More than 5,000 D.C.-area residents were expected to participate in WhitmanWalker Healths annual Walk to End HIV, which was scheduled to kick o Saturday
morning, Oct. 24, at Freedom Plaza in downtown D.C.
Former child star Danny Pintauro, best known for his eight-year role as the
beloved Jonathan Bower in the 1980s ABC hit sitcom, Whos The Boss? was
scheduled to greet participants of the walk along with womens human rights
and reproductive justice advocate Dazon Dixon Diallo.
Both are to receive Whitman-Walkers Courage Award, the organizations most
prominent annual award, at a ceremony at Freedom Plaza prior to the kick-o of
the walk and a 5K Run to End HIV.
Pintauro attracted national media attention in September when he disclosed
in an interview with Oprah Winfrey that he was diagnosed as HIV positive 12
years ago and that he believes he became infected through oral sex at a time
when he was addicted to crystal meth.
Dazon and Danny have been superheroes in the ght against HIV in very
distinct ways, and we are proud to present them with the Courage Award at the
Walk this year, said Whitman-Walker executive director Don Blanchon.

LGBT activists were startled to learn earlier this week that Prince Georges County
police on Oct. 16 charged veteran transgender activist Gigi Thomas with rst-degree
murder for allegedly stabbing to death a 47-year-old man inside her residence in
Temple Hills, Md.
A police statement of probable cause led in court says police were called to the address
of 5712 Linda Lane in Temple Hills, where Thomas lived, about 7:50 p.m. on Thursday,
Oct. 16. Upon arrival they found Devale Lamont Avery of Fort Washington suering from
multiple stab wounds to the upper body, the statement says. It says Avery was pronounced
dead at the scene by emergency reghters who also responded to the scene.
Primarily, it appears an argument between the suspect and victim escalated into the
fatal stabbing, a separate police statement says. Thomas is facing a charge of rstdegree murder and is being held on a no bond status at the Department of Corrections,
the statement says.
The statement of probable cause says that after being transported to a police facility
for questioning Thomas waived her Miranda rights and admitted involvement in the
murder of Devale Lamont Avery.
A posting on the social media website ZoomInfo.com in 2008 says Thomas was
pursuing a masters degree in social work at the University of the District of Columbia
while working as a client advocate for the D.C. group Helping Individual Prostitutes
Survive (HIPS). The posting says Thomas had served in that capacity at HIPS for the
previous six years and was considered an expert on the subject of sex work and violence.
It says she also served on the board of directors for the D.C.-based group Transgender
Health Empowerment (THE).
In 2007 Thomas was among the honorees receiving the Capital Trans Pride
committees Engendered Spirit Award for her contributions to the trans community.
Budd told the Blade she was shocked to learn that Thomas had been arrested on a
murder charge, saying Thomas worked most recently as a mental health case manager
at a psychiatric facility on Bladensburg Road, N.E.
She is one of the highly recognized transgender women of D.C, Budd said.

Pro-LGBT Trudeau
triumphs in Canada
Canadian LGBT rights advocates on Monday welcomed Justin Trudeaus
unexpected defeat of long-time Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reports that Trudeaus Liberal Party
won 54 percent of the seats in the Canadian Parliament, compared with the 29
percent that Harpers Conservative Party retained.
I want to say this to this countrys friends around the world: Many of you
have worried that Canada has lost its compassionate and constructive voice in
the world over the past 10 years, Trudeau told his supporters in Ottawa after
the election results, according to the Associated Press. Well, I have a simple
message for you on behalf of 35 million Canadians. Were back.
Trudeau, who is the son of the late Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, is the rst
Canadian prime minister to have marched in a Pride parade.
The younger Trudeau during the campaign pledged to end the countrys ban
on gay blood and organ donors that Harper expanded. The prime ministerelect also said he would support eorts to add gender identity to the Canadian
Human Rights Act and the countrys hate crimes law.
He made his positions pretty clear, Kim Vance, executive director of ARC
International, a global LGBT advocacy group, told the Washington Blade during a
telephone interview from Nova Scotia. The fear of the rollback of rights is gone now.
Vance said Harpers party during the campaign tried to create fear and divide
us along many lines.
Clearly Trudeaus message was to unite and move us forward and reestablish
Canadas reputation that respects human rights and advance a human rights
agenda, said Vance.
The Canadian Parliament will have six openly LGBT members as a result of
Mondays elections.
Liberal Party MPs Scott Brison of Nova Scotia and Rob Oliphant of Ontario and
New Democratic Party MP Randall Garrison of British Columbia won re-election
in their respective races. Randy Boissonnault of Alberta and Seamus ORegan
of Newfoundland and Sheri Benson of Saskatchewan, who are members of
the Liberal and New Democratic Parties respectively, also gained seats in the
Canadian Parliament.
Daily Xtra, a Canadian LGBT newspaper, reported that Boissonault and
Benson are the rst openly gay MPs to represent their respective provinces
in the Canadian Parliament. The publication said Benson will be the only out
lesbian parliamentarian in Ottawa.
MICHAEL K. LAVERS
The Polish monsignor in 2003 began working for the Congregation for the Doctrine
of the Faith, which implements church teachings on homosexuality and other issues.
Charamsa in 2011 became the second secretary of the International Theological
Commission that prepares studies for the doctrinal body.
Charamsa and his boyfriend Eduard, who is from the Catalonia region of Spain, had
planned to hold an Oct. 3 press conference outside the Congregation for the Doctrine
of the Faith in Rome. The two men moved the event to a restaurant after the Vatican
removed him from the post.
For me Eduard was a gift from God, Charamsa told the Blade.
Charamsa, 43, became a priest in 1997. He began working at the Congregation for the
Doctrine of the Faith six years later.
Cardinal Angelo Amato in 2007 as the then-secretary of the Congregation for the
Doctrine of the Faith described marriage rights for same-sex couples as evil. The
doctrinal body in a letter more than two decades earlier said homosexuality must be
seen as an objective disorder.
Pope Benedict XVI, known colloquially as Gods Rottweiler as head of the
Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith from 1981-2005, said before he became pope
that those who practice homosexuality, present deep-seated homosexual tendencies
or support the so-called gay culture cannot become priests.
The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith last month said transgender people
are unable become godparents. A Chilean newspaper on Sept. 9 published emails
between two cardinals that showed they conspired to prevent a gay man from being
named to a sex abuse commission that Pope Francis created.
Catholic bishops on Oct. 4 began their three-week gathering during which they will
vote on a document that specically addresses the family. LGBT advocates and their
allies have criticized the Vatican over leaked drafts of the documents that reiterate its
opposition to unions between gays and lesbians.
I suered for what the church taught about persons like me, Charamsa told the
Blade. It oended my dignity and kept no fundamentals in the reality, which I can
know from my experiences, from my sentiments, my desire to love, my capacity for
relationships with others.
Charamsa told the Blade he took particular issue with a 2005 edict against gay priests.
It was a real oense to me, he said. I am a good priest with my homosexual
sensibility, with my homosexual outreach, with my homosexual capacity to sacrice me
to other people.
We have horrible language of hate, language of violence, stigmatization,
marginalization, discrimination of homosexual people, added Charamsa. We judge in
the congregation.
Charamsa was teaching theology at Gregorian University and the Pontical
Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum in Rome when he came out.
The Vatican in its announcement that revealed Charamsas termination from the
Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith said he could no longer teach at papal
institutions.
The decision to make such a pointed statement on the eve of the opening of the synod
appears very serious and irresponsible, since it aims to subject the synod assembly to
undue media pressure, said Rev. Federico Lombardi, the Vatican spokesperson, in a
statement to CBS News.
Charamsa described the church as irresponsible when the Blade asked him about
Lombardis comments. The gay monsignor also criticized Bishop Ryszard Kasyna of the
Diocese of Pelplin in Poland over his decision to suspend him from his duties as a priest.
This is in my conscience, this is in my relation with God and also with the church,
Charamsa told the Blade. It was very responsible. The church is irresponsible.
LGBT Catholics and their supporters have welcomed the Vaticans more moderate
tone on homosexuality, marriage rights for same-sex couples and other issues since
Francis became pope in 2013, including his comments that gay men and lesbians should
not be judged or marginalized.
Church teachings on homosexuality and other issues have not changed.
Charamsa noted to the Blade that Francis, the former archbishop of Buenos Aires
who was then known as Jorge Bergoglio, in 2010 described marriage rights for same-sex
couples in Argentina as demonic.
When the pope asks who am I to judge...he must cancel this instruction to be tolerant,
said Francis, referring to church teachings. It is only cosmetic in the church for the media,
for journalists, for people who hear these words and say oh this is a great man who is
very open. But no, in the church we have the persecution of homosexual persons.
Charamsa repeatedly stressed to the Blade that he is a good priest, even though he
has come out as gay and acknowledged he is in a relationship with another man. The
Polish monsignor said he plans to advocate on behalf of LGBT Catholics.
Its my dream, said Charamsa. I began to study these questions, these problems
a few years ago. Of course it was my private study and nobody knew that and I didnt
publish anything because it was impossible to say something. Yes, yes, my dream is to
do something a little to repair, to correct these years of silence.

Antiretroviral therapy (ART) keeps the amount of HIV virus in the bloodstream low for
many people with HIV. However, ARTs must be taken daily, and some people develop
resistance or permanent side effects to ARTs. To address the need for alternative
treatment options, researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) are conducting a
clinical research study evaluating an investigational medication that may be an alternative
to ART. Participants will be required to stop taking their ARTs during the study.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. California prison ocials are setting the rst standards for
which transgender inmates should receive state-funded sex-reassignment surgery after
spending years in court ghting to block the operations, the Associated Press reports.
In a policy that took eect Tuesday and was reviewed by the Associated Press, prison
mental health professionals would refer the inmates for the surgery. To qualify for the
surgery, inmates must be diagnosed with what is formally known as gender dysphoria;
have expressed a desire for sex-reassignment surgery for at least two years; and have
lived as a member of the preferred gender for at least 12 months, the AP reports.
The announcement comes after California became the rst state to agree to pay for
one inmates surgery and refused to provide the surgery to a second inmate who has
since been paroled, the AP article notes.
The guidelines are believed to be the rst in the nation by a prison system, according
to Joyce Hayhoe, a spokeswoman for the federal court-appointed ocial who controls
Californias prison medical care. They were developed in cooperation with the California
Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, which oversees inmates mental health
care.
We understood there needed to be some uniform protocols in place that focused on
the need for surgery when it was medically necessary, when there werent any alternatives
that were feasible, she said according to the Associated Press article. The standards are
similar to those used by medical providers outside the prison system, she said.
The eight-page document calls for inmates who request the surgery and meet the
basic criteria to be referred for evaluation to a committee of two medical doctors, two
psychiatrists and two psychologists, which would make a recommendation to another
higher-level committee of medical professionals, the AP article notes.
The policy prohibits procedures which are considered merely cosmetic, including hair
removal, face lifts, breast augmentations or other implants, which Hayhoe said will help
hold down the cost to taxpayers. She previously estimated the cost could near $100,000,
though the Transgender Law Center in Oakland, which has represented several inmates,
told the AP that gure is exaggerated.

VIEWPOINT
likes to get things done, Sanders declares that he needs a revolution. Is that a
slogan or an epitaph?
The signs are not good. Some of Bernies revolutionaries were upset with
his statement that their hero Edward
Snowden should pay a penalty for violating the Espionage Act, though Sanders acknowledged that Snowdens revelations about NSA domestic surveillance
played a very important role in educating
the American public. Clinton, meanwhile,
was less sympathetic, saying somewhat
disingenuously that Snowden could have
been a whistle-blower. (She also refused
to regret voting for the Patriot Act.)
Here we see the lefts disconnect from
reality. You cannot invoke the rule of law
when Kim Davis dees federal court rulings
on marriage equality, only to dismiss it in
another case because you agree with the
lawbreaker. Refusing to distinguish what
should be from what is, the left impairs its
inuence over what can be changed.
Sanders showed his own progress
when he said Black Lives Matter and
spoke the name of Sandra Bland, a black
woman who died in police custody. And
he admirably donated a $2,700 contribution from prescription drug proteer
Martin Shkreli to D.C.s Whitman-Walker
Health. But he upset some supporters
when he helped Clinton by saying, The
American people are sick and tired of
hearing about your damn emails. She
thanked him, and the crowd cheered.
But the media are not sick of the emails,
nor will the Republicans on the Benghazi
Committee be, even if their questions at
the Oct. 22 hearing are delivered from
under brown paper bags.
Meanwhile, Vice President Bidens dithering over whether to run was overtaken
by Clintons strong showing. Its hard not
to sympathize; imagine watching someone
who was three spots behind you in the order of succession jump the line. He was still
considering a run as of this writing, but as
Farai Chideya at FiveThirtyEight said, Its
awfully hard to ride in to save the day when
the day doesnt seem to need saving.
Dont get me wrong: Biden and Sanders
are ne men. If Hillary has another case
of what the Republicans call Benghazi Flu,
either of them would make a ne choice
to prevent what would surely be a highly
entertaining Trump or Cruz presidency.
But were getting ahead of ourselves.
We havent even gotten to the rst caucus
or primary. Eight years ago at this point,
Barack Obama was just a junior senator
from Illinois who was not widely perceived as a threat to Clinton; the Birther
lunacy had not yet exploded.
Anything could happen. For example,
during the South Carolina primary, every
black person in the state could be pulling
down Confederate statues and forget to
vote, and the Clinton juggernaut would
come to a halt. A ery socialist might turn
out to be just what the voters wanted.
Alas for Sanders, Clintons post-debate
bump suggests that, barring a calamity,
she will lock up the nomination by early
spring. Sanders has inuenced the campaign with his laser focus on economic
inequality, but has done little to broaden
his appeal suciently to pose a serious
threat to Clinton. Playing games with online polls will not change that.

Vice President Joseph Biden, delivering the keynote address at the Human Rights Campaigns national dinner earlier this month,
touted the signicance of the court ruling on marriage, but also turned toward other issues relevant to the LGBT community.
The great arc of justice is the journey of this nation, and it continues to move in the right direction, Biden said. Were moving closer and
closer to the animating spirit of America because of all of you, not me, because of all of you.
Although hes previously articulated support for comprehensive legislation prohibiting anti-LGBT discrimination, Biden took the
opportunity of his speech to explicitly endorse the Equality Act, which would amend the Civil Rights Act and the Fair Housing Act to
include sexual orientation and gender identity.
I strongly support the Equality Act, and it will pass, it will pass, Biden said. It may not pass this Congress. It will pass because its
simple and its straightforward. Bidens support for the Equality Act makes him the rst ofcial in the Obama administration to explicitly
endorse the bill.
Biden in 2012 dubbed transgender rights the civil rights issue of our time, an assertion he repeated this month as he commended
Defense Secretary Ashton Carter for starting a review expected to lead in May to an end of the ban on openly transgender service.
It took the secretary of defense about 10 minutes, Biden said. In July 2015 no longer is there any question, transgender people are
able to serve in the United States military. All Americans who are able to serve physically should be able to serve, Biden added.
Although Biden voted for the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996 as a senator from Delaware, he later changed his position and opposed it.
He opposed efforts to amend the U.S. Constitution to ban same-sex marriage that began in 2002 and voted against the Federal Marriage
Amendment in 2006.

Luckily for the patrons at Freddies Beach Bar, a perennial favorite in Crystal City (in, as
they say, YES, honey, VIRGINIA!), bartender Sarah Slocum really enjoys her job, saying,
I love that when I arrive at work, I feel like Im walking into a party with all my friends
already there I just happen to be the one that getsto make all the drinks!
Whether youre there for karaoke, bingo or a Freddies Follies drag show, theres
really never a dull moment at Freddies, although Slocum confesses to also enjoying the
quieter nights when she can chat in a more leisurely way with customers. While she has
a particular afnity for mixing martinis, Slocum likes presenting the Flashing Flamingo,
an in-your-face concoction of watermelon and pomegranate vodkas and lip-puckering
juices that arrives with a ashing ice cube oating in the depths of a shbowl-like glass: It
denitely lends some liquid courage to help you get up and sing karaoke, she says. (KH)

Runner-up: David Claypool
Since I rst started hanging out in D.C. three years ago, I wanted to win this, says Chris
Jay, a professional photographer in the Baltimore/Washington area. Last year I wasnt
even nominated, and this year I turned up in three categories. Its the result of a lot of hard
work.
Jay, whos been taking photographs for 20 years, is currently focusing on a project
titled Kingxtaposition, a collection of work capturing the many faces of drag kings. Her
subjects to date have primarily been members of the D.C. Kings, a troupe with which shes
performed. But Jay has plans to expand.
Based in Howard County, Maryland, Jay wants to take her project on the road.
The goal is to start traveling the country and meeting kings and photographing them. This
project is big, but its not something Im doing for money. I just want to tell stories from the
perspective of someone who changes through the process of performing. I want to keep
digging into that.
At her business, Chris Jay Photos, Jay shoots portraits of performers, small business
owners and local artists.
I keep my prices reasonable so people can afford to promote themselves. I like to help them
realize what they see in their heads.
Her introduction to photography was at a JC Penny Portrait Studio where she worked
after graduating from high school. During the rst Christmas season, I shot bazillions of
family portraits and loved it. After that I worked for a company taking school portraits for
seven years.
Jays most personal work consists of self-portraits documenting her struggles with
depression. I like to raise awareness of what its like to live with a mental illness. My
everyday life isnt easy. But once I get going, its hard to stop me. (PF)

This is the second year that Thomas Coughlin has been named Best Trans Advocate in
the Blades Best of Gay D.C. Readers Poll Awards. When he won last year, he was a staff
psychotherapist and transgender health advocate at Whitman-Walker Health. Hes now in
private practice with an ofce near Dupont Circle.
A long-time D.C. resident, Coughlin joined the Army in 1986 and was stationed at the
Pentagon. After his service, he decided to stay in the area and earned a masters degree
in Clinical Community Counseling from Johns Hopkins University He came out as gay in
1985 and began to come out as trans in 1999. He currently lives in Silver Spring with his
wife and stepchildren (and their dog Maize).
In a 2014 Queery prole in the Blade, Coughlin said his LGBT heroes were those in the
community facing harassment, discrimination and oppression every single day, but still nding
the courage to live their truth. Seriously, thats the heroic stuff. That passion clearly underlines
his approach to counseling. As he says on his website, sometimes creating or maintaining a
happy, satisfying life requires help. I support you in your journeytoward your true self.
Coughlin has also been a leader in providing transgender cultural competency training
to businesses, educational institutions and private agencies that wish to learn more about
transgender lives. He works with organizations to help them understand and support
transgender employees and assists professionals who wish to better serve their clients in
providingcompassionate and competent care to members of the transgender community. (BTC)

NBC4s Wendy Rieger stumbled upon broadcast journalism when she was a college
drop-out looking to make money as an actress. She found a job reading the news on
camera in Norfolk, Va., and fell in love with the business.
The job inspired Rieger to return to school and she earned her degree in broadcast
journalism from American University.
Rieger, a frequent emcee for SMYALs fall brunches, was struck by the injustice young
LGBT people faced when she was doing a story on SMYAL and at the time was not allowed
to say the location for fear of it being attacked.
What kind of insanity is that? In a civilized country, Rieger says. It turns my stomach to
think that people still harbor that much hatred for something that is unlike them.
Rieger says that growing up in the South and seeing the racism African Americans faced
raised her awareness about how poorly people can be treated for being different. When she
moved to D.C., she had gay friends and noticed similar injustices that made her want to speak
out. She hopes her public persona can help LGBT issues progress in a positive direction.
If my name in any way takes away some of the fear or anxiety someone may feel
because this is an unknown to them and I can help show them that these people are
people living their lives and its normal, its going to be for the greater good in the end,
Rieger says. (MC)

Miss Private Tails is an international entertainer and professional ecdysiast who says her
mission is to inspire and electrify. Born just outside of Hollywood, Calif., she has been
performing burlesque since 2005 and has been based in D.C. for the past eight years. She
is Miss Gay United States Capital City Femme Fatale (2013) and the eternal Miss Nubian
DMV (2009) and was the First Miss Phase 1 (2010). She is also the regional promoter for
Burlypicks, the only international talent competition focused on burlesque and variety.
Her scintillating act draws on a wide variety of inuences including classical burlesque,
hip-hop, boi-lesque and Broadway. She currently has more than 100 polished routines in
her performance repertoire, but she also enjoys the creative process of developing new
numbers and looks forward to the opportunity to whip up a fresh new performance for an
enthusiastic audience. Shes been dancing and entertaining since childhood and received
a bachelors degree in theater from Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pa., with a focus on
both acting and directing.
Miss Private Tails proudly notes that she knows how to charm the large bills out of the
pockets of her audience, but also notes that since burlesque is the art of the tease, she
doesnt necessarily have to show a lot of skin to have an entertaining performance. In fact,
she cleans it up every year as the emcee of D.C. Youth Pride every April.
You can see her at Unfastened: DC at Phase 1 on Nov. 6. (BTC)

This is the second win for the insanely fun queertastic group Frankie & Betty. The bank
kicked it off four years ago when Rachel Bauchman (singer, bass, guitar) and Jessie Strick
(lead guitar) met at an open mic at Phase 2. With their love of pop culture references
and obnoxious jokes, the duo immediately hit it off and started performing together. Six
months ago they added drummer Judy Bad to the mix.
Frankie & Betty have become active members of the D.C. music community as well as
hosts for local burlesque shows. Their style is fast, fun and light. Strick says, Its morphed
into a really fun live show now. We love to banter and interact with the audience. We love
joking around with each other and to play some fun songs in between.
They say their musical inuences are Florence and the Machine, Le Tigre, Tegan and
Sara, Feist and Santigold, but (with tongues rmly planted in cheek), they also admit that
MGD, JB, PBR and OPP are major inuences. Strick says a recent highlight was playing
the 9:30 Club for Phasefest. That was by far the most exciting gig for the band to date,
she says. We have all dreamed of playing that stage since we were little girls, so it was
honestly a dream come true and a memory we will never forget.
The band has been taking a break lately to celebrate Rachels wedding, but they will
update their Facebook page when they start booking new gigs. And they offer this impish
guarantee: We make sure that every audience member leaves a performance with a smile
on their face from having been a part of both a musical and comedic experience. (BTC)

You may have seen Destiny B. Childs (Richard Legg) performing at a number of local venues,
but her act is anything but small. With stints at the Academy of Washington Inc., Ziegfelds/
Secrets and Freddies Beach Bar, she has become a staple in the local drag community.
A Pensacola, Fla., native, Legg was stationed at Walter Reed when in the U.S. Army in
1996. He decided to stay in the area and later decided to try performing in drag in 2003.
His drag mother Ophelia Bottoms (Charles McWilliams) praised his performance and with
her encouragement, he continued performing.
Since then, Childs has continued performing all over the District. She regularly emcees
on the main stage at Capital Pride and was Empress II in the Imperial Court of Washington
two years ago. (MC)

ROSES LUXURY
Runner-up: Barcelona
Just two years ago, Roses Luxury was barely a twinkle in the eyes of D.C. diners, who
were hard-pressed to understand why anyone would stand in line for up to four hours to
get a table at this Capitol Hill gem.
With a 20-year lease, Roses Luxury aims to stand the test of time and chef-owner Aaron
Silverman thinks that standing in line that is, not taking reservations is the best way
to make the restaurant truly open for all, since no one can book up the tables months in
advance. This begs a question: Is it worth it? The simple answer: yes.
Theres a reason why Roses Luxury has been racking up accolades from Bon Appetit
which named it Americas Best New Restaurant in 2014 along with just about every
news outlet in D.C.: the food is innovative, intelligent and undeniably special. On Roses
current menu, you might nd yourself with a salad of crispy pigs ear with a fresh salsa of
mango and cabbage or hand-cut chitarra, a porous pasta that holds sauce particularly
well in this case, a soffritto of caramelized cauliower and white wine. So, go ahead and
get in line. Itll be worth the wait and you can get a treat from nearby District Doughnut
to munch until your tables ready. (KH)

Runner-up: Thaitanic
The original location of Beau Thai opened in Shaw in 2010 under the direction of
husbands Ralph Brabham and Drew Portereld and chef Aschara Viggsittaboot with a
goal to bring authentic Thai cuisine that didnt rely on curry from a can.
Now expanded to new sites in Shaw and Mount Pleasant (with a noodle shop at the original
spot on New Jersey Ave. NW), Beau Thai continues to impress diners with fresh ingredients
and thoughtful preparation. Because the curry paste is actually made from scratch at Beau
Thai, its worth ordering up at least one curry for the table an interesting combination is
the marinated duck with grapes, pineapple and tomato and be sure to try the Pad Thai, a
classic that can sometimes be made overly sweet, ostensibly to suit the American palate, but
has a tangy undertone of tamarind here. The brunch menu at the Mount Pleasant location
offers some fun fusion twists on the classics, from the Egg Drop Grits made with Thai rice
soup to the Hangover Special, a tempting concoction of fried eggs with sweet Thai sausage
and taro home fries. Top it all off with a Homemade Ginger Beer, which blends a ginger-lime
pure with Singha, and that hangover will be just a memory. (KH)

Theres a good reason why Rasika chef Vikram Sunderam won a James Beard Award
last year the avors and textures coming from his kitchens at both the Penn Quarter and

make us rethink our preconceived notions about Indian food.
Youll nd no bland lentil mush here or doughy samosas; instead, look for bright splashes
of saffron and fresh curry leaves, crisp shards of coconut and punches of vinegar, all
hallmarks of what is probably the best Indian cuisine to be found anywhere in the United
States and weve got it right here in D.C. Even better, Rasika is a reasonably priced ne
dining restaurant that is not stingy on its hours, being open for lunch, dinner and pretty
much every holiday. It offers Sunday brunch at the West End restaurant with such delights as
Coconut Jaggery Pancakes and Eggs Kejiriwal; and a chefs tasting menu that proves Indian

Best Sandwich
TAYLOR GOURMET
Runner-up: Sundervich
When two guys from Philly decided to open up a hoagie shop on the barely burgeoning
H Street corridor back in 2008, the idea was to make really good, fresh sandwiches with
homemade air. Since then, Taylor Gourmet has expanded to 10 locations in the region,
proving that apparently we were all hungry for a hoagie.
With an eye on quality, all the beef, pork, and turkey is roasted in-house, the bread
is baked locally, and the Italian-style cured meats are sourced from Virginia, giving a
decidedly local spin on Philadelphia-style cheesesteaks and Italian hoagies stuffed with
everything from sausage, onion and peppers to hand-rolled meatballs topped with fresh
marinara. While youre there, dont forget to order up a side of the crispy polenta fries
you wont regret it. (KH)

If you want to know whats going on in LGBT D.C., you need to follow @DCHomos on Twitter.
Described as News, noise, food, men, sports, art, charity, fashion, TV, happy thoughts, all
things gay and D.C. Sentinel, silent and sure, its a delightful mlange of everything serious
and sublime about the nations capital in 140 characters or less.
The mastermind behind @DCHomos is Josie Romero. When he moved to D.C. from Miami
Beach six years ago, he didnt know anyone in town. But with his experience in the tech
industry, he knew that Twitter was just starting to catch on and that D.C. was one of the rst
cities to embrace tweeting.
So he decided to use the new technology to help build a circle of friends. That was before
Twitter had a search function, so he looked for screen names that included D.C. He slowly
compiled a list of kindred souls and started posting lists of local happy hours. About 18
months ago, Romero turned the feed in a different direction. He added a focus on news and
social issues, especially marriage equality.
Basically, he describes the feed as things I share on Twitter instead of Facebook. He does
note that the feed attracts a lot of negative feedback, which he tends to ignore.
Ive adopted a Dont Feed the Trolls policy. I try to keep things positive.
As of press time, @DCHomos has made more than 110,000 tweets, is following 27,300 users
and has over 75,300 followers. Romero has also started live tweeting events (he had a lot of
fun at the recent Reel Afrmations Paris Is Burning mini-ball), so be sure to keep him in the
loop. (BTC)

When out businessman Scott Roewer talks about organizing and closets, hes not necessarily talking about politics. Hes probably
talking about organizing your closets to harmonize your life. As Roewer likes to point out, anyone can organize your space, but it takes
a professional to organize you.
After working as a music educator and an event planner, Roewer decided to apply his fervent entrepreneurial spirit and creative expertise
to helping clients organize their lives. He founded the Organizing Agency in 2004 to help clients create productivity systems for their homes
and ofces. The Agency also provides stress-free moving planning and offers workshops on shaping spaces and managing time.
A native of Bellevue, Neb., Roewer earned his Certied Professional Organizer designation in 2007 and is an active member of the
National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO). He is also the co-author of Get Organized Today, a book about strategic
organizing, and has been a contributor to Time magazine, Better Homes and Gardens, MSNBC, Today, HGTV and Martha Stewart Living.
Inspired by the excess encountered in their work, the Organizing Agency team makes giving back to the community a priority. Roewer
and his staff are active supporters of the Unstoppable Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, Dress for Success and Soles4Souls. He is also a
member of the Capital Area Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce.
Roewer has been widely recognized for his professional and philanthropic work. In 2008NAPO-Washington, D.C. awarded him with
its inaugural Professional Organizer of the Year Award and in 2012 NAPO recognized him with its highest honor, the Founders Award.
In 2011, the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds named him Joint Base Andrews Hometown Hero, an honor that included a ight with the
Thunderbirds in their F-16 Fighter Jet. (BTC)

How long have you been out and who
was the hardest person to tell?
I came out almost 21 years ago. Believe
it or not, the hardest person to tell was
my gay father and his partner. I know
it seems like the most ideal scenario,
but I still went through many of the
same anxieties of coming out to straight
parents. Thankfully, my dad recognized
my struggles and oered books in
helping queer youth with coming out
issues. He even found a youth group for
me to attend on Friday evenings at the
Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Center.
Whos your LGBT hero?
Its impossible for me to settle on just one
how about Marsha P. Johnson, Harvey
Milk and Mychal Judge for starters?

and my clients wellness is always my top priority. Winning again tells me that
my hard work has paid o.
Weingart does all kinds of massage deep-tissue work, sports massage,

riots in 1968, the neighborhood has begun to ourish again. This is thanks to
several factors: diminished inventory
throughout the city, redevelopment of
local landmarks like the Howard Theatre,
creation of many large housing projects,
and improvements in general infrastructure. But even as the area changes, a
pervasive spirit continues to imbue Shaw
with a special avor all its own.
While the area was originally the uppermost limit of the city, its now considered
to be at the heart of it all. Close to the geographic center of the District, it has three
Metro stations and countless restaurants,
bars and other entertainment venues. Two
historic theaters and the O-Street Northern Market (which was originally similar to
Capitol Hills Eastern Market) have been
redeveloped within its bounds. Victorian
row homes of every shape and size exist
next to brand-new condominiums, and
pop-up structures (like them or not) have
also shaped the look of the neighborhood.
In short, its a haven for diversity at the
center of everything D.C.
The sales statistics reect the renewed
focus on Shaw. Shaws median sale price
in the rst quarter of 2015 was up more
than 15 percent while the city as a whole
was only up 5 percent. That same quarter Logan Circle was actually down 28.3
percent and Dupont/Adams Morgan was
down 10 percent too. On the whole, the
values are changing in Shaw faster than
any other part of the city at the moment,
with some units already selling at more
than $1,000 per square foot.
Washingtons real estate trend has
been ongoing for more than a decade,

with only a brief and slight slowdown following the mortgage crisis that started
in 2008. Unlike the rest of the country,
and even unlike the rest of the region,
home values exceeded their peak values
of 2007 in 2010 in Washington. Most of
the rest of the area has still not reached
those peaks yet, even eight years later.
Shaw takes it a step further, increasing
in median home value 28 percent since
2005. The median sale price in the neighborhood is now just about $600,000, compared to Washingtons $521,000. If trends
