T RAGEDY ON S TATIA

SVB, the health insurance company, made this mistake. 
SVB has a policy to discourage people to go to the hospi‐
tal during Carnival time or Christmas time, because in 
the past, people took advantage of the SVB, more peop‐
le happened to fall ill during these periods, just to have 
an airplane ticket for Christmas shopping or to celebrate 
the Carnival.  
 
While Curacao and Bonaire were having Carnival, a 
young man died here on Statia. SVB did not let him tra‐
vel to the hospital in Curacao.  
 
The island is in mourning, because it was a special young 
man. Shirland Schrewhardt had Down‘s syndrome and 
with that, he found his place in our society. He was well 
loved. Looking at him and the way his family and friends 
treated him, love, tolerance and brotherhood looked 
back at you. He is missed by all. His funeral is Wednes‐
day March 3.

Soon, a multifunctional day centre will be constructed 
on Statia. This centre will be used for clients with ad‐
diction problems and possibly psychiatrical related 
problems.  
 
According to Mr. Kenneth Cuvalay, who will be coordi‐
nating the care given at this facility. Some 20 to 25 
persons on Statia have these problems.

Mr. Marks  said that if the flatland beside the airport was 
cultivated and animals were kept out, it would take five 
years to develop a good quality grass. The grass can be 
collected and stored and used as food for the animals.
