Annual Meeting
An Annual Meeting is held each year at
the end of January at which new Bishops
Committee and Convention Delegates are
elected.
St. Francis Episcopal Church is a mission
of the Episcopal Diocese of
Missouri.

The Chalice is the newsletter of St.

Francis Episcopal Church, Eureka, and is
published at least 10 times per year.
Submissions for The Chalice are due
approximately the 20th of each month
and may be
e-mailed to the Office at

A man I know told me this story recently: I was

picking up medicine for my wife from the drugstore. I
parked in the handicapped spot; we have a handicap plate
on our car. As you know, Im a burly guy, in good
physical condition. As I hustled into the store a man
shouted at me, What do you think youre doing, parking
in a handicap spot? I wanted to scream at him, but I just
kept walking. That man assumed I was somehow lying
about needing a handicapped parking place. What he
couldnt see is that my wife cant walk; shes dying of
cancer.
We can never know another persons experience.
We know only a little of others lives, even the people we
are closest to. And we have very little knowledge of what
the people we worship with experience on a daily basis.
Judging others and gossiping about others is
tantalizing. We see something and we assume we
understand what it means. We watch another persons
actions and we think we know what they are doing and
why. But the truth of anothers existence is largely a
mystery.
We often get in trouble when we speak. We rarely

Why the Road to Racial Healing is Taking So Long
The Episcopal Diocese of Missouri's Commission on Dismantling Racism and
the YWCA Metro St. Louis are co-sponsoring an event focused on racial
reconciliation and education on Nov. 7. Tim Wise, nationally known author, scholar
and writer on issues of racial reconciliation, white privilege and racism, joins us in
St. Louis to address these topics in a wide-ranging panel discussion, presentation
and Q&A session.
The day will be punctuated by a free boxed lunch for attendees and starts
promptly at 9:30 a.m. with a panel discussion. Wise will moderate the discussion on
how racism and privilege affect education, law enforcement, religion and housing
with noted local guests including the Right Rev. George Wayne Smith, bishop of the
Episcopal Diocese of Missouri; Amy Hunter, director for racial justice at the YWCA
Metro St. Louis; and Dr. Dale Anderson, St. Louis-area psychiatrist and mental
health expert. That discussion runs till noon.
The event is at the Phyllis Wheatley Heritage Center, 2711 Locust Street, St.
Louis, MO 63103.
Following lunch, at 12:45 p.m. Tim will offer a presentation about the issues
and take questions from the audience. Guests are asked to arrive by 9 a.m. to start
the program promptly at 9:30 a.m. The program ends at 2:30 p.m.

602 Brewster Rd.: Property Update

Since the beginning of October, weve taken the following steps:
*

Treasurer Suzanne Jones and Pastor Sally discussed financing

and next steps with CFO Desiree Viliocco and Canon Joe Chambers
from the Offices of the Bishop on Oct 8.

The Executive Committee met with John Hessel, a local capital

campaign consultant, on Oct 1. The Bishops Committee has approved
hiring John for our capital campaign. Work on the campaign will begin
in Dec.

The Bishops Committee and members of the congregation met

with Glen Trematore, CEO of Church Development Services, on
Thursday, Oct 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the Lodge.

Subsequent to that meeting, the Bishops Committee approved

using Church Development Services to design the layout of the church
building, to produce renderings, and to produce architectural drawings.
We will be ready for the City of Eurekas site approval by the time
Church Development Services completes their contract with us.

On Oct 26 we held a congregational meeting to reach consensus

on our space needs for the building. That information was sent to
Church Development Services on Oct 27.

We are in the process of obtaining 2 bids for the demolition

work. In addition to tearing down 4 buildings on the property, the
contractor will destroy the septic tank, remove the drain field, and bust
up the concrete foundation of the house.

Eureka Sign and Display has created a 4 x 8 sign for us,

announcing that the property is the future home of St. Francis Church.
Bob Champlin and Tony Weaver will be installing the sign soon.

Pastor Sally will continue to hold update meetings on Sunday mornings at

9:30 a.m. and is always available to answer questions and hear your ideas.

From the Kids Space

October 4
This week for St. Francis Feast Day the kids learned about St. Francis and since he's
the patron saint of zoos and animals they made homes for their stuffed animals out
of cardboard boxes. The kids were very creative and came up with many neat ideas
including pompom floors so their animals have a comfortable carpet.

October 11
This week the kids made lists of items in their rooms at home. After they made a big
list they had to choose 5 items they would take with them if they were leaving
home. Then they chose just one item to take with them if they had to leave in a
hurry overnight. The kids were very creative in their answers: clothes, iPad, mini
fridge, bed, and 3ds.
Then after reading Mark 10:17-31 the kids learned being "in" means following
God's ways for us. They decorated wooden crosses to remind them how they are to
follow God.
October 18
This week the kids had to choose one person who would win a contest on the
internet called, "Who is the Greatest?" The kids chose asdf movies (YouTube
videos) as their final choice.
Then the children made scrolls to honor everyday servants and were charged with
the task of doing at least one thing on their scrolls to serve others this week. A few
examples of the ways they could serve this week was helping someone carry books,
feeding animals, making their beds, raking leaves, singing carols at nursing homes,
making bread and/or donating food, and entertaining people.
October 25
This week the kids got to experiment with being blind and led each other around the
room with one person being blind and one being able to see. Some of the kids easily
maneuvered around the room, but others bumped into tables.
They also made clay medallions with their Saint thumb print and will parade them
through worship next Sunday on All Saints Day.

Prayer for St. Francis

We pray for the witness, renewal, and growth of our parish family. Living God,
infuse us with your love. Enable us to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ to all
whom we meet through our actions, our thoughts, our words. Make St. Francis'
Church a place of invitation and welcome, a safe harbor and a beacon of the light of
Christ. Amen.

Recipe of the Month

Butternut squash soup
Ingredients:
1 medium butternut squash or 1 bag cubed squash (about 2 lbs.)
1 Tablespoon vegetable or grapeseed oil
1 teaspoon brown mustard seeds
3 cloves garlic, finely chopped
2-inch piece ginger, peeled and finely shredded
1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
1/4 cup chopped cilantro (optional)
Directions:
Halve the squash lengthwise. Scoop out the seeds (roast them, if you like), cut off
and discard rind, and chop squash into bite-size pieces. Set aside.
In a large frying pan or pot, heat oil over medium-high heat. Add the mustard seeds,
cover, and cook until you hear them "pop," about 2 minutes. Add the garlic and
ginger and cook, stirring, until opaque and fragrant, about 1 minute.
Add the squash, salt, and 1/2 cup water. Stir to combine, cover, and cook, stirring
occasionally, until the squash is tender, about 15 minutes. Add additional water, if
necessary, to keep the squash from sticking to the pan.
Add the cilantro, if you like, and stir to combine. Serve squash hot or warm.

Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori: I am deeply

grateful for what God has been up to in the midst of our
journey together
October 23,
2015
[Episcopal Church Office of Public Affairs press release] Episcopal Church
Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori has issued the following statement in
English and Spanish:
The Episcopal Church has come a long way in the last 10 years. We are no
longer consumed by internal conflict over various social issues. We are clearer
about who we are a multinational church, with congregations in 17 nations,
worshipping in countless different languages, thriving in international, immigrant,
and multicultural contexts everywhere, and discovering the abundant life that comes
in turning outward to love the neighbors nearby and far away. We are far more
conscious about our vocation as partners in the mission of God to reconcile and heal
the world, particularly shaped by the Five Anglican Marks of Mission. We are
holding our identity as Episcopal Christians a bit more confidently, even in the
midst of our diversity. We are also more willing to hold that identity lightly and
gracefully in engaging other Christians and people of other religious traditions,
searching for what we dream of in common shalom, the Reign of God, a more just
and peaceful world, with abundant life for all creation.
I am deeply grateful for what God has been up to in the midst of our journey
together, and I look forward to seeing how this church of the middle way will
continue to lead and partner as we travel the road home, into Gods fullest dream of
abundant life for all. I thank the people of this Church and beyond for your prayers
over the last nine years especially in recognition that we do this work together,
never alone. May God bless the next chapter of The Episcopal Churchs
engagement in Gods mission, as we go together into Galilee!
The Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori
