HYDER UK NEWS
SPOTLIGHT ON
SR3C... An added string to our bow
An interview with Gareth Davis, Associate Business Director, SR3C
What does SR3C stand for?
Safety Reliability Risk Radiological Consultants you can see
why we use the acronym!

How was SR3C formed?

SR 3C was formed in 2003 by all four of the current Technical
Directors who were working as independent safety consultants
at the time, supporting a range of nuclear clients. The team
first worked together on projects supporting Babcock Marine
at Devonport and recognised the opportunity to combine their
skills to provide more value to their clients, rather than acting
through intermediary organisations.

operating stations and new build), and decommissioning.

Furthermore, we provide safety and environmental consultancy
to the MoD, with a strong pedigree in the maritime sector. It is
this wide-ranging experience and capability, coupled with our
ability to be flexible in our approach to supporting our clients,
that enables us to stand out from the larger consultancies.

How do you see this linking in with Hyder?

We believe our range of capabilities and market position
can help Hyder develop further into the nuclear and defence
sectors. This is already paying dividends as we have submitted
a number of joint proposals to EDF, LLWR and the MoD covering
both safety and environmental support.

What is your USP?

How do you see Hyder linking in with SR3C?

We have a balance of highly experienced personnel and junior

consultants whom we have developed in the company since they
left university. Our senior personnel have worked with all of the
major UK nuclear site licensees across fuel production, defencerelated new build projects, civil power generation (current

Being part of Hyder offers us the chance to not only utilise the
wider technical capabilities, but also the support functions of
the group. This will enhance our ability to position ourselves
within the marketplace while also offering our personnel wider
opportunities for development.

Gareth Davis

How have you found Hyder so far?

So far there has been very little disruption to our way of working
and weve been impressed that there isnt a big corporate
machine feel to Hyder. Within one month, weve won two
opportunities that we wouldnt have normally had the chance
to bid for and are bidding on a number of other packages of
work. Were also looking at using wider Hyder skills to bolster
our current offerings, so this is already proving to be a mutually
beneficial relationship.
Gareth and his colleagues from SR 3C will be visiting offices
in thecoming weeks to explain about their business and how
wecan work together. Watchthe intranet for the timetable and
a presentation near you.

ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT NEWS

New Gloucester Services

Hyder makes ecological contribution to community-friendly service station
On 7 May 2014, a new service station opened up on the busy M5 motorway in Gloucestershire
northbound between Junction 11a and 12. Far from your average services, the new eco-friendly
pit-stop for road users is a showcase for organic snacks and artisanal products, and is dedicated
to serving the local community as much as its travelling customers.
Hyders own ecologists, based in the Stroud office, completed the initial ecological appraisal of
the site in February 2008, and carried out further ecology surveys (for bats, and great crested
newts) between May and September of the same year. The ecological work on the site was
fundamental to the project, as the site borders an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB),
and therefore mitigating the impact on the environment was of particular importance.
Gloucester Services is currently owned and operated by family firm Westmorland Motorway
Services Ltd in partnership with the Gloucestershire Gateway Trust. Westmorland is also the
driving force behind the award-winning Tebay services in Cumbria. The new services carry the
same unique and eco-friendly ethos as Tebay, and are proving to have a similar, if not heightened,
success rate.

Pump Centre Conference and Exhibition

An excellent event
The Pump Centre held its annual flagship conference and exhibition at
the International Centre, Telford, on 30 April 2014. The main theme of
theconference this year was, The Future of Fit for Purpose Pumping.
It was predominantly but not exclusively a water industry event, and involves
thewhole water industry supply chain, attracting principal and senior engineers
from a wide range of leading contractors and manufacturers.
Four members of staff from the Utilities sector, Anthony Hitchen, NigelDickenson,
Jermaine Bernard, and Dan Tonks, attended the event and operated a Hyder
stand. It was the only engineering consultancy stand present at the event,
andreportedly many of the 800 attendees of the exhibition stopped by to find
out more about Hyder and the work we do.

HA flagship project
The Lower Thames Crossing is a flagship project of the HA to ink the counties of Kent and Essex. It is an important win for theteam
and reaffirms Hyders relationship with theDepartment for Transport.
The Highways team will lead the development of a preferred
option with support from a multidisciplinary team including
transport planning, environment, ecology, structures, tunnels,
and the supporting disciplines. The options being considered
include improving the existing crossing and connecting the M2
inKent with the A13 and M25 in Essex.
Our work on this project will put us in a strong position for the next
stage which will include preliminary design. Hyder has a long history
of working on the crossings, including the Dartford Free Flow project
opening in October 2014; barriers at the Dartford Crossing will be
removed to improve congestion, andmotorists will be charged via
number-plate recognition cameras.

Cross-continental collaboration
Communication is critical to effective project management
When Project Manager Pawel Krzyzowski noticed the Paddington New Yard programme was
slipping, he took evasive action. He assigned Anastasia Salemi, a graduate civil and structural
engineer, based in York, and Ravi Kancherla, a CAD Team Leader and Health and Safety Adviser
inBangalore, toget the project back on track. Thanks to their great communication skills and
going the extra mile, within two weeks, they succeeded in their challenge.
Every project is at risk of going off plan, especially when delivery deadlines
are tight, and Paddington New Yard was no exception. Thewhole project is
separated into design packages, each with its own design, documentation
and checking process. Anastasia and Rav i worked closely ever y day
to ensure that the work was flowing seamlessly between the York and
Bangalore teams.

Anastasia Salemi

Anastasia explained: Pawel was clear about what we needed to achieve and we both made
apersonal commitment to making sure our teams delivered, even if that meant we both had to
stay a bit later, or get in a bit earlier. We actually made the time difference work to our advantage.
Plus, we kept a good sense of humour at all times.
According to Ravi: There will always be challenges to working in different
offices, especially across time zones, but the more closely we work together,
thefewer challenges we have to overcome. We have Lync calls daily to discuss
the progress and deliverables for that day and week. We didnt assume
anything. Even the small details, wed have a Lync call to discuss them.
Itensured better quality and allowed us to meet our challenge.

UTILITIES NEWS

Making a splash
A new era for the UK Utilities sector
Simon Bradley

Since Simon Bradley came on board as the

Managing Director for Utilities, the sector
has been in the process of a transformation.
According to Simon: I feel like I have a clean
canvas to create a really winning proposition
that appeals to our client s and a strong
business our people are proud to be part of.
In my first 100 days, Ivelistened to peoples
ideas and feedback, and used these to come up
with a strategy that would take us confidently
into the future.
The strategy needed to revolve around Hyders
three tenet s: key account management,
market back pricing and working with the GEC.

I really believe these elements dovetail.

When we build relationships with our clients,
and understand what drives their business,
wecan deliver what they want, and win work.
When we understand the market and what the
going rate is for the service we provide, wecan
price our work competitively. Be under no
illusions - the competition within our market
is fierce. Thepoliticians may be saying that
our economy is turning around, but clients are
still weary to part with their cash. They are
looking for value for money at every turn.

I believe we are very fortunate to be working

with our GEC. Theirlevel of technical expertise
and the degree to which they care for their work
enables us to offer high standards of excellence
at competitive rates and in some cases
extend our capability outside what is currently
available in the UK. The more we work together
the more success we will have. Im looking
forward to my visit later in the year.
One of my favourite quotes is: Leadership
is action, not position. This year, we have a
number of good opportunities in the pipeline.
We are placing a greater emphasis on sales
and seeking opportunities for growth, bothin

the UK and the Middle East, where we have

expertise that they need. With the help of the
Utilities SMT, I have developed a pragmatic
plan for our business which I know, together,
we can deliver.

A Handley Challenge

All systems go!

Utilities Graduate Alasdair inspires the next generation

With the contracts signed, the Utilities team

is all set to kick start work with Skanska
on projects that will focus largely on asset
management.
During the first four AMP periods, water
companies business plans were dominated
by the need to meet tough European Union
legislation covering issues like wastewater
quality and wildlife habitats. The focus was
on building new facilities, including treatment
works, interceptor sewers and outfalls that
would contribute to cleaning up wastewater
discharge.

The AMP5 regulatory period saw the start

of a shift that is continuing into AMP6 and
beyond - water companies trying to get the
most out of their existing assets and finding
ways tominimise total operational costs.
Ofwat recently encouraged water companies
tofocus on long term outcomes, which it hopes
will encourage innovative ways ofworking that
will deliver services for less money, and with
less impact on the environment and encourage
companies to manage water supplies more
sustainably.

Alasdair Handley, a Graduate Engineer

in the Utilities sector, helped run last
years Institute of Civil Engineers yearly
E n g i n e e r i n g Te a m C h a l le n g e ( E T C ) ,
a competition put on by the ICE for over
a decade to encourage Year 9 students to
consider a career in engineering.
Alasdair snapped up the role of Challenge
Coordinator. His team was to build an
earthquake proof tower out of spaghetti and
marshmallows, and then test thetower on a
shaking plate.

The event was a huge

success. Alasdair said:
For me, the highlight
was the response
and enthusiasm of
the children. At the
start, we asked for a
show of hands to see
who wanted to be an Alasdair Handley
engineer and who knew what a civil engineer
was. When we asked the same questions
at the end of the day, the response was
incredible!

Working with the ETC organisers to ensure

all activities were well coordinated, Alasdair
prepared the presentations and instruction
transcr ipts for the entire challenge.
Theevents took place at Cardiff University,
Swansea University, University of Wales Trinity
Saint David, and the University of South Wales
and were attended by over 500 students.

Technical Excellence
Back to Basics

Hyder is recognised and respected for our technical excellence and expertise and every now and
again, its best practice to remind ourselves of the basics.
To that end, Andrew Nairne has identified 10 Steps to Technical Excellence. Check them out on
the Professional Board Sharepoint Site for easy access. In the meantime, if you have a technical
query, a suggestion on how we could improve the technical quality of our work, or a nugget of best
practice to share, please contact Andrew or a Technical Director in your local office.

Ground Engineering Award Finalist

Geotechnical team readies finalist of prestigious competition
The seventh annual Ground
Engineering Awards were held this
year on 14 May at the Grosvenor
House Hotel in London. Technical
Director Gr ahame Bunce was in
attendance following the submission
that he and Ali Wiles, from the
HyderWSP Geo-tech team, submitted
on London Bridge Station for the UK
Project with a Geotechnical Value
over 3M category.

It outlined the complexity of the

geotechnical design for this particular
project , specifically t he access
and working restr ictions the
engineers had to content with whilst
conducting piling activities within
the arch structures. Thesubmission
was voted by the judges as a finalist
in the category, butsadly did not win.
However, the team received excellent
feedback from the judges, with one

noting the degree of complexity

within constrained conditions.
It is clear there was a good
collaborat ive approach to the
design, and some innovation in the
selection of means and methods to
allow work in the arches.

SPOTLIGHT ON

HYDERISE YOUR HOLIDAYS

As you plan your get-aways this summer, why not check out some of Hyders great projects at the same time?
Below are just a few interesting examples of where Hyder is contributing to our local environment
Bike Park Wales, Gethin Woods,
Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales

Stirling, Scotland
Hyder recently designed an urgent bridge replacement in central
Stirling. Complications arose prior to construction, when it was
discovered that the site was near by of the famous 13 th century
Battle of Stirling Bridge. Permission was eventually granted by
Stirling Council.

Hyder cont r ibuted t o t his World Cl ass

mountain biking facility, acting on behalf of
the Forestry Commission to seek tenders from
specialist recreation park designers who had
the experience to deliver.

The city oozes history. Places to visit include Stirling Castle,

home of Mary Queen of Scots, Bannockburn Heritage Centre,
thesite of the battle between William Wallace and King Robert
the Bruce in 1314 and the National Wallace Monument.

BikePark Wales is the UKs f irst full scale

mountain bike park, w ith trails from the
serene to the extreme, providing an option for
any ability. If you dont have your own kit, the
on-site shop makes it easy for you to rent or
purchase the gear when you arrive.

Swansea Bay, Wales

Manchester

Swansea Bay will soon be home to a tidal energy lagoon

because of its large tidal range - thedistinguishing
feature of the Bay - to generate renewable energy with
a rated capacity of 240 MW. Hyder is currently working
on the environmental aspect of the project, and will
be producing a Habitats Regulations Assessment
(HRA) due to the potential presence of, and effect on,
mobile qualifying species (fish and birds).

Over the years, Manchester Victoria Station became very run

down, but thanks to a major redevelopment project, known as the
Northern Hub, it will soon become a gateway to the North. Hyder
is currently designing the major transport interchange with three
interlinking elements: a tram operated by Transport for Greater
Manchester, a train station operated by Network Rail and the
Manchester Arena managed by SMG Europe.
A stunning feature of the station will be the huge
ETFE roof that is large enough to house an Airbus
380. The original 1844 roof was designed by
Hyders own Charles Fox and was described as the
largest roof in the Kingdom. Well worth a visit!

Swansea is Wales Waterfront City with its 5mile

Swansea Bay beach. The different beaches within
Swansea Bay, each with their own name, offer a
variety of activities. Aberavon Beach is popular with
surfers due to its high breaker waves. Mumbles Beach,
which sits neatly between Swansea and Bracelet Bay,
is buzzing in the summer. Just around the corner from
the Mumbles is the Gower Peninsula, the UKs first
Area ofOutstanding Natural Beauty in 1956.

Suffolk Coast, Suffolk

Salcombe, Devon

Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London

Previously home to Londons 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games,
theQueen Elizabeth Olympic Park is overflowing with family friendly
activities. The London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC) isleading
the transformation of the former Olympic Park to include beautiful
parklands, waterways, world-class sporting venues, arts and events. Hyder
worked with LLDCs predecessor, the Olympic Delivery Authoritys Planning
Decisions Team (ODA PDT), in the run-up to the London 2012 Olympics and
now advises on the environmental impact and transport planning.

Hyder recently undertook structural improvements of Salcombe

Fish Quay, to create a new quay wall whilst securing the prevalent
structure, thus maintaining the shellfish industry within
Salcombe, worth 2.2m to the local economy. The team, led by
Patrick Valvona, created a complex 3D model of the quay structure
to optimise design whilst minimising the environmental impact.
The town of Salcombe offers just about everything you want from
a bustling seaside metropolis: fresh, locally sourced shellfish for
your evening meal; sandy beaches, with rock pools for the children
and an abundance of water sports for adventurous types.

Check out the stunning views

over the park and across
Londons famous skyline from
the 375ft-high ArcelorMittal
Orbit tower. If you fancy
something a little closer to
the ground, there is plenty
to explore in the 560 acres of
parkland, including cycling
and art trails, as well as the
child-friendly Tumbling Bay
Playground.

Located to the south of the Suf folk Coast

National Nature reserve is the current Sizewell
A and B nuclear power st at ions, and the
proposed site for Sizewell C. Hyder is the
ecology consultant producing Stage 1 and
2 consult at ion doc ument at ions and t he
Environmental Statement.
The Suffolk Coast is populated by quaint seaside
towns and loads of wildlife, including otters,
deer, natterjack toads, and over 280 recorded
bird species.
On the Suffolk Coastline, youll find the seaside
town of Aldeburgh, home to the iconic beach
sculpture, TheScallop, by famous artist Maggi
Hambling CBE, not to mention the best fish and
chip shop in the country.

Training our future leaders
Hyder UKs ASDP
During three days in June, five of Hyder UKs future leaders went on an intensive training
course in Dubai, having applied for and been accepted onto the Accelerated Skills Development
Programme. Open to employees from all regions, the ASDP provides highly motivated
individuals with the opportunity to develop their management and leadership skills. Principal
Utilities Engineers Clare Bursnoll and Matt Coombs were joined by Regional Reporting Manager
Matt Dowers, Principal Archaeologist in Environment Jenny Wylie and Principal Structural
Utilities Engineer Carlos De Freitas.
The course began bright and early on Monday morning with a workshop with Ivor Catto
about Hyders global strategy, followed by an afternoon session on Middle East operations
from Country Manager and Regional Marketing Director Caroline OHalloran. The second
and third days consisted of challenging training sessions focused on competency building
and development in areas such as problem solving, client and stakeholder management,
andbuilding relationships.
Whilst there was no time programmed in for sightseeing, the UK ASDPers independently
arranged to visit, and experience, the infamous Burj Khalifa. When travelling from the airport
to the hotel it was pointed out how many Hyder buildings and structures they passed, further
emphasising Hyders presence in the region.

HYDER UK NEWS
Professional Board Bulletin
Balance brings benefits
The Professional Board recognises that balanced businesses spark innovation, drive development and produce better results. As such, it supports Hyders Leadership, Equality and Progression initiative.

Im currently working on a range of

projects at the moment, the largest
being the Env ironmental Impact
Assessment for the River Humber
Gas Pipeline Replacement Project.
I am al so on a secondment to
National Grid as a Contract Consents
Officer that requires me to manage the consents process
for multiple projects including Overhead Lines, cables and
substations.
The most technically engaging project Ive worked on
is the A487 Porthmadog bypass, a detailed design and
construction project that included the deliver y of an
effective and robust environmental design within a highly
constrained and designated environment all within a
tight timescale.
Top t ip: The abilit y to negot iate ef fect ively w ith all
stakeholders to produce the desired result (on this project,
the designs for infrastructure such as a new environmental
overbridge by the agreed timescales) was critical.

Im currently working on two small

Sewage Treatment Works upgrades
and the early investigation stage
of the Plymouth Bathing Waters
scheme to improve the overall
quality of the bathing water.
Working on a Magnox nuclear decommissioning scheme
in 2012 has been one of my most engaging projects.
We prov ided the c iv il s suppor t and had to design
thepipework and infrastructure to support a major part
of the decommissioning process. The pipework was double
contained and one pipe in particular contained nuclear fuel
element debris which needed to be transferred to 200m
toanother part of the plant.
Lessons learnt: A) Make sure the br ief/scope and
responsibilities are clear at the outset and if not, develop
and agree with the client asap. B) dont expect to have all
of the answers but know to speak to other experienced
engineers to discuss thoughts and where to find expertise.

Cross cultural awareness

Im currently work ing on three

projects: the design of a new 100m3
storage tank and possible upgrade
of the existing pumping station to
facilitate the connection of 350
new dwellings in Ottery St Mary; the
design of a new surface water sewer
diversion to serve an existing development, and on site
investigations in Perranporth to reduce flooding in the area.
My most technically engaging project to date was the design
of two sewage storage tanks in Liskeard for South West
Waters (SWW) AMP5 Bathing Waters Scheme. Theobjective
of the scheme was to ensure that SWW met their obligations
under their AMP5 programme and to satisfy the environment
Agencys requirements in respect of effluent discharges
into the East Looe Bathing Waters.
Tip tip: Ideas make the project. Bring something to the
table and never be afraid to speak up.

HYDER UK - CHARITY NEWS

New financial year,
new charities!

Cawleys colourful
fundraising

As you will know already, Hyder has two new sponsored charities for the 2014/15
financial year; Alzheimers Research UK and the British Lung Foundation!
Wereless than four months into our official fundraising for the charities and
already lots of cake sales, Easter egg raffles and extreme challenges have taken
place!

On the 29 May it was announced that thousands of families living and

working on the Smokey Mountain dumpsite in Manila were being evicted,
andthe PCF clinic demolished.
Senior Ecologist Laura Cawley took action and signed up for one of the eight
available spaces PCF had in The Colour Run in London on Sunday 1 June.
She said: I first got involved with PCF last year when I helped organise the
Twelve Days of Christmas Campaign. With two young children of my own,
the work they do to support some of the poorest children and families in the
Philippines resonated very deeply with me.

Keep your eyes peeled for the charity events calendar that will be in all
UKoffices soon, detailing all sorts of events coming up over the next couple
of months that you can get involved with, such as the Great London Swim on
30August, the Tough Mudder Northwest on 13 -14 September, and the Pyrenees
Snow Shoe Challenge on 3 February 2015! Watch this space!

The Colour Run, billed as the happiest 5k on the planet, is a five kilometre,
un-timed race, where thousands of participants are doused from head
to toe in different colours at each kilometre. Through her great efforts,
Laurahas managed to raise over 600 for PCF, which will help towards the
current crisis in Manila. Congratulations, Laura!

To share any ideas or for more information contact Bethany Gent or Malia Brown.

Commonwealth Chess
Championship Challenge
Senior Planning Engineer in PCS, Steven Brown, represented his country recently in the 2014
Commonwealth Chess Championships. Steven, who has played chess since the age of 14,
wasjoined by competitors from around the globe in Glasgow from 30 June to 8 July.
Steven explains his motivation for entering this year: The main reason I entered the tournament was
because it is being held in Glasgow. I consider myself as an amateur who has occasionally won some
tournaments, but there are few chances to play in such an event in the city where you were born.
Steven was sure to do some preparation before the tournament began by scrutinising the top players games,
most of which are published online. Although Steven didnt win, he had this to say of the competition: It was
an absolutely amazing experience to take part and meet, and play chess with, so many people from all over
the world. The games themselves were challenging - the shortest one that I played was 3 and hours but
Ithoroughly enjoyed myself throughout the competition. Congratulations, Steven!

Skydive success
Three Peaks Challenge Team

In the first three months of fundraising for our two new charities, staff at Hyder have already gone above and beyond
toshow their enthusiasm for taking part in extreme fundraising challenges. These are Going the distance for
Alzheimers Wales Three Peaks challenge, Phil Ramskills Leeds half-marathon, and Dan De La Heys 100 mile run from
Richmond, London, to Oxford.

Phil Ramskill and his daughter

Going the distance for Alzheimers, a team of six Highways engineers from the
Birmingham office, took on the three highest peaks in Wales in just 24 hours, raising just
under 1,000. After spending the night nearest the first peak (Pen yFan), the team arose
on the Saturday morning at 2:00am to begin their ascension around 3:30am. Assistant
Bridge Engineer Rob said: A couple of us found the first hill a shock to the system,
butmanaged Cadair Idris much better. Theysuccessfully made it to the top and back of
Pen y Fan, Cadair Idris, and Snowdon. Congratulations to the whole team!

ESR Associate Business Director Phil Ramskill ran the Leeds half-marathon on May 11 with
his daughter in aid of Alzheimers Research UK. Phil and his daughter smashed their 100
fundraising target by an additional 285. Three cheers for the Ramskills!
On May 3, Bristol-based Ecologist Dan De La Hey took on the mammoth Thames Path
100mile challenge, running from London to Oxford, for two charities: Alzheimers
Research UK, and the Piers Simon Appeal. The run, which is the equivalent of just
under four marathons, has to be completed in less than 28 hours for it to be legitimate,
and usually only attracts around 300 competitors per year. He raised over 1,000 in
fundraising for his fantastic efforts. Well done, Dan!

Teodora Banci

Teodora Banci, Facilities Co-ordinator in the London office, decided to take part in
the annual Young Epilepsy skydive day on 30 March 2014. Teodora had previously
taken part in the gardening away days at the Young Epilepsy educational centres,
