Strengths

Leading management consulting firm with strong operational model

Bain is one of the world's leading management consulting firms. Bain has worked with majority of
the Global 500 companies; regional and local organizations; and several non-profits. The company
also offers its services to private equity funds which represent approximately 75% of the global equity
capital. The company also enjoys industry recognition across its various consulting practices.
According to industry estimates, in 2014, Bain was second to McKinsey as the leading consulting
firm, above its primary competitors including The Boston Consulting Group, PricewaterhouseCoopers
and Deloitte Consulting.
The company's emergence as one of the top consulting firms is backed by the value proposition
that the company offers to its clients. According to Bain, the company's consulting practice follows

SWOT Analysis

a practical approach which is not only unique compared to its peers but the success of this approach
is measured and quantified by the company. Bain's clients' stock prices outperform the market by
four to one. In addition, Bain-supported merger integrations on average generate 18% higher excess
shareholder returns; and Bain's performance improvement work produces yields worth more than
25 times the fees and margin improvements of 7% within two to three years. These results highlight
Bain's successful approach in consulting practice. In addition, Bain's unique Results Delivery approach
focuses on predicting, measuring and managing risk associated with a change. This approach
enabled the company's clients to realize results more consistently and predictably than their
competitors. The company also engages in various "tied economics" arrangements with its clients.
Through this approach, Bain often takes equity in lieu to ensure alignment between a client's goals
and the company's work. This allows the company to better align its financial incentives with client
outcomes. All these various methods enabled Bain to create an operational model that propelled
the company to become a top-league consulting firm.
Bain is among the leading consulting firms and enjoys strong brand recognition. The company also
has an established operational model that offers a strong value proposition for its clients. This
operational model is a competitive advantage which supports the company's current market position.
Leader in the private equity consulting practice
The company has a well-established private equity consulting practice. Bain is the leading consulting
partner to the private equity industry and its key stakeholders. According to the company, in the past
decade, Bain advised on half of all buyout transactions valued at more than $500 million globally.
In addition, the company works with buyout funds that represent 75% of global equity capital.
Moreover, Bain's private equity consulting practice is more than three times larger than that of the
next-largest consulting firm serving private equity funds. Owing to its depth in service offerings, Bain
is one of the few management consulting firms that have the capabilities to offer a wide range of
private equity consulting solutions. The company supports its clients across a broad range of
objectives such as deal generation, due diligence, portfolio value creation, exit planning, private
equity firm strategy and operations, and institutional investor strategy. Bain maintains a broad network
of more than 1,000 experienced professionals serving private equity clients and institutional investor
clients. Bain works globally across all major sectors, from consumer products and financial services
to technology and industrial goods.
While the company has strong market position across the consulting market, it is a leader in the
private equity consulting practice. The company's favorable competitive position in the private equity
space will enable it to effectively exploit the growth prospects in this market.
Expertise across multiple industries and wide geographic presence
Bain has extensive experience across multiple industries. Over the years, the company has gradually
developed broad expertise in offering consulting services for various industries, including airlines
and transportation, consumer products, financial services, healthcare, industrial goods and services,
media, metals and mining, oil and gas, private equity, retail, social and public sector, technology,
telecommunications, and utilities and alternative energy. The expertise developed across multiple

sectors, industries and areas enables sustainable growth for the company. In addition, the company
has a wide geographic presence. Bain has strategically expanded its presence across the globe
and currently operates through 51 offices in 33 countries and enjoys a strong presence in high growth
developing and emerging markets. The company has a strong global position, with its base in mature
markets such as the Americas and Europe. It has also expanded significantly in emerging markets
such as India, China, and other emerging Asian markets.
Expertise across multiple industries coupled with wide geographic presence provides the company
with significant competitive advantages and strengthens its business reach. Also, Bain's end market
diversification and geographical footprint enhances its ability to offer integrated services which will
enable it to drive growth in the revenue generated per customer.

Weaknesses

Challenging competitive environment for a pure-play consulting firm

Bain, being a pure-play consulting firm, is witnessing significant challenges as it competes with well
diversified peers. Some of its competitors such as PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and Deloitte are
very large and have diversified product portfolio. PwC has operations in 157 countries around the
world. In addition to consulting services, PwC offers services in financial accounting issues related
to matters such as valuations, pensions and share plans, and listings. Through its human resource
(HR) services practice, PwC focuses on international assignments, HR management and rewards.
It also offers project-based legal advice and general counsel covering all legal domains. Similarly,
Deloitte also operates in more than 150 countries. Deloitte's portfolio of offerings includes audit,
consulting, financial advisory, risk management, tax and related services.
In addition to these players, several IT giants such as IBM and Accenture have also successfully
established consulting practice. These set of competitors are strong players and well poised to
bundle consulting with other services. Specifically, the technology companies are likely to emerge
as strong competitors. As technology becomes all pervasive, some of the roles hitherto performed
by consulting firms such as Bain are losing relevance. In such a back drop, the newly emerging
competitors have the potential to capture Bain's clients. For instance, PwC and Deloitte work with
large clients and are poised to serve the same clients for consulting requirements. Bain suffers a
competitive disadvantage as the consulting industry continues to accommodate competitors from
other domains which will erode its competitive advantages. These players have the potential to offer
part of consulting services that were previously offered by Bain owing to their existing customer
relationships. Further, they also have the potential to impact Bain's pricing ability negatively. Therefore,
Bain's position as a pure-play consulting firm renders the company at a competitive disadvantage
as the competition emerges and the company will compete with large and well diversified rivals.

Opportunities

Bain & Company, Inc.

MarketLine

Page 15

Bain & Company, Inc.

SWOT Analysis

Opportunities from rapidly growing emerging markets

The emerging markets are expected to record strong growth in the near future. Despite the global
economic slowdown and recession in advanced economies, the emerging economies continued to
maintain growth. According to industry estimates, the emerging markets and developing economies
are forecasted to increase their contribution to global commerce and consumption. This can be
perceived by the growth prospects for emerging markets. According to the International Monetary
Fund (IMF), the emerging and developing economies' real gross domestic product (GDP) is expected
to grow at 5.3% in 2015. Comparatively, the advanced economies are expected to grow at 2.3%
during 2015. The growth in the emerging markets is expected to be driven by China, India, and other
emerging Asian economies. Positive outlook for emerging markets provides growth opportunities
for various businesses. Moreover, in recent years, most of the companies in emerging markets
continued to pursue global practices in their operations. Bain being one of the major players in the
management consulting market is in a position to capitalize on growth opportunities in providing
services for companies in emerging markets as well as companies established in advanced economies
pursuing growth prospects in these high growth markets.
Positive outlook for non-IT end markets drives demand for consulting services
Some of the company's non-IT end markets returned to growth trajectories in 2011. Healthcare, oil
and gas, and pharmaceutical markets are forecast to show a steady growth. The US healthcare
sector is expected to grow at a robust pace in medium to long term. According to MarketLine (a unit
of Informa) the global healthcare providers market is expected to increase from $7,542.5 billion in
2014 to $9,608.5 billion in 2018 growing at a CAGR of 6% for 2014-18 periods. Also the global
pharmaceutical market is expected to increase from $843.4 billion in 2014 to $1,024.5 billion in 2018
growing at a CAGR of 5% for the 2014-18 periods.
Bain offers consulting services across multiple industries, including healthcare, metals and mining,
oil and gas, retail, social and public sector, technology, telecommunications, and utilities and
alternative energy, among others. Positive growth in healthcare, oil and gas, and pharmaceutical
end markets enhances the demand for the company's consulting services.
Robust outlook for global management and marketing consultancy
The outlook for management and marketing consultancy services is robust globally. According to
MarketLine (a unit of Informa), the global management and marketing consultancy market grew by
7.7% in 2014 to reach a value of $339.9 billion. Further, the performance of the market is forecasted
to remain healthy, with an anticipated CAGR of 6.3% for the four-year period 2014-19, which is
expected to drive the market to a value of $462.1 billion by the end of 2019. Bain is one of the leading
and established players in the market. The positive outlook for the global management and marketing
consultancy market coupled with Bain's strong presence in this market will enhance its top line
growth in the coming years.

Threats

Bain & Company, Inc.

MarketLine

Page 16

Bain & Company, Inc.

SWOT Analysis

Weak economic recovery in key European countries

According to IMF, Europe in general is still facing a gradual and uneven economic recovery. According
to the IMF, the GDP growth rates in the Euro area were 1.2% in 2014. Outside the Euro zone, the
IMF recorded the growth of the UK as 2.9% in 2014 and is expected to decelerate to 2.5% in 2015.
Furthermore, the GDP of Germany and France are expected to be sluggish at 1% in 2015. Also,
Italy and Spain are expected to grow by 0.9% in 2015. Similar growth rates are projected in economies
such as Denmark, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Greece, Ireland and
Portugal. These economies are engulfed in deep sovereign debt crises. High debt, both public and
private, and financial fragmentation are further expected to hold back domestic demand.
Owing to all the above factors, the recovery in Euro zone is likely to remain weak which could
decrease the demand for management consulting services. Weak economic growth could lead to a
rapidly rising rate of bankruptcies amongst companies of all sizes and higher unemployment in Euro
zone. The weak economic outlook in key European countries is expected to impact the growth of
the company and negatively affect its financial position.
Emergence of in-house consulting units
In the recent years, there has been a global trend to entrust corporate in-house consulting units with
core management consultancy tasks. Following the global recession, several companies around
the world have focused on cost reduction activities, which resulted in the emergence of these in-house
consulting units. In-house consulting has established itself as an alternative to external management
consultancies. These units are organized as independent subsidiaries or as corporate service units
in large companies globally. In-house consulting is growing and consequently, the demand for internal
consultants has grown in strategic and operational projects. In addition, in-house consulting units
are expected to have several advantages as compared to external consulting firms. For instance,
the consultants within these units would be familiar with the company and its processes and are
well-connected internally. This is expected to ensure quick solutions geared towards the company's
needs.
Emergence of these in-house consulting units could impact the consulting industry and reduce the
demand for Bain's products and services in coming years.
