Product description

1 Product description
1.1 Function
1 ns

Radio detection and ranging: Radar.

VEGAPULS radar sensors are used for continuous and non-contact distance measurement. The measured distance corresponds to
a filling height and is provided as level.

emission reflection receipt

Smallest 5,8 GHz radar signals are emitted
from the antenna of the radar sensor as short
pulses. The radar impulses reflected by the
sensor environment and the product are received by the antenna as radar echoes. The
running period of the radar impulses from
emission to receipt is proportional to the distance and hence to the level.

278 ns

Pulse sequence
VEGAPULS radar sensors can reach this in a
special procedure of the time transformation
which spreads more than 3,6 million echo
pictures per second in a slow-motion picture,
then freezes and evaluates them.

Time transformation
Measuring
distance

Hence it is possible for the VEGAPULS radar

sensors to evaluate the slow-motion pictures of
the sensor environment precisely and in detail
in cycles of 0,1 seconds without using very
time consuming frequency analysis necessary
for other radar principles.

Virtually all products can be measured

emission - reflection - receipt
The radar pulses are emitted by the antenna
system as impulse packets with a pulse duration of 1 ns and impulse breaks of 278 ns; this
corresponds to a pulse package frequency of
3,6 MHz. In the pulse breaks the antenna
system operates as receiver. Hence signal
running periods of less than one millionth of a
second must be processed and the echo
pictures must be evaluated in a fraction of a
second.

Radar signals physically react similar to visible

light. According to the quantum theory they
penetrate empty space. Hence they are not
bound such as e.g. sound to a conductive
product (air) and spread like light with light
velocity. The radar signals react to two electrical primary quantities:
- the electrical conductivity of a substance.
- the dielectric constant of a substance.

Each application is unique, hence each radar

sensor requires some basic information on
application and environment.

VEGAPULS 64 and 81

Operation and parameter adjustment on the

radar sensors is carried out with
- PC or
- signal conditioning instrument.

Adjustment with PC
The set-up and adjustment of VEGAPULS
radar sensors is generally made on the PC
with the adjustment program VVO (VEGA
Visual Operating) under Windows . The program is menu-guided by pictures, graphics
and process visualizations for quick operation
and parameter adjustment.

Beside the PC, sensors with digital transmission of measured data (VBUS) can also be
directly adjusted with the connected signal
conditioning instrument.

Sensor with digital signal output (VBUS), for

adjustment the PC is either plugged to the
two-wire signal line (e.g. on a terminal socket)
or directly to the VEGALOG 571 Processing
system or to the VEGAMET signal conditioning
instrument
On the sensor, on the branch of signal lines or
in the process control system you will have
access to the sensors. The adjustment software allows a glance into each vessel.

Beside the PC, sensors with digital signal

output (VBUS) can also be adjusted with the
signal conditioning instrument
In addition VEGAMET 514 V and 515 V signal
conditioning instruments have and adjustment
module by which you can carry the parameter
adjustment in text dialogue.

The adjustment and parameter data can be

stored on PC and transferred to other sensors.
The adjustment program VVO divides the
adjustment in three stages:
- operator (adjustment and indication of
measured values)
- maintenance (parameter adjustment)
- planning (service and system parameters).
The adjustment stages are protected by access hierarchies so that important parameter
adjustments or service adjustments are separated from the standard adjustment. By using
a password, the adjustment values, parameters and service adjustments are protected
against manipulation.

Product description

1.4 Antennas

Rod antenna
Rod antennas with high chemical resistance require smaller
flange diameters (DN 50). The
antenna rod and the wetted
flange parts are completely
manufactured from PTFE so
that the rod antenna can be
easily cleaned and is hence
insensitive to condensation.
The rod antenna is suitable for
pressures up to 16 bar and
temperatures up to 200C.

The antenna is the eye of the radar sensors.

The antenna shape does not lead to assume
how precise the geometrical form of an antenna must be adapted to the physical features of the electromagnetic fields. A shape,
deciding on the sensitivity, similar to the sensitivity of a directional microphone.
Four antenna systems are available for different applications and process requirements.
Each system is featured out beside the focusing characteristics by special chemical and
physical features.

Pipe antenna
Horn antenna
Horn antennas are best suited
for most applications. They
focus the radar signals very
well. Manufactured out of
1.4571 (stst), alloy C4, alloy
C22 or Tantalum are very rugged and physically as well as
chemically resistant. They are
suitable for pressures up to
64 bar and with appropriate
cooling for product temperatures of more than
1000C.

VEGAPULS 64 and 81

Pipe antennas on surge or

bypass pipes only form a
complete antenna system in
conjunction with a measuring
pipe which can be also bent.
Pipe antennas are best suited
for products with strong product movements or products
with low dielectric constant.
The measuring pipe means a
conductor for the radar signals. The running period of the
radar signals changes in the
pipe and depends on the pipe diameter. The
electronics must be programmed against the
pipe inner diameter so that the running period
can be adapted.

Classification
Classification EEx i intrinsically safe
With classification i (intrinsically safe) electrical circuits are produced which cannot ignite
an explosive mixture or explosive substance
neither during operation or in case of failure.
Hence it is ensured that the electrical energy
used (short-circuit) is lower than the ignition
energy required to ignite the substance.
In addition the capacitive and inductive energy storage is restricted such that they cannot store sufficient energy to ignite an explosive mixture.

VEGAPULS 64 and 81

Classification EEx e increased safety

With the classification e (increased safety)
measures taken which avoid that a connected,
non-intrinsically safe circuit can ignite an explosive mixture or explosive substance.
Selected materials, increased contact and
track distances as well as lowest component
temperatures exclude sparks and heating.

Classification EEx d
With the classification d (pressure tight encapsulation) instruments are constructed such
that even in case a mixture inside the instrument ignites, no ignition energy escape to the
explosive atmosphere.

Types and versions: Configuration of measuring systems

2.3 Configuration of measuring systems

A measuring system of sensors with a 0 20 mA signal output (compact instrument) consists
only of one sensor. For sensors with digital signal output, the measuring system consists of one
sensor and one VEGAMET signal conditioning instrument or the VEGALOG Processing system.
On this page and the following ones you will see measuring systems with sensors providing a
level proportional 0 ... 20 mA current (compact instruments) as output signal.
On the following pages you will see measuring systems with sensors delivering a digital signal a
VEGAMET signal conditioning instrument or to the VEGALOG Processing system. Signal conditioning instrument or Processing system deliver with these sensors various level proportional
output signals such as 0 20 mA currents, 0 10 V voltage or switching signals (relay) .

Measuring system with one VEGAPULS 64 sensor (compact instrument)

Analogue, standardized 0 20 mA-current signal as signal output. For adjustment, a digital
adjustment signal is superimposed to the 0 20 mA-sensor signal.
Adjustment and parameter adjustment via a PC and the adjustment program VVO. For adjustment the PC is connected via the adapter VEGACONNECT to the 0 20 mA-signal line.
Optionally an external digital/analogue indication. The indication can be separated from the
sensor up to 25 m.
The max. permissible resistance (load) of the 0 20 mA-signal output is 500 .
In case the input resistors of the processing systems connected to the 0 20 mA-signal output
are less than 100 , a resistor of more than 100 must be switched into the 0 ... 20 mA signal
line for the adjustment period.
The digital adjustment signal is short-circuited or damped via too small input resistors so that the
digital communication with the PC would no more be ensured.

Measuring
range

The reference pane for the measuring range of the radar sensors is
always the lower part of the sensor.
The measuring range of both instrument series (VEGAPULS 64 and
VEGAPULS 81) is generally
0 20 m. Optionally sensors with a
measuring range of 0 35 m can
be supplied. For measurements in
surge or bypass pipes (pipe antenna) the max. measuring distance
is reduced by appr. 20%. Please
note for measurements where the
products are filled up to the sensor
flange, that build-up on the antenna
can cause faulty measurements.

Emission cone and false reflections

The radar signals are focused by the antenna
system. The signals leave the antenna, similar
to a light beam of a headlight, in the form of a
cone. This emission cone depends on the
antenna used.
Each object in this emission cone causes a
reflection of the radar signals. Especially during the first meters of the emission cones,
pipes, struts etc. cause strong false reflections. E.g. in a distance of 6 m the false signal
of a pipe is 9 time more than in a distance of
18 m.

Mounting and installation: General installation instructions

False reflection
Flat installations and struts cause large false
reflections. They reflect the radar signal with
high energy density.

Profiles with smooth interfering surfaces cause

large interfering signals

If flat installations in the range of the radar

signals cannot be avoided, it is recommended
to reflect the interfering signals with a scattering screen. Due to this scattering the interfering signals will be less energetic and diffuse
so that they can be filtered by the sensor.

Cover flat profiles with scatting screens

Smoothed interfering surfaces have a diffuse

reflection of the radar signals and cause false
reflections with low energy density. Hence they
are more uncritical than reflections on flat
surfaces.

Round profiles diffusely spread the radar

signals

4.2 Measurement of liquids

Horn antenna

When mounting on dished boiler or basket

arch vessel ceilings also on the long socket
side, the antenna has to protrude at least
10 mm.

Horn antenna on DIN-socket piece

Most of the time the mounting of radar sensors
is made on very short DIN-socket pieces. The
instrument flange is the reference pane for the
measuring range. The antenna should always
protrude out of the flange pipe.
> 10 mm

Reference pane

Mounting on a dished boiler tank

Mounting on short DIN-socket piece

When the DIN-socket piece is longer, please
note that the horn antenna must protrude at
least 10 mm out of the socket.

Do not mount the instrument on arched vessel

ceilings in the middle of the tank or close to
the outer wall of the vessel, but appr. 1/ 2 vessel
radius from the middle or from the outer vessel
wall. Arched tank ceilings act for the radar
signals like a paraboloidal reflector. If the
radar sensor is placed in the focus of a
parabolic tank cover, the sensor receives
amplified false echoes. Note that the radar
sensor is mounted outside the focus, hence
parabolic amplified false echoes are avoided.

solution. The top side of the vessel is the reference pane.

Rod antenna on DIN-socket piece

Mounting directly on the flat vessel ceiling

Rod antenna
Rod antenna on DIN-socket piece
The PTFE (Teflon) rod antenna is especially
used in aggressive products such as lyes and
acids. Applications in the food processing
industry with aseptic vessels require reaction
neutral measuring systems often with smaller
vessel openings. The teflon rod antenna is not
only reaction neutral but can be also mounted
to very small vessel openings with 50 mm
access.
For measurements of liquids with the Teflon
rod antenna, the mounting is made on a
straight DIN-socket piece. The socket however
must not be longer than 150 mm (when using
a longer antenna, not longer than 250 mm).
The rod antenna is available in flange sizes of
DN 50, DN 80, DN 100 and DN 150.

36

Rod antenna directly on vessel opening

Alternatively to the socket mounting, the rod
antenna can also mounted directly to the
circular vessel opening (holes).
Note that the mechanical load of the PTFE-rod
antenna is restricted. If the antenna is subjected to lateral power, their will be danger of
deformation or break.

VEGAPULS 64 and 81

Mounting and installation: Measurements of liquids

As an alternative to the surge pipe in the vessel, a pipe antenna outside the vessel is possible as a bypass pipe.

Pipe antenna
(surge or bypass pipe)
Pipe antennas are preferably used on vessels
with many installations such as e.g. calorifiers,
heat exchangers or quick stirrers. The measurement of products with strong turbulences,
and installations in the vessel do not cause
false reflections.
By focusing of the radar signal within the
measuring pipe, also products with small
dielectric constants (r 1,5 3) can be measured.

Note that with the measurement in a pipe, the
max. measuring range is slightly reduced (see
Technical Data).

37

Mounting and installation: Measurements of liquids

Adhesive products
When measuring adhesive products, the inner
diameter of the surge pipe must be larger. For
slightly adhesive products or products neutral
to adhesions, a measuring pipe of 50 mm is
good and cheap. For adhesive products the
surge pipe must have a larger nominal width
(e.g. 100 mm) so that build-up does not cause
Measuring errors. Surge pipe diameters of DN
50 to DN 150 can be selected.

DN 50

50

DN 100

Inhomogeneous products
If you want to measure inhomogeneous or
laminated products in a surge pipe, the surge
pipe must be provided with holes, long holes
or slots. These openings ensure that the liquid
in the pipe is mixed and corresponds to the
rest of the vessel liquid.
The more inhomogeneous the measured product, the tighter the openings should be.

Mounting and installation: Measurements of liquids

For reasons of the radar signal polarization the
holes and slots must be positioned in two rows
displaced by 180.
The mounting of the radar sensor is then such
that the type plate of VEGAPULS 64 or the
casting nose of VEGAPULS 81 is in one axis
with the rows of holes.

Surge pipe with stop valve

When using a stop valve in the surge pipe, it is
possible to carry out maintenance and service
work without opening the vessel (e.g. with
liquid gas or toxic products).
Requirement for an interference free operation
is a ball valve outlet corresponding to the pipe
diameter. The ball valve must not have any
coarse edges or throats in the outlet against
the measuring pipe.

is most of the time mounted on a short DINsocket piece.

Mounting and installation

4.4 Measurement through the

vessel wall
Radar signals can penetrate very non-conductive products such as glass or plastic. This
feature is very important for some applications.
In processes where high-purity is required
such as for semi-conductor production or
substances which are very aggressive it is
favourable that the system remains closed and
the measurement can be carried out through
the walls of plastic vessels.

The part of the radar signals reflected on the

vessel ceiling is detected by the sensor as
false echo.
When the vessel ceiling or the penetrated
plastic window is inclined in an angle of 35 to
45 to the sensor axis and the sensor with the
antenna keeps a distance to the vessel or
window of more than 400 mm the false echo is
reflected laterally and can no more be received.

A completely non-contact level measurement

is possible for products with good reflecting
features. Products with good electrical conductivity or with an r of more than 10 can be
measured through closed plastic vessels.

Plastic tank
~ 400 mm

Reflection laws
Physically the fundamental laws of reflection
should be noted. The radar signal is partly
reflected when penetrating plastic. Another
part of the radar signal reaches the product in
the vessel, to reach from the radar sensor as
the real useful reflection.

Mounting and installation: Measurement through the vessel wall

If you want to measure through the wall of a
plastic vessel, make sure that the sensor is not
too close to the outer wall of the vessel. The
emission cone of the sensor must detect the
product well and must not detect the vessel
ambient or the vessel wall.

Wrong

Optimization of the penetrated substance

If it is not possible to gate out the interfering
reflection when penetrating a vessel or a window, the interfering reflection can be nearly
deleted by the optimized thickness of the
penetrated medium.
The interfering reflections are composed of
two single reflections. One reflection when
penetrating the substance and one reflection
when the waves leave the penetrated substance.
It is a special feature of the reflection on the
incoming surface, that it is reflected with a
phase jump of half wavelength. The signals
reflected on the outgoing surface are reflected
without phase jump.

Mounting and installation: Measurement through the vessel wall

It is hence possible to optimize the thickness
of the penetrated substance so that the two
reflection waves eliminate or compensate each
other.
The following table shows the optimum substance thickness for the most important plastics and glasses which are suitable for penetration with radar sensors.
Note:
The optimum thickness or an integral multiple
of the optimum thickness can be also provided
by addition of several substance plate of identical materials. The plants must fit flush, without gaps.

4.5 False echoes

Vessel installations

The installation place of the radar sensor

should be selected so, that no struts or material inflow cross the radar signals. The following examples and instructions show the most
frequent measuring problems and how they
can be avoided.

Vessel installations such as e.g. a ladder often

cause false echoes. Provide free access of the
radar signals to the measured product when
planning your measuring point.

Vessels with shoulders

Ladder

Vessel forms with flat shoulders to the antenna

can considerably influence the measurement
due to their hard false echoes. Screens above
these flat shoulders spread the false echoes
and ensure a reliable measurement.

Vessel installations

Wrong

Struts
Struts as well as vessel installations can cause
strong fale echoes and superimpose the useful
echo. Small screens avoid effectively a direct
false echo reflection. The false echoes are
diffusely gated out and filtered out by the
measuring electronics as echo noise.

Vessels with shoulders (flat shoulders)

Correct

Inlet gates, e.g for material mixing with flat

upper side pointing to the radar sensor should
be covered by an angle screen. Hence the
false echo is gated out.

Heavy product movements

aggravate the measurement. A bypass pipe of
sufficient size, provided that there is not buildup in the measuring pipe, always ensures a
reliable measurement even with heavy
turbulences in the vessel.

Products which cause slight build-up can be
measured by using a bypass pipe with 100

this size, slight build-up does not cause problems.

Build-up
If the radar sensor is mounted too close to the
vessel wall, build-up on the vessel walls will
cause false echoes. Position the radar sensor
at a sufficient distance to the vessel wall.

45

Mounting and installation

In some cases the lower flange antenna is
used. Even here it is important that the socket
piece is as short as possible (< 15 mm).

4.6 Installation fault

Socket piece too long
When mounting the antenna in a too long
socket piece, strong false reflections are
caused, aggravating a measurement. Note
that the horn antenna protrudes at least 10 mm
out of the socket piece. When using a rod
antenna, the socket piece must have a length
of max. 150 mm (with a rod length of 485 mm
the length of the socket piece must be max.
250 mm).

Wrong

Pipe antenna, wrong polarization

direction
When measuring in a surge pipe, especially if
there are holes in the pipe for mixing, it is
important that the radar sensor is directed to
the rwo of holes.
The two rows of holes of the surge pipe displaced by 180 must be in line with the polarization direction of the radar signals. The polarization direction is either in line with position
where the type plate is fixed (VEGAPULS 64)
or in line with the casting nose on the lower
part of the housing (VEGAPULS 81).

47

Mounting and installation: Installation fault

Correct

Sensor too close to the vessel wall

Wrong

If the radar sensor is mounted too close to the

vessel wall, strong interfering signals can be
caused. Build-up, rivets, screws or weld joints
superimpose their echoes to the useful signal
or useful echo. Hence note a sufficient distance of the sensor to the vessel wall.

Casting nose

VEGAPULS 81 on a surge pipe: The polarization direction is in line with the casting nose.
The sensor must be directed with the castin
nose to the rows of holes or openings

In case of good reflection conditions (liquids

without vessel installations) we recommend
you select the sensor distance so that there is
no vessel wall within the inner emission cone.
For liquids with worse reflection conditions it is
useful that there are also no interefering installations within the outer emission cone. Note
chapter 2.1 General installation instructions.

Foam generation
Wrong directing to the product surface
A directing of the sensor which does not point
to the product surface will cause a weak
measuring signal. If possible direct the sensor
axis vertically to the product surface, to reach
optimum measuring results.

Correct

Strong, dense and creamy foam on the product can cause faulty measurements. Provide
measures to avoid foam or measure in a bypass pipe. Check if necessary the use of
another measuring principle e.g. capacitive
electrodes or hydrostatic pressure transmitters.

Electrical connection

5 Electrical connection
5.1 Connection and connection
cable
Safety information
Ensure that the instrument is unpressurized
before you start work. Always switch off the
power supply before you carry out clamping
work on the radar sensors. Protect yourself
and the instruments.
Skilled staff
Instruments which are not operated with a
protective low voltage must only be connected
by skilled staff.

Connection
A standard two-wire cable can be used as
connection for the output signal. Very often the
electromagnetic pollution by electronic actuators, energy transmission and transmitting
stations is so considerable that the two-wire
cable for the output signals (digital or analogue) should be screened.

Ex-protection
If an instrument is used in hazardous areas,
the appropriate regulations, conformity certificates and type approvals for systems in Exareas must be noted (e.g. DIN 0165).
Intrinsically safe circuits with more than one
active facility (instrument delivering electrical
energy) must not be connected. Note the
special installation regulations (DIN 0165).

Connection cable
Note that the connection cable must be specified for the expected operating temperatures
in your systems.
Cables with intrinsically safe circuits must be
marked (blue) and must not be used for other
circuits.

We recommend to use a screening. This

screening prevents against future interferences. Earth the screen of the signal line always at one sensor side and use a low impedance earth connection (foundation, plate or
mains earth).

Set-up

6 Set-up
6.1 Adjustment structure
The radar sensors of VEGAPULS 64 and
VEGAPULS 81 series have no direct adjustment elements.
All radar sensors are generally adjusted with
the PC and the adjustment software VVO
(VEGA Visual Operating). The signal line of the
radar sensors is hence superimposed with a
digital adjustment signal.
Sensors with digital measuring data transmission (VBUS) can be adjusted beside the PC
also directly with the connected signal conditioning instrument VEGAMET 514 V or 515 V.

Note:
Always note the following sequence for the
set-up of a sensor:
- first create new measurement loop.
- then carry out the configuration and
parameter adjustment.
By creating a new measurement loop, the
sensor is activated. The sensor is set to the
parameter to be measured (level, distance)
and a measurement loop name can be provided. For sensors with digital output signal,
the sensor must be additionally co-ordinated
to an input of the signal conditioning instrument or an input of the processing system.

For adjustment, the PC is connected with the

standard RS 232-connection via the interface
converter VEGACONNECT to the measuring
system. VEGACONNECT is either connected
with the two-wire output to the sensor signal
line (e.g. on a connection socket), plugged
into the CONNECT-sockets at the front side of
the signal conditioning instrument or connected with the measuring signal terminals of
the sensor (VBUS-terminals).
Work with the processing system VEGALOG
571, connect the PC with the CPU of the
processing system directly to a RS 232-interface cable (standard cable).

Adjust with the signal conditioning instrument

The signal conditioning instruments are provided with a 6-key adjustment module with text
display. The adjustment module ensures like
the adjustment software VVO, the adjustment
of the signal conditioning instrument itself and
the adjustment of the radar sensor.

Before you start the set-up:

Do not be frightened by the many pictures,
adjustment steps and menus on the following
pages. Carry out the set-up step-by-step via
PC or signal conditioning instrument.

Adjustment with PC
Requirements:
- PC; IBM-compatible, with a free standard
interface, operating memory 4 MB.
- Program surface Windows (up from version
3.0)
- Adjustment software VVO (VEGA Visual
Operating)
- Interface converter VEGACONNECT or a
standard RS 232-interface cable (for measuring systems in conjunction with processing system VEGALOG 571).

6.2 Adjustment with PC

Connection
In the chapter 2.3 Configuration of measuring
systems the connection of the PC is shown in
different co-ordinations. The PC with the adjustment program VVO (VEGA Visual Operating) can be connected to the:
- sensor
- signal line
- signal conditioning instrument VEGAMET
514 V or 515 V
- processing system VEGALOG

Connection of the PC to a sensor

For connection of the PC to a sensor,
VEGACONNECT interface converter is required. Plug the VEGACONNECT into the
standard connection of the PC and connect
the two-wire line of VEGACONNECT either to
the signal output on the sensor (VEGAPULS
81) or (for instruments of VEGAPULS 64 series) to the provided CONNECT-socket in the
sensor.

Connection of the PC to a signal line

Connect the two-wire line of VEGACONNECT
to the signal output line of the sensors.

Note
A digital adjustment signal is superimposed to
the 0 20 mA signal output. Is the inner
resistor of the connected signal conditioning
instrument is less than 100 (e.g. with an
indicating instrument), the digital adjustment
signal is considerably damped. In this case
loop a load resistor R 100 into the signal
line to avoid the low impedance damping
during the adjustment.

Adjustment
The PC with the adjustment software VVO is
connected to the measuring system.
The individual adjustment and input steps are
described in the following (e.g. choose;
Start).
Switch on the power supply of the connected radar sensor.
Switch on the power supply of the connected signal conditioning instrument.
Start your PC and the adjustment software
VVO.
In the entrance screen choose with the shift
keys or with the mouse the point Planning
and push OK. The identification is enquired.

Connection of the PC to the signal conditioning instrument VEGAMET

Plug the two-wire line of VEGACONNECT into
the CONNECT-sockets on the signal conditioning instrument.

Connection of the PC to the processing

system VEGALOG
Connect the PC with the processing system

55

Set-up: Adjustment with PC

After entering the identification the program
gets in contact with the connected sensor and
signal conditioning instrument.

Under the menu User access the user name

and the password can be deleted and replace
by your own.

In the following set-up example, a signal conditioning instrument VEGAMET 515 V with two
sensors (VEGASON 83 FV and VEGAPULS
64 FV) are connected to a measurement loop.

Set-up steps with the PC

The set-up of a radar sensor with the PC requires first of all the creation of a measurement
loop and then the configuration of the sensor.

56

Create new measurement loop

Choose first the menu New.

Choose distance measurement or level

measurement and the measuring principle
(Pulse-Radar).

You now start to create a new measurement

loop.
Click the button Continue.
The following picture is used for further specification of the sensor/input. Input of information
in this picture is only necessary for pressure
transmitters.

VEGAPULS 64 and 81

Set-up: Adjustment with PC

Click again to Continue.

Click to Input .
The available sensor numbers for selection
and co-ordination to the input are offered.
Select the sensor which should be coordinated to the input.

The signal conditioning instrument VEGAMET

has two inputs. In the picture New application
select measuring loop you co-ordinate the
radar sensor to an input (TAG) in the connected signal conditioning instrument. The
inputs are called measuring loop 1 and measuring loop 2. However this is only required for
sensors with digital signal output.
Click to OK.
If a measurement loop is already created in
the signal conditioning instrument your are
informed that the existing measurement loop
will be overwritten.
The following data transmission lasts some
minutes.
Click to Sensor co-ordination.
You enter the menu Sensor co-ordination.

When you cross additional functions you have

the possibility, e.g. to co-ordinate to the input
of the actual signal conditioning instrument
also the input of the other signal conditioning
instrument.
It is hence possible, to process a sensor connected in another signal conditioning instrument in the actual signal conditioning instrument.
However you have co-ordinated the sensor
which is connected to the actual signal conditioning instrument also to the actual signal
conditioning instrument for processing which
is usual.
Confirm with OK and the input with the coordinated sensor number is displayed.
Confirm with OK.
Click to Continue .

VEGAPULS 64 and 81

57

Set-up: Adjustment with PC

Now the picture Create new measurement

Parameter adjustment
You have created a new measurement loop in
the previous chapter. Hence you have chosen
the measuring principle, co-ordinated the
sensor with its number to an input, to provide a
name for the measurement loop and if necessary determined by which outputs (current,
relay etc.) your measuring signal/sensor signal
should be processed.
Now the parameter adjustment for the sensor
must be carried out. Enter in the menu Parameter adjustment how the conditionings
and outputs will be configured, carry out the
adjustment and the sensor optimization.

Click to the button Distance .

Following the menus Adjustment and Sensor optimization are described. The other
parameter menus are described in the operating instructions of the signal conditioning
instruments VEGAMET 514 V or 515 V, as well
as the processing system VEGALOG 571 and
concern just the signal processing of your
measured value.
Choose the menu Instrument data/
Parameter adjustment .

Enter in the field Measurement loop description a measurement loop name.

In this menu you can chose with which output
signally your level should be processed, e.g.
as current, voltage, relay, circuit etc.
Confirm with OK .
The previous picture appears again.
Click to Quit.
The adjustments are transmitted, this lasts
some seconds.

When you chose the adjustment with measured product, you have to inform the sensor,
which level or which distance corresponds to
0% and 100%. If for full you have e.g. just filled
up to 94%, you can correct the percentage
value accordingly from 100% to 94%.
Choose adjustment without measured product
and you can determine what should be full
and what should be empty.
Choose no (adjustment without measured
product).
The following picture is a distance measurement, 0 % correspond to a distance to the
measured surface of 0.000 m. 100 % to a
distance of 6.000 m.
The measuring window of the sensor is hence
0 6 m.
Cho0se the distance which corresponds in
your application to 0 % and 100 %.

Data base check

When you get in contact with your measurement loops via the adjustment software VVO,
the adjustment program checks whether the
adjustments in the signal conditioning instrument or the sensor correspond with the adjustments of the adjustment software.
If e.g. after the set-up of a measurement loop
with the adjustment software (via PC) on the
signal conditioning instrument VEGAMET, an
adjustment had been modified, the following
information is displayed when connecting the
PC again with the measurement loop.

- With Load data from VEGAMET you take

over the complete adjustment of the measurement loop into the PC and the adjustment
software.
- With Transfer data to VEGAMET you
overwrite the adjustments of the measurement loop in the VEGAMET with the adjustments in the adjustment software VVO.

conditioning instrument
Sensors with digital output signal are connected with a two-wire cable to a signal conditioning instrument VEGAMET 514 V or 515 V or
to the processing system VEGALOG 571. Via
this two-wire line also the communication with
the sensor is transmitted beside the power
supply and the measuring signal.

In general the radar sensors are adjusted with

the PC and the adjustment software VVO.
Radar sensors with digital signal output however can be also adjusted with the adjustment
and indication module of the signal conditioning instruments VEGAMET 514 V or 515 V,
however not the sensors with 0 20 mAsignal output (compact instruments).

The adjust with the adjustment module the

Set-up: Adjustment with signal conditioning instrument

Adjustment steps with the signal conditioning instrument

You adjust the signal conditioning instrument
and the sensor with the six keys on the signal
conditioning instrument (; +; ; ; ESC; OK).
The basic set-up steps:
- First create a new measurement loop with
the menu Configuration / Configuration
measurement loop
- Then co-ordinate the sensor to an input of
the signal conditioning instrument in the
menu Configuration / Configuration inputs /
Input no.
- In the submenu Sensor optimization out of
the menu Configuration / Configuration
inputs you then carry out the configuration
and parameter adjustment of the sensor.
Hence the set-up of the radar sensor is carried
out. In the main menu Parameter adjustment
and in the menu Configuration / Configuration
outputs you choose how the sensor values
should be processed and provided. E.g. you
carry out the adjustment, the scaling, the
parameter adjustment, the current outputs or
the adjustment of the relay functions.

First set-up with the signal conditioning instrument

After you have connected the radar sensor (s)
with a screened two-wire cable to the signal
conditioning instrument VEGAMET 514 V or
515 V switch on the power supply for the signal conditioning instrument. The signal conditioning instrument powers then the sensor (s)
with energy.
Types C, D and E of VEGAPULS 81 series are
powered separately. Connect the sensors like
the signal conditioning instrument to the power
supply.
Fault signals
Normally you get fault signals. This is normal
for the first set-up. Hence carry out an instrument reset first before you create a measurement loop and you carry out the parameter
adjustment.

VEGAPULS 64 and 81

Reset
Carry out a reset first to provide a defined
instrument condition. Proceed acc. to the
following steps: Push the left key until in the
display (right) the appropriate indication appears. OKOK means that you have to push
OK until the requested indication appears in
the display.
Key:
