CONTENT OVERVIEW: The drama narrates through action, the adventurous journey
of a princess in disguise through a village and the problems that she faces on the
journey.
CONTENT ANALYSIS: The drama begins with a description of the village and the
princess. The first scene is the village street . There is a cross on three steps seen in
the middle of the road. There is a pond with some ducks on the left side and a few
cottages with gardens on the right side. The princess then enters into that scene.
Her physical appearance is explicitly and vividly described. She is fully covered with
dust. The edge of her skirt is torn and one of her shoes has worn out. Her pigtailed
hair is covered under a cotton handkerchief. She is seen picking the flowers that
hang out of the cottage gardens and singing as she goes. Her song is dedicated to
her prince where she expresses her boundless love for her husband. She sings that
all his smiles , tears , fears ,and songs are for him. She then sits down on the steps
of the cross with the flowers in her lap. The princess then says that she is unaware
of the place that she is now standing. She guesses that she must be twelve miles
from home and no one has identified her. She then laughs at the people of
Florimund who has not identified her. She asserts that she will not mind the sentries
and banquets if she can do this kind of adventure once a month. The people of
Florimund will then treat her as an angel when she returns from the village. She
thinks about the happiness of the prince on seeing the princess in dust and rags
who has returned from the village. She wonders on seeing the village sans any
people. She wants a coach to go home. She calls the place the village of the dead.
She says that she needs a glass of milk since she is thirsty. She hopes that one of
the villagers would take her home.
