Activity 1 Name the Hobbies

Get students to look at the pictures.
2.
Ask students the following question:

What are the hobbies in the pictures?

Listen and Say Aloud


Play the Audio-Video DVD to allow students to listen and practise saying aloud the hobbies.
Pause after each word to allow all students to internalise the targeted vocabulary.
Ensure that all students participate actively. Replay if necessary.

Get students to look at the pictures again.
Ask students this question: Where do you carry out these activities?
Get students to work in pairs.
One student invites another student to join him/her in carrying out their favourite hobby.
Guide students to ask and answer the following questions:

Would you like to join me for a picnic this Saturday? OR

Would you like to play badminton with me this evening at five?


Suggested answers:
Would you like to join me for a picnic this Saturday?
Yes, I would like to join you for a picnic.
No, I'm sorry. I can't make it.
OR

ACTIVITIES
Activity 1 Direct Me!

Draw students' attention to the picture.
2.
Get all students to predict what the picture is about by asking the following questions:

What do you see in this picture?

What do you think this video is about?

Play the audio-video DVD. Get students to watch the video.
Activity 2 Pause and Practise
1.
Play the audio-video DVD and pause at the following sentence patterns:
I like
I love
I don't really like because
I don't like because

At every pause, teacher asks students questions to help students be aware of the sentence patterns used for likes and dislikes when
talking about hobbies.

Questions asked must allow students to use the sentence patterns in their answers.
4.
Teacher asks questions to elicit personal responses from students.
For example, pause at:
I like playing badminton. (taken from Tapescript)
T: What do you like to do ?
S: I like

Activity 1 Interview Me

Tell students that they will be interviewing their friends about their hobbies. They are not allowed to write down any of the
information.

Teacher demonstrates with one student. Ask a student the following questions:
T: What is your hobby?
S: My hobby is singing/dancing/drawing
T: Why do you like the hobby?
S: I like it because it makes me happy.
From the student's responses, teacher models the structure:
My hobby is singing. I like singing because it makes me happy.

Get students to work in pairs. Students take turns to talk about their hobbies with their partners.
Activity 2 Let's Share

Get students to share the information gathered during the interview with the class.
2.
Teacher models the sentence patterns on how to report the information gathered.
Maria's hobby is singing. She likes singing because it makes her happy.

Invite all students to share the information gathered with the class.

Activity 1 Let's Promote!

Draw students' attention to the picture.
2.
Ask the following questions:

What do you see in the picture?

What are they doing?

Tell students that they are going to form a Hobby Club and they are going to promote their club to the class.
4.
Get students to work in groups of five.
5.
Students form a circle. Give a ball to each group.
6.
Each group must prepare their posters to promote their Hobby Club.

Each poster must include the following:

Share It
Invite each group to share their posters and promote their clubs. Each member in the group must be given a chance to share.
The following are steps to help students to talk about their clubs. Ensure that each student play a role in promoting the club.
Greet the teacher and classmates. Introduce the members in the group.
One member introduces the club logo and name.
The next member explains the logo for the club.
Another member talks about the activities for the club.
The last member gives reasons why the students should join the club.
Ensure all groups get the opportunity to present their clubs.
Get students to vote on the best poster and give reasons for their choice.
