Abstract
Joyent, Inc. drives up cloud network performance with a unique virtualization
approach and Intel
Ethernet 10 Gigabit Server Adapters. Organizations increasingly place demanding performance requirements on cloud networks. Many
nd that using an external cloud service provider lets them take advantage of
established expertise to meet emerging technical requirements. Other customers
building their own cloud environments likewise stand to gain from the innovation of a vendor experienced in building cloud software, running cloud data
centers, and servicing private cloud infrastructures. Joyent, based in San Francisco and with locations all over the world, provides cloud computing products
and services for web-based segments such as social network gaming and realtime mobile applications. The company is unique in its combination of having
developed a cloud software stack, running a large public cloud based on it, and
oering its software to outside companies that want to build their own cloud
environments.

Case Study
1.1 Challange
Deliver high performance from cloud infrastructure while keeping equipment
costs and TCO as low as possible.
1.2 Solution
Joyent developed a novel OS-level virtualization approach that currently supports as many as 2,000 application tenants across ve physical hosts, and the
team thinks it likely that the system is capable of even more.1 The company
meets the intensive I/O requirements for this environment with Intel Ethernet
10 Gigabit Server Adapters.

Smart Technologies Architecture.
Joyent SmartMachines* pools physical resources such as processors and networkhardware so that each application directly accesses those resources through
the Joyent SmartOS*. In the Joyent cloud architecture, applications can dynamically reach additional hardware resources as needed, without the overhead of
spinning up another VM. Moreover, resource utilization is improved because
static assignment of resources on a per-VM basis is avoided, removing the need
for over-provisioning.

Joyent team is condent that they will be able to push that number even higher
in the future.
Joyent VP of engineering, notes that the high performance of the latest Intel
Xeon
processors is a huge asset, but Intel Ethernet 10 Gigabit Server Adapters
are at least as important a factor in obtaining high-performance cloud infrastructure. The company depends exclusively on Intel Ethernet 10 Gigabit Server
Adapters as it deploys new server hardware in its cloud environments to keep
up with the ability of modern processors such as the Intel
Xeon
processor
5600 series to push massive amounts of data. Contrill said, I love Intel's 10Gb
NICs. They perform well, and Intel gets it right standing behind them. That's
important because a lot of thorny issues can come up with these complex environments. Indeed, that type of condence is a key benet of Intel's oerings
across the board. From a day-to-day operational standpoint, Intel Ethernet 10
Gigabit Server Adapters provide a robust, forward-looking basis for network
connectivity of Joyent's cloud infrastructure: Supporting data-intensive appli-
cations with controllers that are designed in conjunction with the latest Intel
server platforms, including the Intel Xeon processor 5600 series, for highly optimized performance. Cutting network cost and complexity by consolidating as
many as six or eight GbE ports onto two 10GbE ports. Counting on mature,
stable drivers for Intel
Ethernet that help ensure trouble-free, dependable operation on the UNIX*-based Joyent SmartOS. Intel is the industry leader in
Ethernet controllers and adapters, with 30 years of experience. Intel Ethernet
10 Gigabit Server Adapters give cloud infrastructure based on Joyent Smart
Technologies access to high-performance networking with a well-earned reputation for dependability while cutting down on cabling and switch requirements.
The Forward-Looking Cloud: Low Latency for Data-Intensive, Real-Time Apps
Looking ahead, Joyent has aligned its roadmap and strategy with what it sees
as a newly emerging class of web applications. Usages such as social networkbased interactive gaming and real-time communication have the potential to
drive business needs for dataintensive handling of compute workloads with very
stringent latency requirements. Commodity clouds are not built to address this
type of usage model, and Joyent sees opportunity for providing very high quality
of service and low-latency cloud services.
automated systems demand timely delivery of every data packet, and latency or
loss of any signicant amount is unacceptable. Storage networking with mechanisms such as network-based storage or storage area networks based on Ethernet
must maintain low latency and lossless delivery.Too many breaches of timeliness
mean that the system or service is not capable of handling these applications'
core requirements to provide an acceptable user experience. Bringing together
a history of performance and stability with a future of continuing innovation,
Joyent is poised to help deliver the next generation of cloud infrastructure.

2.1 OVERVIEW
R
Eciency
and simplicity
Having fewer physical hosts in the data center creates a simpler topology
that can be more eectively managed.
Lower
capital costs
Buying smaller numbers of servers and cutting the requirements for the supporting infrastructure, such as switches, racks, and cables, potentially delivers
very large capital savings.
Reduced
operating expenses
Physical
were extended to virtual infrastructures, leading to the use of separate physical connections to segment trac and provide required bandwidth.
Previous
VMware versions
required a dedicated connection for virtual machines (VMs) and for each
of multiple trac types, such as VM trac, service console connections, IP
storage, VMware VMotion*, and so on.
Security
procedures
have often led network administrators to physically segregate trac onto separate ports since 802.1Q trunking to the host was not allowed and was reserved
for switchto- switch trac In many cases, hosts must have as many as eight or
more GbE network ports to satisfy these requirements. As shown in Figure 1,
several port groups are congured to support the various networking functions
and application groupings, and in turn each port group is supplied with one or
more physical connections. Virtual LAN (VLAN) tags may be implemented on
these port groups as well. This topology raises the following issues:
Complexity
and ineciency
Many physical ports and cables make the environment very complex, and
the large number of server adapters consumes a great deal of power.
Dicult
network management
The presence of eight to 12 ports per server makes the environment dicult
to manage and maintain, and multiple connections increase the likelihood of
misconguration.
Increased
risk of failure

This installation makes use of the VMware vNetwork Distributed Switch (vDS)
feature (see Best Practice 1). Using vDS provides the same basic functions as
standard virtual switches, but they exist across two or more clustered ESX or
ESXi hosts. Using a hybrid model of standard virtual switches and vDS allows
for management of the vDS if the switch fails and keeps service console trafc on a physically separate network connection.

connections.
The obvious advantage of the 10GbE solution is that it reduces the overall
physical connection count, simplifying infrastructure management considerations and the cable plant. Moving to a smaller number of physical ports reduces
the wiring complexity and the risk of driver incompatibility, which can help

Placing the service console network separate from the vDS can help avoid a
race condition and provides additional levels of redundancy and security.
ening Guide: ESX and Virtual Networking In general, VMware believes that
VLAN technology is mature enough that it can be considered a viable option
for providing network isolation. The following trac should be congured on
dedicated VLANs:
Service console should be on a dedicated port group with its own dedicated
VLAN ID; use port 2. An option to connect to a dedicated management network

that is not part of a vDS can provide additional benets but does add additional
network connections and network complexity.
VMotion should be on its own dedicated port group with its own dedicated
VLAN ID; use port 2 in a two-port conguration.
IP-based storage trac (iSCSI, NFS) should be on its own port group in
VM trac can use one or more VLANs, depending on the level of separa-

VLAN trunking provides the ability to combine multiple VLANs onto a single
wire. This capability makes the administration of VLANs more ecient because
the grouping can be managed as a unit over one physical wire and broken into
dedicated networks at the switch level instead of at each host.

primarily on port 1 and all other trac on port 2. This design uses the bandwidth of both 10GbE ports and can be congured in a redundant manner for
network failover. Note that, in the event of a failover, all trac would be travelling over the same wire.

that when properly implemented, VLANs provide a viable option for network
isolation.

to waste. On the other hand, handling the port group with bandwidth from a

the bandwidth headroom provided by the server adapter. The resource can be
automatically and dynamically reallocated as various port groups are accessed
by their associated VMs. Dedicated bandwidth is not needed for any one port
group as long as the host network connection never reaches saturation.
This
the viability of replacing multiple GbE ports with a pair of 10GbE ports in the
conguration mentioned in this paper. A number of VMs were installed on each
of two hosts, and the process of migrating all of the VMs on one host to the
other and back again was timed.
2.6 Conclusion
Using Intel Ethernet 10GbE Server Adapters in virtualized environments
based on VMware vSphere allows enterprises to reduce the complexity and cost
of network infrastructure. Advanced hardware and software technologies work
together to ensure that security and performance requirements can be met without the large numbers of physical server connections required in GbE legacy
networks. Additionally, more sophisticated management functionality is possible using 10GbE and VMware functionality features to replace methods that
depend on physical separation with updated approaches that use logical separation.
Because migration to 10GbE can dramatically reduce the number of physical server adapters needed for a given conguration, organizations can
realize a variety of cost advantages

14
Reducing the number of server adapters and switch ports being powered
in data centers can help to create substantial energy savings. In addition,
the ability to dynamically allocate bandwidth on demand increases exibility and enables organizations to get maximum value from their network
hardware. Therefore, 10GbE is superior to GbE as a connectivity technology for virtualized networks, and as future generations of data centers
continue to increase the demands placed on the infrastructure, the level
of that superiority is expected to increase.
Conclusion
Thus, I have study in this assignment overview of Intel Company with its objective. Also a case study and related white papers.
