NG-PON will be necessary if bandwidth
requirement of per end user beyond 100Mbps

HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO., LTD.

Optical access will evolve toward

500Mb/s~1Gb/s (long term)

A short history of PON

1994: pi-PON.

50 Mb/s, 1310nm bidirectional, circuit switched

1999: A/B-PON.

622/155 Mb/s, 1550nm down, 1310nm up, ATM-based

2004: G-PON.

2.4/1/2Gb/s, 1490nm down, 1310nm up, packet-based

2009: NG-PON1.

10/2.5Gb/s, 1577nm down, 1270nm up, packet-based

2014: NG-PON2.

40G+ capacity but how? (and when?) (and why?)

Protocol and management of NG-PON2

Mainly, NG-PON2s protocol (the TC layer), management
(the OAM layer), and the service architecture (TR-156) is
the same as XG-PON1 (similar to G-PON)

So its a PON over DWDM, so what?

Activation in multi-wavelength,

PON is different from DWDM

multi-operator, multi-vendor

No mux on the ONU side

case is non-trivial

Extreme dynamic range

No link engineering allowed

Worst-worst-worst case assumed
Interoperable specs required

ONUs must have spectral purity

The system to support DWBA?

Downstream tuning is slow

If ONU is not calibrated, how

Upstream tuning medium

can it learn without jamming

TDMA is very fast

others?
Synchronized ranging windows?

Burst mode tunable lasers

Power -> Temp -> Wavelength

Very weak photon ranging?

Markets to watch for driving NG-PON

Large MDU and FTTdp (G.fast) deployment
MDU applications have high aggregate bandwidth for each ONU
Also a low sensitivity to optical interface costs (optics are shared)
MDU and FTTdp are therefore a reasonable first step for NG PON
systems

Wireless backhaul and fronthaul

Wireless demand is exploding, and 5G is coming
In rural areas, 4G and 5G may become the defacto answer
Effectively, this becomes FTTnode with wireless drops

Network rebuilds
The main body of deployments are G-PON and 1GE-PON
However, before those systems, there was B-PON
This base of B-PON is nearing EOL, and will need replacement

Network extension
First optical deployments took the easy ground
There is still 50% of the territory uncovered
but it tends to be less desirable
Can next generation technologies help by more fiber sharing?
