SCHOOL-BASED POLICY FOR THE USE OF CELL PHONES, COMPUTING DEVICES,


AND PORTABLE MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEMS ON SCHOOL AND
CAMPUS-WIDE PROPERTY.
A. Chancellors Regulation A-413 states that students are permitted to bring the following electronic items to
school: 1) cell phones; 2) laptops, tablets, iPads and other similar computing devices, referred herein
as computing devices in general; and 3) portable music and entertainment systems, such as iPods,
MP3 players, PSP, and Nintendo DS.
B. The TAFT EDUCATIONAL CAMPUS follows a uniform computing devices and portable music
and entertainment systems collection policy before the student goes through scanning. Therefore, all
computing devices and/or portable music and entertainment systems will be collected before the
student swipes his/her ID through our CASS automated attendance system.
C. The student MUST have a valid and current school picture ID to surrender any item to be collected
as per guidelines above; as well as a signed contract on file (by both student and parent/guardian).
D. All collected items, as per guidelines above, will be labeled and placed in a padded yellow envelope to be
secured in an undisclosed locked storage area on campus during the school day. They will be redistributed by school personnel only at the end of a students official dismissal time according to their
schedule. This schedule includes after school academic activities. No items will be distributed If the
student is picked up early, NO EXCEPTIONS. Any student that needs to leave early has the option
of not bringing any item or waiting until the end of his school day the following day he/she is in
school. The re-distribution location will be at the main lobby as students are prompted to leave the
building.
E. The school first period begins at 8:25 AM; any student entering scanning after that time will not be
permitted to check-in any item included on the list described above. Exceptions will be made for
students with modified schedules.
F. The school is not responsible or financially liable for any electronic item/computing device if
lost/damaged/stolen; even if the electronic item/computing device is confiscated.
Confiscation and return of electronic items.
It is the ENTIRE childs responsibility to take proper care of his/her device. Devices may not be charged
or used at school UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE. Read below for the ladder of infractions and its
consequences for violations of the school policy regarding electronic items or computing devices:
1st Infraction:

Written warning to be logged in by the Deans Office (DO).

2nd Infraction:

Confiscation of item and return at end of school day by DO.

3rd Infraction:

Confiscation of item and return following parent conference by DO.

4 Infraction:

Confiscation of item and return following student entering into behavioral contract.

5th Infraction: Revocation of privilege to bring item to school.


* Discipline
Students who use cell phones, computing devices, and/or portable music and entertainment system in violation of
any provision of the DOEs Discipline Code, the schools policy, Chancellor Regulation A-413, and/or the DOEs
Internet Acceptable Use and Safety Policy (ISUSP) will be subject to discipline in accordance with the guidance
interventions and disciplinary responses set forth in the Discipline Code.
