KodaikanalisacityinthehillsofTalukdivisionofDindiguldistrictinthestateofTamilNadu,India.Kodaikanalisreferredtoas

the"PrincessofHillstations"andhasalonghistoryasaretreatandpopulartouristdestination.It'salotcoolerintemperature
thanlowerelevationcitiessuchasChennai.
Kodaikanalwasestablishedin1845asarefugefromthehightemperaturesandtropicaldiseasesoftheplains.Muchofthe
localeconomyisbasedontheHospitalityindustryservingtourism.

BearSholaFalls

Kodaikanalhasseveralscenicnaturalattractionswhichareenjoyedbyitsvisitorsandmakeitapopularromanticdestination
fornewlyweds.Thesearedescribedinorderofdistancefromthebusstand.

KodaikanalLake, 0.5 km (0.3 mi) from the bus stand, is an artificial, roughly starshaped 45 ha (60 acres) lake built in

GreenValleyView

1863.ItisrecognizedasKodaikanal'smostpopulargeographiclandmarkandtouristattraction.Rowboatsandpedaloscanbe
hiredattheKodaikanalBoatClubwithitsmainentranceneartheonlyfivestarhotelinKodaikanal,TheCarlton.Horsesand
bicyclescanbehiredbesidethelakeforshortperiods.The5kilometers(3mi)paththatskirtstheperipheryofthislovelylakeis
afavouritewalkforthelocalsandtouristsalike.

BryantPark,Justeastofthelakeand0.5km(0.3mi)fromthebusstand,isawonderfullymaintained20.5acres(8.3ha)
botanicalgarden.Theparkwasplannedandbuiltin1908byaforestofficerfromMadurai,H.D.Bryant,andnamedafterhim.
With325speciesoftrees,shrubsandcactuses,theparkisarainbowofstunningflowersduringthepeakseason.

Museum

Alargesectionisdedicatedtonearly740varietiesofroses.Thereisa1857EucalyptustreeandaBodhitreewhichaddsa
religioussignificancetothepark.Ornamentalplantsarecultivatedinanurseryforsale.Theparkorganizeshorticulturalexhibits
andflowershowseverysummer,tocoincidewiththepeakseason.Entrancefeetotheparkisnominalanditisopenthroughout
theyear.

Coaker'sWalk,0.5km(0.3mi)fromthebusstand,constructedbyLt.Coakerin1872,isa1kilometers(0.62mi)paved
pedestrianpathrunningalongtheedgeofsteepslopesonthesouthernsideofKodai.Thewalk,windingaroundMountNebo,
starts in front of the Van Allen hospital, running parallel to the Van Allen Hospital Road and joins the main road beside
St.Peter'sChurch,providingastunningpanoramicviewoftheplains.OnacleardayonecanviewasfarasDolphin'sNosein
south, the valley of the Pambar River in the southeast, Periyakulam town and even the city of Madurai. A fascinating rare
phenomenoncalledBrockenspectrecanbewitnessed,whenapersoncanseehisshadowonthecloudswitharainbowhalo.
Thisoccurswhenthesunisbehindtheviewerandcloudsandmistaretothefront.Thereisanobservatorywithatelescope
halfwayalongthewalk.Entrancefeetothewalkwayisnominalanditisopenthroughouttheyear.

BearSholaFalls,3kilometers(2mi)fromthebusstand,isatallwaterfallinaReserveforest.Thefinalapproachtothis

GunaCaves

quietareaisagentlyclimbingfootpath.

GreenValleyView,(formerlycalledSuicidePoint)5.5kilometers(3mi)fromthebusstandandnearthegolfcourse,has
anexcellentpanoramicviewoftheplainsandasheerdropof1,500meters(4,921ft)overlookingtheVaigaiDamtothesouth.
Thestairwayleadinguptoitishighlycommercializedandlinedwithrowsofshopstotempttourists.

SilverCascade

ShenbaganurMuseumofNaturalHistory,6kilometers(4mi)fromthebusstand,foundedin1895,isopentothe
publicforviewingtheiroutstandingtaxidermycollectionofmorethan500speciesofanimals,birdsandinsectsandaliving
collectionofover300exoticorchidspecies.ThemuseumisaffliatedwithLoyolaCollegeinChennaiandexhibitsartifactsofthe
ancientPalaiyartribespeoplewhosedescendantsstillliveinthesehills.

KodaikanalSolarObservatory6kilometers(4mi)fromthebusstandonObservatoryRoad,at2,343meters(7,687ft)

Dolphin'sNose

is the highest location near Kodai. The first observations were commenced here in 1901. Former Director John Evershed,
discovered the phenomenon of radial motion in sunspots, now known as the Evershed effect. The Kodaikanal Terrestrial
Telescopecanviewagrandpanoramaincluding:SothupparaiDam,VaigaiDam,PeriyakulamandVarahariver.ThisIndian
InstituteofAstrophysicsfacilityhasacomprehensiveAstronomicalSciencemuseumwithorganizedpublictours,accesstothe
astronomylibrary,andschedulednighttimetelescopicskyviewing.Itisopendailytothepublicduringpeakseason,andafew
hourseachFridaytherestoftheyear.

PillarRocks,8kilometers(5mi)fromthebusstand,isasetofthreegiantrockpillarswhichstand122meters(400ft)high.
[41]ManagedbytheTamilNaduForestDepartment,Theviewpointcanbecrowdedbutisnotcommercialized.Thereisan
excellentpublicgardenadjacenttotheviewpoint.

Gunacaves, made popular by the Tamil movie Guna, previously called Devils Kitchen, are deep batinfested chambers
betweenthethreegiganticbouldersthatarethePillarRocks.Thedeepnarrowravinesofthecavesarenowclosedtopublic
duetothetrajicdeathsoftwelveyouthsthere.[citationneeded]Thesedangerouscavesarehighlyprotectednow,andtourists
canseesectionsofthecavesystemfromafar.

SilverCascade,8kilometers(5mi)fromKodaikanalatawidebendinthelongandwindingLawsGhatRoad,ataltitude
1,800meters(5,906ft),isa55meters(180ft)waterfallformedfromtheoutflowofKodaikanalLake.[43]Thewaterqualityis
reportedlypoorandnotgoodenoughforbathing.Thisimpressivewaterfallisapopularstopforfirsttimevisitors.Therearea
fewsouvenirandfruitvendorsandmanymonkeyshere.Thereisalsoasmallerbutmoreserenewaterfallbelowthebridge
whichcrossesthestreamhere.

Dolphin'sNose,8kilometers(5mi)fromthebusstand,isflatrockprojectingoverabreathtakingchasm6,600feet(2,000
m)deep.Itisanundisturbedarea1kilometers(1mi)downaverysteeprockytrailbeginningsoonafterPambarBridge.Orange
juicevendorsalongthetrailofferawelcomereststop.Beautifulviewsofsteeprockyescarpmentsrisingfromtheplainscanbe
seen.TheoldvillageofVellagavicanbereachedthrougharuggedbridlepathhere.Ashortpavedwalkwayleadsfromthe
roadheretoPambarfalls(whichisalsolocallyaddressedas'LirilFalls'afterthefamousLirilSoapAdvertisementfilmingin
1985).

Kurinji Andavar Murugan temple, 4 kilometers (2 mi) from the busstand, is famous for its Kurinji flower which
blossomsintheareaonlyonceevery12years.ThedeityhereiscalledSriKurinjiEasware,whoisinfactLordMurugan.This
temple was built in 1936 by a European lady, who on coming to India, converted to Hinduism.She changed her name to
LeelavathiandmarriedaMr.Ramanathan.SheisalsoknownasLadyRamanathan.Thistempleisunderthemanagementof
ArulmighuDhandayuthapaniSwamyThiruKovil,Palani.
