Talking about a completed action in the past with PAST SIMPLE:

What did you watch on TV last night?
Talking about an action in progress in the past with PAST CONTINUOUS:
I was reading an email yesterday at four, but she wasnt doing it then.
What were you doing last weekend at lunchtime?

Mixed past tenses to talk about an action which happened in the middle
of another action:
Jen was eating her lunch when I phoned her.
I saw you yesterday while you were walking to school.
