Re: Burmese activists in exile urge the Government of India to release 26 Burmese activists

Honorable Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh,

We are writing you in response to the arrest of 72 Burmese nationals by New Delhi Police, including a Buddhist
monk and five women, who were protesting in front of Burmese Embassy in New Delhi on March 19, 2010. We,
Burmese democracy activists from the United States and Burmese-American community members strongly urge you
to take necessary actions to release these detained Burmese activists immediately and unconditionally.

The activists were arrested while protesting against the recent sham electoral laws announced by the Burmese
military junta for their planned elections this year. They were also demanding the release of Nobel Peace Laureate
Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and all Burma’s political prisoners from their unlawful detentions, demanding a
constructive review of the junta’s sham 2008 Constitution, calling for free, fair and credible election and urging the
United Nations Security Council to launch a Commission of Inquiry to investigate war crimes and crimes against
humanity committed by the Burmese military junta.

We regrettably learned today that twenty six Burmese activists, including five women, were charged by the Delhi
police with various objectionable crimes for exercising their fundamental freedom and human rights. According to
the Irrawaddy news, their case will be decided on March 23, 2010 in New Delhi’s Partiala Court. We are gravely
concerned for their well-being in the event that they are to be deported back to Burma where they could face severe
torture and brutal persecution by the Burma’s Military regime.

We are extremely disturbed by the arrest of, and charges to, these Burmese activists. We strongly believe that these
activists in India were expressing the hardship, the dire situation and injustice suffered by their fellow Burma
citizens at the hands of the brutal Burmese military regime. Meanwhile, the regime is shamefully building a long-
standing repressive dictatorship bordering your country, which is the largest democratic country in the world.

We again respectfully urge you to consider the release of 26 Burmese activists immediately. We also request your
continued support for the Burma Democracy Movement which based on the democratic philosophies that will bring
a real sustainable change to Burma and will benefit and strengthen our region as a whole.
