Dear Parishioners,
In the first reading from Isaiah: By his sufferings shall my servant justify many,
taking their faults on himself. Jesus is that suffering servant who intercedes on our
behalf and was eternal salvation for us all.
The Letter to the Hebrews puts the same idea in another way: We have the
supreme High Priest who has gone through to the highest heavens Jesus is that High
Priest who intercedes in Gods presence for us he is both Priest and sacrifice to take
our sins away. This is at the very heart of the Mass we celebrate today. That is why we
can approach the altar and the throne of Gods mercy because we have the Suffering
Servant, Jesus as our Saviour.
In the gospel, we see the exact opposite: James and John are seeking glory and
power. They request the best jobs in Jesus kingdom. They have no idea what the
implications of their request. All the Apostles had been previously discussing who was
the greatest Jesus told them it was about being servants. They didnt listen. So when
nobody else seemed to be making a bid for the best positions, James and John decided to
make a move and asked Jesus for the key positions.
Jesus, as ever patient with the two of them, explained yet again, that real power is
based on SERVICE. All of this caused division: the other ten began to feel indignant
with James and John. They were to follow Jesus own pattern: He did not come to be
served, but to serve. Here we have the example of true greatness,
THANKS: A word of thanks to all who attended our Westminster Justice and
Peace Annual Day. I hope you enjoyed the presentations. Fr Sean McDonagh took us
through Pope Francis Encyclical on the care of our common home and helped unpacked
its contents. He also guided us towards understanding the Climate Change Conference
in Paris in December. Sarah spoke about a LiveSimply Parish and Christine spoke on the
work of Pax Christi in France and whats happening there in preparation for Paris.
But notice the Cosmic Walk: this was our final part of the day. It covers the 13.7
trillion years of creation up to the present day. You may not be able to notice that in this
timeline of history, we humans appear just centimetres at the end of the line! While we
are important, it also puts us in our place when it comes to Gods master plan of
creation. Have a look at one of the booklets giving the details of some of the major
stations in the history of our origins.
Thats all for this week, God bless.
