When no emergency or error is detected the frequency-converter is ready for running a pump. Starting one of the motors is possible in local-control by the switches on the main panels and the converters key-pad. The bus communication is used for starting the frequency-converters in remotecontrol (from HMI-panel or cargo-computer).

To stop a pump, press the stop button on the panel in local-control or press the stop-button on
the HMI-panel, corresponding to the correct converter-section if remote-control is selected. The
motor will decelerate to 0 RPM after which the contactor is switched-off.

4.3 Control units on converter panels (local-control)

Besides the main-switch (and the emergency-stop on the PLC-cabinets), several control-units are
used to control a halve Matrix system in local-control. In remote-control the buttons on the HMIpanel are used to control a full-matrix system.

Figure 4-4: Control-buttons on the PLC-cabinet

Several key-switches on the PLC-cabinets are used to select the converter for running a pump. The
frequency-converters on the starboard side panels are able to run the starboard pumps in local
control and the converters on port side can be selected for running the portside pumps.

Figure 4-5: Control-buttons on the PLC-cabinet

On the matrix-cabinets the pumps selection is made for controlling the selected pump in local
mode, after-which the converter can be controlled by its key-pad.

5 Steps for controlling a pump in local-mode

The following steps should be followed to select a pump and for controlling it in local-mode.
Step:
1.

Description:
Select the converter for
running the pumps in local-mode by the designated key-switch on the
PLC-panel. For example,
select converter

2.

Select the pump for activating the connection between the pump-motor
and the converter. The
converter and the pump
selection should be made
on corresponding sides in
local-mode (both on
starboard or both on portside). The start/stop
button corresponding to
the selected converter
and the desired pump
should be activated.

3.

The selected converter

can be controlled by its
key-pad using menu 3,
according to the Vacon
Users Manual

4.

When the pumps is

stopped with the designated stop-button, the
Control Place selection
(key-pad M3) should be
set back to Fieldbus
and the key-switch must
be returned in its original
position (remote).

Example:

6 Control the system on the HMI-panel (remote-control)

Besides the main-switch, several control-units are used to control the system in remote-control on
the HMI-panel.

Figure 6-30: Opening the dry-run screen
Before the dry-run screen is opened the correct pass-code for level 5 needs to be entered.

6.13 20: The dry-run screen

Figure 6-31: HMI dry-run screen.

27

The dry-run screen is used to enter all dry-run values for the CPU control. After pressing one of the
numeric displays a keyboard will pop-up for entering the data.

Figure 6-32: Opening the pop-up key-pad for entering the dry-run values
After entering the desired value, the next display will be activated for changing. Activating a display
is also possible by touching it.

7 Dry-run
A dry-run protection can be programmed in the HMI-panel as well as in the frequency-converter. For
setting the under load-protection parameters in the converter, the protections chapter (P2.7.17 to
P2.7.20) is used, according to the users manual (Multi-purpose control application).
The settings on the HMI-panel for the dry-run protection can be changed individually for each pump.
The dry-run screen is used to display the settings for the maximum speed and the minimum current
at dry-run protection.
Warning:
The dry-run settings should only be changed by capable-personal and is accessible when all motors
are switched off.

28

7.1 Explaining the dry-run warning and alarm on the HMI-panel

The dry-run warning time is fixed at 120 sec. When a dry run is detected according to the formula
below, a warning is generated in the HMI-panel to indicate that a controller should take action.
Dry-run formula:
DR = [(PS>SS) & (PI<SI)]
DR = Dry-run detection
PS = Process value speed
SS = Set value speed
PI = Process-value current
SI = Set value current
A dry run is detected when the measured speed of the pump is higher than the minimum speed setting for the dry run and when the measured current for this pump is lower than the maximum current
setting for dry run.
After detecting a dry-run situation, according to the parameter settings on the HMI-panel, the dry-run
warning is immediately activated. This warning is displayed by a pop-up message on the HMI-panel
(with the dry-run detection time).
The dry-run error will be activated when the dry-run time counter value is counting 120sec. or more.
An internal up/down counter counts the accumulated dry-run time. If the dry-run counter value goes
above 120sec.the protection will cause an error and the pump is stopped. A warning indication will
stay active, until the accumulated dry-run time has reached zero.

8 Parameters
The Multi-purpose control application is selected in the converter, which provides a wide range of
parameters for controlling the connected motors. This application has a wide flexibility of I/O signals
and therefore its important to keep the parameter settings unchanged. Changing the parameter settings can influence the starting and stopping sequence, which is important for a reliable control of
the installation. All parameters are explained in the Vacon NX Users Manual (chapter 6).

9 Fault tracing
When a fault is detected from one of the frequency converters, a message for the corresponding
converter panel is showed on the HMI-panel. A converter fault is detected by the converter electronics after which the drive is stopped and the symbol F together with the original number of the fault
appears on the converters display and in the message-logging window on the HMI. The different
fault codes and correcting actions are presented in the fault-table in the Vacon NX Users Manual
(All in one).
Besides the converter faults several other faults and problems can be traced using the table below.
Fault or problem
All main-switches are turned
on but the control supply indication is not illuminated and
its not possible to start a
pump in local-control.
Its not possible to reset an
emergency situation.

Its not possible to start one

converter panel in remote control.

Possible cause
The circuit breaker for the
230VAC control-power is not
switched on or the controlpower is not connected.
1. The 2 input-circuits to
the emergency relay
are not closed.
2. Theres no closed loop
in the reset circuit
while resetting.

1. One or more interfacerelays are broken.

2. The converters parameters are changed.
3. The buscommunication is not
working or addressing
is incorrect.

30

Correcting measures
Connect the control-power
230VAC/50 or 60 Hz/ Ik <
25kA or switch on the circuit
breaker.
1. Turn all emergencyswitches in safe position or check all wires
and contacts.
2. One or more contactors where not
switched off or check
wires and contacts.
1. Check all interfacerelays and wiring connections for remotecontrol.
2. Check all parameters
in the converter.
3. Check the bus communication by the
Vacon profibus manual or check the slave
address settings

Fault or problem
Starting or stopping pumps is
not possible, while all hardware seems to be OK.
Resetting a converter fault is
not possible.

Possible cause
Parameter settings in the converter are not correct.

Correcting measures
Set all parameters according
to the last settings

The fault situation is not solved

or the reset button is not working.

The contactors can be controlled from the HMI-panel but

the converters dont work
The communication to the frequency converters seems to
work, but the contactors etc.
dont
The communication between
the HMI-panel and the frequency-converter is slower
than normal.
Resetting the emergency
situation is not possible.

Theres a problem with the

bus-communication for the frequency converters
Theres a problem with the I/O
hardware in the matrix or PLC
cabinets.

Use the fault-table in the

Vacon NX Users Manual (All
in one) to solve the fault or
check the wires and interfacerelays in the panel.
Check all communication
hardware, wiring and parameters.
Check all RIO hardware, wiring and dipswitch settings on
the I/O modules.

Resetting the emergency

situation is not possible.

The bus-communication is not

working correctly, because of
time-outs.

Check all wiring.

The reset input on the emergency-relay is not powered or

one of the emergency channels
was not switched-off while
pressing an emergency-button.
The reset input on the emergency-relay is not powered or
one of the emergency channels
