9. 300 m3 of air is supplied per minute from outdoor conditions of 40 oC DBT and 26oC WBT to an airconditioned room. The air is dehumidified first by a cooling coil having bypass factor 0.32 and dew
point temperature 15oC and then by a chemical dehumidifier. Air leaves the chemical dehumidifier at
30oC DBT. Air is then passed over a cooling coil whose surface temperature is 15 oC and bypass factor
0.26. Calculate the capacities of the two cooling coils and dehumidifier.
10. 200 m3 of air per minute is passed through the adiabatic humidifier. The condition of air at inlet is 40 oC
DBT and 15% RH and the outlet condition is 25 oC DBT and 20oC WBT. Find the final dew point
temperature and the amount of water vapor added to the air per minute.
11. In a cooling application, moist air enters a refrigeration coil at the rate of 100 kg of dry air per minute at
35oC and 50% RH. The apparatus dew point of the coil is 5 oC and by-pass factor is 0.15. Determine the
outlet state of moist air and cooling capacity of coil in TR.
12. Room air at 20oC DBT and 50% RH is mixed with outdoor air at 40oC DBT and 30% RH in the ratio
4:1. The mixture is passed through a cooling coil whose temperature is 10oC and by-pass factor is 0.2.
Determine the following:
a) Condition of air before entering the coil
b) Condition of air leaving the coil
c) Refrigeration load on the cooling coil when 250 m3/min of air is supplied to the room.
13. A single stage reciprocating compressor is required to compress 1.5 m3/min of vapor refrigerant from 1
bar to 8 bar. Find the power required to drive the compressor, if the compression of refrigerant is
isothermal.
14. A vapor compression refrigeration machine, with R-12 as refrigerant, has a capacity of 12 tonne of
refrigeration operating between -28oC and 26oC. The refrigerant is subcooled by 4 oC before entering
expansion valve and the vapor is superheated by 5 oC before leaving the evaporator. The machine has a
six cylinder single acting compressor with stroke equal to 1.25 the bore. It has a clearance of 3% of the
stroke volume. Determine a) theoretical power required b) COP c) volumetric efficiency d) Bore and
stroke of the cylinder. Speed of compressor is 1000 rpm.
15. A single stage single acting reciprocating compressor has a bore of 180 mm and a stroke of 270 mm. It
receives vapor refrigerant at 1 bar and delivers it at 5 bar. If the compression and expansion follows the
law pv1.25 = constant and clearance volume is 5% of stroke volume, determine:
a) The power required to drive the compressor, if its speed is 600 rpm and
b) the volumetric efficiency of the compressor
