Double Doctor, Doublethink and the

Culture of opportunists

After hearing the speech delivered by the Minister Rajapakshe, a fundamental question

is being placed in the society that yearns for good governance. Are we killing the time,
with a double doctor who followed an Orwellian doublethink? Elected representatives
have the moral authority to bring an impeachment against the subject, if someone is
misshaping the fundamental issues of the constitution in this nation. Isnt that so, Mr.
President?

EDITORIAL
( November 6, 2015, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Once upon a time.no, lets be
honest, very often in this country there were men and women, one after another who
were willing to become meek stooges to achieve whatever they dreamed off but were
never capable of achieving through the genuine procedure.
Politics in Sri Lanka is heaven for such people, and unfortunately many of them have
succeeded. Their success creates a distorted hypocritical society. In other words,
politics in Sri Lanka has created a land of the dying for the ordinary people while

making a heaven for those that played a vital role in vandalising the dignity of the
nation. The challenge arises when the privileges they create for themselves affect the
living standards of all those around them. We have a dream for the land. The land in
which, justice is the tradition; anti-corruption is the culture; personal liberty is the
common sense; gender equality is the symbolic language; freedom is the nationality;
unity is the identity.
Lets recall one of interesting stories, how our respective people acts when they have
power to manipulate the truth.
The government was headed by former President Chandrika Bandaranaike, at the
time. Like other politicians she also maintained a large staff for the sake of improving
the country and to find the solution for the long term civil war. So, she was careful on
many issues, while there were people around her that cynically manipulated the truth
to ensure that incorrect decisions were made.
It was she, who decided that Rear Admiral (Rtd) Mohan Wijewickrama, one of the
most proficient naval officers who had all the necessary experience and qualifications
to be the head of the Navy. Henceforth she instructed the office to prepare his
appointment. The letter of appointment was on the table, and Mohan was set to be the
Commander of the Navy.
Then at the very last moment, someone close to the president sneaked into the office
and changed the letter. Frustrated Mohan respectfully deserved his retirement, and
Admiral (Retired) Wasantha Krannagoda assumed the duty as the Commander of the
Navy. Mohan was later appointed as the Governor of the eastern province.
Despite the political opinions they followed, there is no doubt, both officers were
experts in their respective areas but Mohan was the one who deserved the post. The
question, however, is not about those two officers, but the sneak. The role played by
the political snail, under the Presidents table. In other words, who was the snug as a
bug in a rug? Only those who know the facts, know not only the true history but where
is he is placed at the present.
However, he is not only the one, who played the game in the political rat-hole to distort
the credibility of the system and the trust of the public on the leaders whom they
elected. All the hypes of good governance, anti-corruption, transparency,
accountability, at large the lesson taught by the politics of Lichchavi Clan was lying in
their laps. As Gandhi Ji, enlightened us, there is a sufficiency in the world for mans
need but not for mans greed, is the unforgettable lesson when it comes to Sri
Lankan politics.
Despite all tuneful talks he made, the Minister of Justice, Wijedasa Rajapakshe
appears to be making up the history of the country to suit his own version of what he
wants people to recall. This is what we could assert by hearing what the Minister
lamented in the parliament on last Tuesday, followed by the Minister Marapana.

Mr. Minister, we understood, unlike you, we, as common men have

no double doctorates to disengage the knob of the complicity. It
may be your moment to explain to the country, how can you be an
ultra-independent Minister of Justice who has zero interference
with the state institutions while preventing a suspect being
arrested.
I took up the position that he should not be arrested in this connection.
I brought this to the notice of the President and the Prime Minister and
both of them said we should do what is legal, he said, while disclosing
that he has prevented former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa
from being arrested in connection with the Avant Garde floating armory
case.
Interesting; he has swanked on the present situation of the country in the same
speech as follows;
Arbitrary rules are not in placed. The Police, Attorney General are fully independent.
There is no political interference. That is my responsibility. Unlike in the past the
situation is politically disadvantageous for us. But, we as the government is not
interfering them whatsoever. All those institutions are governing by the
independent commissions, was his contradictory claim in the house.
Mr. Minister, we understood, unlike you, we, as common men have no double
doctorates to disengage the knob of the complicity. It may be your moment to explain
to the country, how can you be an ultra-independent Minister of Justice who has zero
interference with the state institutions while preventing a suspect being arrested.

Would you mind to let us know, in which theory of justice has detailed or prescribed
your strategy? Or, is this yet another narration of the bitter and sorrow culture of
opportunists.
Lets recall John Rawls, the author of Theory of Justice here, justice in the first virtue
of social institutions, as truth is of systems of thought. A theory however elegant and
economical must be rejected or revised if it is untrue; likewise laws and institutions no
matter how efficient and well-arranged must be reformed or abolished if they are
unjust.
Amongst the hundreds of virtues, what we learn from the records of Thomas
Jefferson, law is often the tyrants will, and always so when it violates the right of an
individual.
However, it is wonderful to see Minister Rajapakshes slogans on him, such as, the
true voice against corruption! The professional symbol of modern Sri Lankan Politics!
Parliaments main whistle-blower!
Nonetheless, after hearing the speech delivered by the Minister Rajapakshe, a
fundamental question is being placed in the society that yearns for good governance.
Are we killing the time, with a double doctor who followed an Orwellian doublethink?
Elected representatives have the moral authority to bring an impeachment against the
subject, if someone is misshaping the fundamental issues of the constitution in this
nation. Isnt that so, Mr. President?
