Helensburgh Public School Community Cookbook
In light of our fabulous canteen recipes being published by
the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District in the School
Canteen Recipe Book, we thought it would be a great idea if
the HPS Community had its very own cook book!
The aim is to have this cook
book full of creative, healthy and
achievable recipes published just
in time for Mothers Day 2016.

What we are excited about!

Walkathon results so far, indicate over $12,000 has been

raised for the senior playground equipment. What a
fabulous result. That means our fundraising thermometer
has hit half way!!!! We are currently applying for corporate
and government grants to help us top up the rest of the
money we need to hit our goal but the school community
has raised over half of the $60,000 on their own and this is
a fabulous achievement CONGRATULATIONS EVERYONE.

If you would like to help out and send us your favourite
recipe or two, please do! Send them to our

childs name and class so we can put it in the book.
We look forward to receiving lots of yumminess!

CRISPY TORTILLA SNACKER

Ingredients:
2 Tortillas (Grab corn tortillas if you have a family member who
is Gluten intolerant)
1/4 cup Grated or sliced cheddar cheese
Thinly sliced red capsicum
Thinly sliced tomato. (When the tortilla is toasted and the
cheese melted, the tomato doesn't seem to make the tortilla go
soggy.)
Thinly sliced shallot
OR whatever fillings happen to be in the fridge at the time. The
crucial ingredient is the cheese that "glues" it all together.
Method:
Place one of the tortillas in a fry pan or under the grill on a
medium-low heat.
Evenly spread the ingredients over the tortilla and top with the
second tortilla.
Depending on whether
you do this in a pan or under the grill

as part of our activities. We believe it is important to bring in

these extra funds as a way of boosting the government budgets
which don't quite cover everything. We look to improve the
school environment, enhance the technical capabilities of the
school and to provide much needed resources for all the children.
These decisions are not made lightly and they need to be voted on
by financial members of the P&C. To become a financial member
you need only pay $1 per year and you can play a part in making
these important decisions.

Recap of our October Meeting

Mr Brightwell our Relieving Principal discussed the

importance of submitting our parent surveys (if you
havent done yours make sure you print one from the
Highlights section of our school website and send it in)
Kinder Orientations have begun and with 70 students
enrolled already Mr Brightwell was very pleased with
the numbers. The P&C extended a big thank you to all
current Kindergarten parents who offered to cook for
our Kindergarten Orientation Morning Tea and a special
thank you was sent out to Annette, Rebecca & Ishbel for
your offer to help hosting on the day we appreciate all
your efforts.

JAN HILL - Retirement
th

On the 25 of November 2015

Jan Hill will officially retire from
Helensburgh Public School
Canteen and we would like to
take this opportunity to wish her
all the very best for her coming
years of retirement.
Jan has been with the School Canteen for an astonishing 27 years.
THANK YOU Jan! We appreciate the years of dedicated service she
have given us and thank her for being such a wonderful part of our
P&C Canteen. Goodluck & Goodbye!

CALLING GRANDPARENT VOLUNTEERS

With a big chunk of our Parent Canteen Volunteers leaving with
Year 6 this year we are keen to boost our volunteer pool. A
suggestion has been made to ask if any grandparents might be
interested in volunteering in the canteen twice a term from 9 1pm. Children love to see parents helping in the canteen but if you
cant help perhaps a grandparent might be able to.

Applications for the Canteen Assistant Position closed on the 1 of

November, 2015. The selection committee will be made up of the
P&C Executive and a member of staff. All applications will be
reviewed and the successful applicants will be invited for an
interview in due course.

Finance report
October has been a quiet month so not much to report here. I will
take the opportunity instead to talk about a couple of things that
are included in the treasurer's role. While the treasurer doesn't
look after the fundraising, I do take responsibility for the finances.
This includes providing floats, counting and double counting
money, banking the money and reporting back to the school and
the P&C about the money earned and profits made.
The P&C is then in charge of deciding what to do with these funds.
Did you know, the P&C is not required to do any fundraising at all

Teacher in the spotlight

Mr Brightwell
Describe yourself in 3 words: Positive, energetic, personal
Something to knock off the bucket list? Travel, I'd love to go to
Italy.
What wouldnt people know about you? I was evacuated with
my family in the 1990 Nyngan Flood and could not return to our
house for over 12 months after it was rebuilt.
What has impressed you at HPS: On my first day, I drove in the
gates and the school had a very positive appearance. It was neat,
modern and just looks like a "nice" school. Then I met the
children. I was very impressed with their initiative to come and
introduce themselves to me. They were genuinely friendly,
articulate, intelligent and there were so many smiles. The staff
have been nothing but welcoming and accommodating. My first
week here was a whirlwind, from science day in Mrs Tipping's
class, Mrs Lewis showed me the portraits from art enrichment
and the great cooking skills she was teaching, we had the Whacky
Walk-a-thon and the Principal's Morning Tea. Wow!

Homework Tips for Busy Parents

The nagging, the battles,do you dread school work as much as
the kids do? Here's a couple of tips that might help them develop
good study habits.
Ann Dolin, who is the author of Homework Made Simple: Tips,
Tools and Solutions for Stress-Free Homework. Says the single
best way to improve your childs homework performance and
bring peace to your home is to insist on a daily/weekly schedule
or routine. In some homes, that means doing it right after school:
for others, it can mean waiting until after dinner. Dolin
recommends giving all kids at least 30 minutes to have a snack
and unwind, sports or after-school care isnt really a break. Kids
need to let down a little at home before launching into
homework. The key is to be consistent about routine. Try some
different approaches and see what works best, this might mean
nominating one afternoon a week for homework or a set time
each afternoon to do homework, then stick to it.
