,
and this is the time when caring people worry the most about the cats welfare and wonder how to best help them.

Here are some tips

If youre concerned about a friendly cat, first see if you can find out if someone owns
it. You can ask around the neighborhood, or you can buy an inexpensive breakaway
collar, wrap masking tape around it, and write call _____ if you own this cat. Some
owned indoor-outdoor cats have a roaming radius of several blocks. If you have been
caring for an owned cat, you can rest easier that they have a place to go for food and
shelter.
c
If youre concerned about a friendly cat that is not owned, you may want to check to see
if theres room at a local shelter. Berkshire Humane Societys number is 413-448-9800,
and Sonsini Animal Shelters number is 413-448-9800. But be prepared to hear that
there is no room at the shelters. There are cats all over the Berkshires in this same situation, and there are not enough available spaces at the shelter for them, especially at
this time of year. But you can usually put cats on their waiting list. If you get a friendly
stray cat on a waiting list, you can care for it, even if its outside, until there is room at
the shelter.
c
You can try to find someone to adopt friendly un-owned cat. Before giving the cat to
anyone who wants it, have a discussion with them. Does this person have other pets and
will the cat be safe from them? Do they already have too many pets? Can the person afford to feed and care for the cat? Do they have a stable housing situation, or will the cat

end up on a different street later? Though it may seem that a cat is better off in any
home than on the street, this isnt necessarily the case.
c
If the cat is not friendly, it is not in the cats best interest to go to a shelter or be found
a home. They prefer to live away from humans. Shelters cant find homes for cats that
dont like humans, and most people are not prepared to take in a pet that is always
hiding from them.
c
If a cat has picked your area to hang around, it is possible to care for them outside,
even through the winter. Their basic needs, food and shelter, can be provided even if you
cant bring the cat inside the house. There are lots of tips at this website about caring
for cats outside: http://www.alleycat.org/. Animal DREAMS can offer advice and ideas
too. There are many cat caretakers in the Berkshires who do a great job of seeing outdoor cats through the winter, year after year.
c
Last but not least, if you are helping an un-owned cat that has not been fixed, find a way
to get it spayed or neutered. If you live in Pittsfield, you can get un-owned cats fixed for
free through Animal DREAMS between now and June (or until we reach our goal of
500 cats) thanks to a grant from PetSmart Charities. Call Animal DREAMS at 413997-2287 if you live in Pittsfield. If you live elsewhere in Berkshire County, Berkshire
Humane Society has a CatSnip program, which costs $50. Their number is 413-447-7878.

this side of purradise

In my last column, I described a number of kittens then at Purradise. Most

have since been adopted (when I
stopped by on September 30, for instance, Anderson and his mom were
both no longer there)...to be replaced by
still more kittens!
Although its likely that most of the
current group will have left Purradise
by the time the present article is published, this highlights a continuing
topic: no, not just that kittens are so
darn cute, but that they are so plentifulthis new generation unilaterally
tagged as strays. As the cold weather
kicks in, it becomes that much more urgent to make sure that all these kittens
find a good home: one that will keep
them indoors, safely away from predators and the elements.
Perhaps none of the current crop more
illustrated that need for protection than
the triplets Catalina, Natasha, and
Lavender, sharing the Sunshine Spa
with a few unrelated kittens. Barely
more than two months old, the sisters
were all of delicate build, with very
short fur, huge ears, and a triangular
face, all suggesting that they had
Siamese ancestry. Muted tortie Lavender, the tiniest of the three, cheerfully
accepted being placed on my lap,
where she enjoyed stroking the velvety
texture of my coat, so matching hers.
Catalina, nearly identical but a trifle
sturdier, preferred for a time to snuggle
into a cat tree, but later joined me after
her sister departed my lap to explore
the sun porch. As for Natasha, more

than her muted tortie sisters, she was so
shy that I didnt even see her until one
of the staffers pointed her out in the
rooms hanging mesh bunk beds (where
equally shy tabby Eric, now 6 months
old, perched in the uppermost tier).
Snuggled atop a nearby cat tree (which
actually resembles a tree) was yet another kitten, the aptly named Caterpillar
for fuzzy ginger fur. She smiled (yes,
cats do smile) when a volunteer stepped
over to stroke her, but chose to snooze
instead of engage with any of the other
kittens or me. And then there was playful, curious Spike, a strikingly marked
black-and-white, polydactyl fourmonth-old Id first met on my previous
visit, when at that time hed shared his
condo with four siblings. Still more kittens were housed away from this group
in a condo in the main room of the shelter.
Mealtime, toward the end of my visit,
brought a change in the dynamics of the
porch population: Caterpillar, not budging from her tree, was given a dish right
there; a few of the others scattered to
enjoy their respective meal in privacy.
But it was delightful to see four of the

the floor, as if nursing together at some
large, invisible mother cat.
As cute as everyone was, this convergence of several litters underscores not
only the need for rescue but for kitty
birth control, to forestall the less happy
ending of feral cats not surviving in the
wild, be that in towns or rural areas.

Pili

I came to the shelter when my owner was experiencing landlord issues. I am mostly house trained. I may have an occasional accident.
I can be initially shy, but warm up quickly. I am active and energetic.
I like going for walks and running around a fenced yard with my people. I have been an only pet and unsure how I feel about other animals. I would do best in a home with older children or an adult
household. I ride well in the car, I sit on the seat. I am fluent in Spanish. Habla Espaol? Please call or stop by to see if we could be a perfect match.

time on the couch, chair or bed it's a dream day. I know a few
commands and I may be pursued to perform them. I can be
vocal when there is alot of activity. I would love to meet my
