Senior Citizen Center turns 40

DELPHOS The
Delphos Senior Center is
40 years young.
From its humble beginnings in a former grocery
store, the facility on Suthoff
Street has grown to include
a renovated multi-purpose
room for bingo, lunch and
other programs, a new
parking lot and a garage for
transportation vehicles.
The focus, as always,
is meeting the physical,
social, economic and intellectual needs of senior citizens.
Our seniors have done
a lot for all of us. Its our
turn to help take care of
them, Center Director
Alice Curth said.
The center is a busy
place during lunchtime,
with meals catered by the
Delphos Eagles Lodge at
11:30 a.m. for $4 and bingo
to follow. The center also
has an educational speaker
during lunch every so often,
with the next presentation
on Estate Planning at 11:30
a.m. on Nov. 10.
They also offer health
screenings, like blood pres-
sure checks on the first and

third Wednesdays at noon,
a foot care clinic on the
second Tuesday of every
month starting at 1 p.m.
Wise Hearing Solutions will
be at the center at 1 p.m. on
Nov. 17 for hearing checks.
For those who like to
stay active, exercise classes
are held at 10 a.m. Monday
and Thursday and line
dancing at 10 a.m. Tuesday.
Card sharks can join
in the fun with bridge on
Tuesday afternoons and
euchre on Friday afternoons.

We have a good, caring
staff that makes things happen, Curth said.

DELPHOS Are you having a hard time figuring out

what to get your children or grandchildren for Christmas?
The City of Delphos has the solution and will offer a
Christmas Special on 2016 Season tickets for the Delphos
Municipal Swimming Pool.
Certificates can be purchased from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
on Dec. 4 at the Municipal Building, 608 N. Canal St. and
from 6-8:30 p.m. at fire chiefs office in the Safety Service
Building at 125 E. Second St. during the Kiwanis Club of
Delphos Hometown Christmas Celebration.
The one-day special prices will be $40 for individual
season passes and $125 for family season passes. These
certificates must be presented to the city along with a
completed application in May when ticket sales begin.
Individual passes are normally $80 and family passes are
$190.
Several council members had been asking what we
could do for the voters for passing the levy for Parks and
Recreation and then a couple of grandmothers called and
wanted to know if they could purchase passes for their
grandchildren so we thought this would be a great opportunity to offer some savings on passes as a thank you
and give people a chance to purchase them for Christmas
gifts, Safety Service Director Shane Coleman said. We
got councils blessing on Monday and put this together.
Coleman said pool attendance has also been a little slimmer the past several years.
We have tried some other things like Free Popcorn
Wednesday and a free swim day as a way to get more people to the pool and to say thank you to voters, Coleman
said. Hopefully the pool pass sale will bring more people
to the pool next summer.

If youre spotting bright
lights flashing through the
sky, youre not alone. From
Taiwan to Chile and across
the United States, reports
of fireballs lighting up the
night are coming in fast and
steady. No worries, though.
Its neither the end of days
nor an extraterrestrial invasion. In fact, it happens
every year.
The annual Taurid
meteor shower is going on
right now, and we are seeing
steady activity in our meteor cameras, explained Bill
Cooke, lead for the NASA
Meteoroid Environments
Office. Individuals should
not be surprised if they see
a bright meteor or fireball
over the next few nights.
Every
year
from
September-November, the
Earth passes through a
broad stream of debris left
by Comet Encke. The dust
associated with the comet
hits the Earths atmosphere

at 65,000 mph and burns up,
creating the Taurid meteor shower. Most years the
shower is weak, and only a
few Taurid meteors are seen
each night. Other years, the
Taurids can put on a show.
This year, the Taurids
may be more active than
usual. So much more so, in
fact, that skywatchers are
reporting as many as 10 to
12 meteors an hour, some
of which are so bright, they
light up the landscape.
According to NASA,
the three-month long event
began in September and will
continue on through the end
of November. The best time
to view these Halloween
fireballs in this area, however, is within the next few
days. Clearing skies and
a waning moon rapidly
approaching its next new
phase both increase visibility and reduce illumination. Conveniently, these
two factors coincide with
peak Taurid activity, NASA
reports.

DELPHOS On Oct. 30, officers met

with a male complainant at the Delphos
Police Department. The male told officers
that a female, known to him, had damaged
his car. Officers spoke with the female who
admitted to causing the damage. The report
has been forwarded to the Lima Municipal
Court and charges are currently pending.
On Sunday, officers were dispatched to the
1000 block of North Main Street in reference
to a possible theft. Officers spoke with the
male homeowner and found that it was not
a theft, but rather a civil incident between he
and his wife.

and Louise Wittler of Delphos. Jasons SAE has included
working over 2,000 hours for Wittler Farms and Wittler
Seeds as a farmhand, raised 16 market hogs. He also participated in the outdoor power equipment, ag mechanics,
farm business mgt., general livestock judging career development events. He served on several committees, chaired
a few also. Jason attended State and National Convention
and other leadership activities. He also completed 120
hours of home improvement and over 70 hours of community service. Jason is currently attending the University

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky The largest gathering of FFA members, recently took

place and 10 Delphos FFA members were part of it. More than 60,000 members, parents
and guests gathered for the National FFA Convention Oct. 28-31 in Louisville, Kentucky.
The purpose of this convention is to gather FFA members from across the nation to celebrate the achievements that have been made of the past year, broaden the horizons of
members by exposing them to new places, and motivate them to continue to reach their
goals.
Delphos FFA members boarded a charter bus on Wednesday morning with the Wapak
and Waynesfield FFA chapters. The first stop was a tour of Tyson Foods in Logansport,
Indiana.
That evening, members attended the first general session of the 2015 National
Convention highlighted by motivational speaker Dr. Rick Rigsby. They were entertained
by attending a country concert by Jake Owen and Maddy and Tae.
On Thursday, the group toured the Corvette Factory & Museum in Bowling Green,
Kentucky. Later that day, they toured Mammoth Caves in Louisville. Thursday evening
was highlighted by some recreation at Renaissance Fun Park a Go-kart Track, laser tagging and putt putt golf center.
Friday morning, they attended the fourth general convention session highlighted by
guest speaker Amberly Snyder. They also had the opportunity to visit the Career Show
at Convention. The Delphos FFA was also recognized as a 3-star National Chapter, the
highest ranking a chapter can earn at the national level.
The American Degree Session was the highlight of Saturday morning. Three Delphos
FFA members Kylie Fritz, Jason Wittler and Andy May were awarded their
American Degree, which is the highest award a member can earn. This degree is given
to only one-half of one percent of over 600,000 members. They have completed all of
the requirements through the FFA that enabled them to achieve the highest FFA honor
for a student. They all have received there Greenhand, Chapter and State FFA degrees.
They have been active members of the Delphos FFA chapter for five years, completed
four years of systematic Agriculture Education Instruction, have productively invested
$10,000, worked over 2,500 hours above scheduled class time, maintained a c or better
grade point average and were extremely involved as Delphos FFA members through a
numerous amount of Activities.
American Degree recipient Andy May is the son of Mike

and Sue May of Delphos. Andys SAE has included
raising and caring for 16 hogs and 25 chickens. He also
worked over 300 hours on Wrasman farms and over 1,400
hours at United Equity Inc.. He also compiled 45 hours
of home improvement and 120 hours community service
hours. Andy participated in parliamentary procedure,
Job Interview, and Greenhand quiz, and general livestock
judging career development events. He served on several
committees, chaired a few also. Andy also attended State
and National convention and other leadership activities.
Andy is currently attending the University of Northwestern
of Ohio majoring in agribusiness and marketing
American Degree recipient Kylie Fritz is the daughter of Eric

and Gina Fritz of Delphos. Kylies SAE has included raising
24 market hogs, a beef steer, 4 feeder calves and 25 chickens,
and also worked over 700 hours for Delphos Ace Hardware
and Rental. She also accrued 35 home improvement hours
and 110 hours of community service. Kylie served on several
committees, also was a chairman as well as vice president
and president of the chapter. She also participated in the
Greenhand quiz, parliamentary procedure, public speaking,
job interview and general livestock judging career development events. She attended State and National convention,
MFE, State leadership night and other leadership activities.
Kylie is currently attending the University of Northwestern
of Ohio majoring in agribusiness and marketing.

Drawers that stick have got to go:
Lovina helps sons organize space

It is Wednesday evening and I still

havent taken time to write this column. Daughters Verena, Loretta, and
Lovina are washing supper dishes.
The boys and Joe are just relaxing
and getting cleaned up.
Our supper was a simple, easy
one. Verena and Loretta made OneKettle Soup for our meal. Also on
the menu were crackers, cheese, and
venison summer sausage. One-Kettle
Soup is a soup my mother always
made at home. It is a favorite in our
family. A quick soup when youre
running late for a meal.
While the girls prepared supper, I
helped the boys sort through clothes
in their bedroom. We put a bedroom
suite in there that we bought at
a recent auction. We needed some
dressers replaced. After our house
fire we had some older dressers given
to us, but the drawers always would
get stuck. Benjamin, 16, has his own
bed and Joseph, 13, and Kevin, 10,
share a bed. Our bedrooms upstairs
are big rooms so there is enough
space to fit two beds plus four dressers. Kevin was proud to have his own
dresser for his clothes.
Daughters Elizabeth and Susan
are off work from the RV factory
this week. Elizabeth and her dogs
spent the day here yesterday. We had
a nice day together. Timothy went
deer hunting in the evening and was
excited to get a 7-point buck with a
16 1/2 inch spread. This is the fourth

every day she doesnt always get
to do all the extra cleaning. We
will probably wash her windows and
whatever else she needs done.
When Timothy and Elizabeth were
here for supper one night and were
ready to leave, Izzy went to hide. It
was so cute that she wanted to stay
here. She gets so spoiled. Crystal is
different and will whine if Elizabeth
goes outside without her. Whenever
Elizabeth sits down, Crystal is right
by her side or on her lap.
Recently, we were surprised to
have visitors from Ohio. It was Joes
Uncle Solomon and his Aunt Rachel.
They had been here the evening
before with intentions to spend the
night here. We had been at our
neighbor Ruths wedding. We had a
voicemail when we came home from
Solomon. They had already checked
in at a motel but Joe told them to
come for breakfast. We had a nice
visit with them. This was the first
time Rachel saw where we live.
Daughter Susan just came home.
She went to Moses house tonight
and then they went to town. Mose
wanted to buy a new mattress for his
bed. He took Susan out for supper.
The rest are all in bed so I think Ill
join them.

Ill share the recipe for OneKettle Soup this week. I hope you
will enjoy it as much as we do.
One-Kettle Soup
1 pint canned chunk beef
4 medium potatoes, peeled and
diced
1 medium onion, left whole
1/2 pound noodles or thin spaghetti
salt and pepper
Fill a six-quart kettle with around

three quarts of water. Add beef, potatoes, and onion. Boil 810 minutes,
then add noodles. Stir often and boil
until noodles are soft. Add salt and
pepper to taste. Remove onion.
Note: More or less water can be
added and more or less noodles. If I
have company we add more to make
a bigger amount.

Autumn Fruit Salad
2 large granny smith apples, cored and sliced
1 can (11 oz.) mandarin orange segments, drained
1 cup (11 ounces) mandarin orange segments,
drained
1 cup halved seedless red grapes
1-1/2 cups miniature marshmallows
1 carton (8 oz.) vanilla low-fat yogurt
2 tablespoons nuts, chopped
Do not peel apples. Core and slice apples, cut
slices into sixths. Combine apples, mandarin oranges and grapes. Add marshmallows and yogurt; mix
gently. Sprinkle nuts over salad. Refrigerate until
ready to serve.
Turkey Pot Pie
2 cups leftover turkey, no skin
1 cup leftover turkey gravy
1 can turkey gravy
1 can cooked potato slices
1 small can cut carrots
2-crust pie crust mix
Make crust as directions state. Divide in half.
Line bottom and sides of a 9x9-inch baking dish.
Combine turkey gravies in a separate bowl. Place
a layer of sliced potatoes, a layer of carrots and a
layer of cooked turkey in pan. Pour on 1/3 of gravy
mixture. Repeat at least once with layers. Pour rest
of gravy and cover with thin rolled pie crust mix.
Prick top crust for steam. Bake at 400 for 15 minutes. Lower oven temperature to 350 and continue
to bake about 40 minutes until brown and bubbly.
EPA proposes age restriction, stricter standards for pesticide application

PUTNAM COUNTY The Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) has proposed a minimum age (18) and stricter
standards for certifying applicators of restricted use pesticides
(RUPs). For commercial applicators in Ohio, there is no distinction between RUP and non-RUP users, hence these new
proposals potentially affect the certification and recertification of all licensed commercial pesticide applicators in Ohio
whether or not they actually use restricted use pesticides.
Private applicators are only required to be licensed in Ohio if
they use RUPs.
Much of what is proposed for the stricter federal standard
is already required by Ohio Law; for example, Ohio pesticide
applicators already take closed book exams, must recertify
on a three-year schedule, and keep pesticide records. The
proposed changes would however significantly increase the
recertification requirements for Ohio pesticide applicators.
The EPA has proposed that all applicators will be required to
take six units (50 minutes) of core plus three (private) or six
(commercial) units per category every three years. An Ohio
commercial applicator licensed in one category who is now
required to take five hours of recertification would have to
attend twelve 50-minute sessions every three years. An Ohio
private applicator licensed in one category who now needs
three hours of training to recertify would have to attend nine
50-minute sessions every three years. Applicators would be
required to present identification at exams and recertification
programs. For private applicators, the fumigation category
would be split into soil and non-soil fumigation categories.

tax returns during a daylong tax webinar and workshop Dec.

VAN WERT In each of the last two years, Trevor

Neate and Colton Snyder were a part of a state-qualifying
Lincolnview cross country team.
This year, as the squads only two seniors, the duo is headed
back once again.
The Lancers placed third as a team at last weekends
Division III Regional Championships in Tiffin and will race
against 15 of the top teams in the state at this Saturdays
OHSAA State Championships, held at National Trail Raceway
in Hebron.
The best part about it is that Trevor and I are the only
two that (will have) ran in all three of our State appearances,
Snyder said. My sophomore and junior years were running
for my senior friends, to give them a chance to run down at
the State meet. This year, to see all of our underclassmen step
it up and give me the chance to run down at State, its just an
amazing experience to share that with Trevor this year.
Though the Lancers are making their third trip in as many
seasons, this years team is unique in its composition.
A lot of people assume that, because its the third year in
a row that its the same group, but its actually very different;
it has been very rewarding, Coach Matt Langdon explained
as his team prepared for a workout at Van Werts Rotary Park.
Theyve had to fight through injuries, theyve had to fight
through other adversities that no one really knows about. They
really shouldnt be here, but they decided that they were going
to be here. Its very cool.
Not one of them is an individual qualifier (Top-16 finish
at Regionals), which is rare; I dont think any other team at the
race this Saturday will have that, Langdon added. For us, we
are truly a team.
The pair of seniors are the only members of the team to
have any experience at National Trail, but Neate says the goal
remains the same.
Last year, we had a lot of upperclassmen; its kind of
different with all of the younger kids that havent been there,
but were still expecting to do well, Neate explained. Being
there for the third straight year is awesome. Colton and I ending our careers there is the most we could ask for. (We just
want) to improve; last year we improved our finish from two
years ago, and hopefully we can improve again this year.
Improvement, for the Lancers, has been a theme. Junior
Austin Elick has been a prime example of how an athlete can
make strides if he or she puts in the work needed.
Probably our No. 1 runner, Austin Elick, last year was a
(junior varsity) kid, and hes taken two-plus minutes off his
time, Langdon said. This part spring, we had a 4x8 relay
that went to State in track, and we had an injury so he had to
fill in. He did a great job for us, and I think that gave him the
confidence that he needed. From that moment, he bought in to
the summer program. He ran all summer, went to camp, did all
of that and came back clearly a different runner. I think that
State track meet, for him, was that missing piece.
He ran 19s and 20s last year, and hes trying to run in the
16s on Saturday, Langdon said. It has been neat to see him
mature in that way.
Members of the cross country team often log 40-50 miles of
running per week during the summer to prepare for the season,
and Neate even ran a half marathon, but once the tournament
trail began, Coach Langdon pulled back on the reigns.
At this point in the season, were trying to have fresh legs,
Langdon explained. We basically cut our mileage down - they
dont run as far. We still do the intensity, the uptempo stuff,
we dont change that, but we make sure that their bodies are
rested for these races. High school team race a lot, we run once
or twice per week, so theyre pretty worn by the end of the
season. When you flip that switch and all of a sudden youre
not doing as many miles, they get a little bounce in their step.
You see it in practice, they have a lot more energy; we kind of
translate that into the races.
One of the Lancers with the most bounce this week is
Snyder. A high-energy young man on or off the course, he
missed six weeks due to injury and only just returned to action
at the Regional meet.
I have an agitated fracture in my foot, which means I fractured my foot at some point, and the pain is finally starting to
catch up with it, Snyder explained. I was supposed to take
10-12 weeks off, but I ended up only taking six and now Im
back into the races.
I came in with some high spirits, Snyder added of his
Regional race, but after only biking for five weeks and only
running for a week prior, my body was not conditioned yet
whatsoever. My throat kind of hurt, running through it; it kind
of hurt going uphill and down hills, but overall it really wasnt
a bad race coming back off injury.
Though he was unable to participate with his teammates,
Snyder did what he could to motivate his squad.
It was definitely really hard, Snyder said of being sidelined. I kept high spirits, I kept yelling at the guys. I dressed
up a couple times, I even ended up videotaping practice this
past week and made a hype video for us - I kept up the energy
for sure, even though I wasnt on the course.
Though temperatures are expected to be roughly 20 degrees
cooler on Saturday than what they have been practicing in this
week, Coach Langdon says thats a benefit to his team.
Last year at State, it was sideways rain and freezing cold
- it was horrible, Langdon said. so when they saw 50s and
partly sunny, they were pretty excited; thats going to be perfect for them.

Ticks in Ohio
American dog ticks, blacklegged ticks and lone star ticks
can all pose a threat to outdoorsmen and women during the fall
hunting seasons.
Unlike pets and humans, wild
animals such as deer are not
affected by the blacklegged tick
and suffer no ill effects from
Lyme disease. Additionally,
Lyme disease cannot be transmitted by the consumption of
venison. Hunters should keep in
mind, however, that hunting and

dressing deer may bring them
into close contact with infected
ticks.
Take the time to learn about
Ohios tick species and how to
protect yourself. If you believe
the tick is a lone star or blacklegged tick, or if you are unable
to identify the tick, you may
send the tick to your local health
department for identification.
To have the tick identified,
it should be saved in a hard
container such as a pill bottle or
film canister. Place a few blades
of grass in the container with
the tick. Containers should be

how difficult it is to beat a
team twice in the same season.
In high school football,
it isnt often the case that
you get the chance to either
sweep or avenge a defeat in
the same season.
Jefferson and Spencerville
will have the chance to do
one or the other, depending
on your perspective.
The Wildcats downed
the Bearcats 26-10 in the
annual Backyard Rivalry in
Spencerville a week ago in
the regular-season finale, giving the Red and White its
15th Northwest Conference
title (either solo or co-championship).
They will do it again
tonight at 7 p.m. at Stadium
Park, this time with a winor-go-home mentality added
to the intensity of the rivalry
in a Region 22 quarterfinal
matchup.

OKLAHOMA STATE: Two teams
whose schedules are back-loaded. Both
can score and neither is tremendously
good on defense. Being at home gives
Cowboys the nod.
ALAMABA: I almost went with
Leonard Fournette and the Bayeaux
Tigers but Alabama generally doesnt
let one-dimensional teams beat them,
especially on the ground. They will
make LSU QB Harris beat them; bet
here says he wont.
AIR FORCE: Threw this one in here
for the Armed Forces. Always good
games with lots of passion and pageantry, being in Colorado Springs is a big
edge for Flying Falcons.
TEXAS TECH: Both teams can score
but Raiders have stopped teams once in
a while. Thats enough.
NORTHWESTERN: Penn State is
not the Penn State of before, though
coach Franklin will get them there.
Northwestern can harass QBs with the
best of them and score just enough for a
big Big 10/12/14 win!

CAROLINA: Not necessarily jumping on the Panthers bandwagon but

Indian Creek Wildlife Area
dedicates renovated archery range
FAYETTEVILLE The newly-renovated Indian Creek Wildlife
Area Archery Range was recently
dedicated during a ribbon-cutting
ceremony.
The nrange offers seven shooting
lanes of 10-, 20-, 30- and 40-yard
stationary targets and an elevated
shooting platform and a broadhead
pit. The range also features an area
dedicated for shooters to bring their
3D targets and also a shooting plat-
form to practice tree stand-simulated

shooting. The range also includes a
14 target walkthrough course with a
shooting platform.
The ranges static targets as
well as the walkthrough course are
mobility accessible and built in
compliance with ADA (Americans
with Disabilities Act) standards,
with mobility accessible walkways,
shooting lines, target paths and 14
target woods course.
ODNR Director James Zehringer
welcomed the crowd and Division of
Wildlife Acting Chief Sue Howard
spoke about the renovation project
as well as future plans for the states
ranges. John Williamoski, Regional
Director for Senator Joe Uecker,
presented Director Zehringer with
a proclamation and state flag for
the range. To highlight the ADA

improvements at the range, members
of the NWTF (National Wild Turkey
Federation) Wheelin Sportsmen cut
the ribbon and opened the range
for shooting. Wheelin Sportsmen
provide people with disabilities,
opportunities to enjoy the outdoors.
The Clermont County River Valley
Longbeards Chapter of the NWTF
provided refreshments for the event.
The range project was funded
with Wildlife Restoration Funds and
is one of the first of many slated for Ohio. Range projects across
the state will receive funds for new
construction, range improvements,
and range modifications. Wildlife
Restoration funding comes from the
Pittman-Robertson (PR) Act enacted by President Franklin Roosevelt
in 1937. The funding source is an

11% federal excise tax on sporting
arms, handguns, ammunitions, bows
and arrows that manufacturers and
sportsmen support to fund conservation. The funding is a reliable source
because it does not come from state
tax dollars. Since the inception of the
PR Act in 1937, it has provided over
$8.4 billion to states including over
$190 million to Ohio for Wildlife
Conservation.
The range is located several
miles east of Fayetteville off of State
Route 50 on Murray Corner Road.

Elidas Nathan Stewart
and Gaerid Littler had hooked
up on a match-winning boys
soccer goal in overtime versus Celina in Thursdays
District finals.
This time, it was the
same combination also in
overtime as the Bulldogs
ousted Oak Harbor 2-1 in a
Division II Regional semifinal at Findlay High Schools
Elmer Graham Memorial
Soccer Stadium.
The only thing different
was we were on opposite
sides, Littler said. I knew
it was coming; Nate can beat
anyone on the flanks and he
got the cross to me. I didnt
have time to settle it or anything; I just 1-touched it and
found the back of the net. I
didnt even see the goal; I
was on the ground. I knew it
went in when everyone started screaming.
The Bulldogs (15-5-1)
advance to play Bay a 3-0
victor over Lexington 3
p.m. Saturday at Ashland. It
will be their first Regional
final since 2002, where they
lost to Bay in penalty kicks.
We have such a chemistry, Stewart explained.
Weve been playing together for a long time. Its such
a great feeling. We had a
game plan to beat these guys
and executed it. We knew
who we had to mark and did.
Its exciting to be going to a
Regional final.

into the first 15-minute sudden-victory overtime, the

On the right side, Stewart
crossed the ball to Littler
just outside the left post;
the orb slightly deflected
off a defender and Littler
1-touched in from the top of
the 6-yard box and into the
goal, causing a mass pile on
the pitch by the Elida team.
We just have been clicking. Our defense was outstanding: our flat-back four
line Oliver (Fessler), Matt
(Cellar), Max (Parker) and
Keegan (Layman) are so
organized back there, Elida
head coach Tom Thomas
said. We knew who their
key guys were; we didnt
change anything as far as tactically but just did a great job
of frustrating their offense.
We never let them get really
comfortable and I think we
frustrated them mentally as
well as physically. It was a
very physical match and the
referee called it that way.
It was a hard-fought match
the entire way and grew
increasingly contentious as
the match wore on.
Only three shots on-goal
occurred in the opening half.
Oak Harbors came at
19:10 as Poirys 23-yard ffort
was denied by Finnerty; and
at 8:25, when Tristan Lacer
chipped a 25-yarder that was

also turned back.
Elidas was at the 10-second mark as Oliver Fessler
launched one from midfield
that Draper denied.
The second half saw the
intensity notch up with a
Regional final on the line.
Draper turned back three
of the four shots he faced:
at 38:45, Austin Morrisons
15-yarder; at 24:35, Riley
Bartels 20-yarder; and 12:30,
when he juggled a top-ofthe-18 from Stewart and
finally controlled.
He didnt at 22:39. This
time, it was Littler assisting Stewart. On the left side,
Littlers try was deflected by
a defender and Stewart got
control for a 12-yarder inside
the post and a 1-nil edge.
Finnerty had denied Nick

but not at 21:10. Nicholas
Damron had dribbled deep

OTTAWA HILLS Fort Jennings opened

the 2015 season with Archbold and controlled
play in a 3-1 win.
Wednesday evening the two teams met
again, this time in the Division III regional
semifinals at Ottawa Hills. And the Blue
Streaks were a much different team than what
the Musketeers saw back in August.
Archbold used a possession type game and
were more physical with the Musketeers than
in the season opener.
This improved style of play helped them
to a 1-0 win over Ft. Jennings in the rematch.
The win sends the Blue Streaks (18-2) to
the Division III regional finals Saturday at
noon against Columbia, a 2-1 shootout winner over Mansfield Christian. Archbold has
won 18 straight contests after dropping their
first two matches. The Musketeers saw their
season end at 16-4.
The tournament atmosphere, and different
playing surfaces, artificial turf instead of
grass, can force a team to play a little different
than they normally would. That was the case
for the Musketeers as the Blue Streaks were
able to take them out of their game and their
physical nature.
We were rushing ourselves and playing
forward almost all of the time. Very seldom
we did we go from touch-line to touch-line
and try to open anything up, Fort Jennings
coach Gregg Luthman said. And that happens in a regional game. They thought just
brawn and muscle would go through with it.
They didnt keep their minds focused on what
they were supposed to be doing and we didnt
make those connections. That first game the
Blue Streaks were not that physical. That was
a big difference between that first game and
this one tonight.
The Blue Streaks physical nature allowed
them to knock Musketeers off the ball and
win more of the 50-50 balls. Their possession
game was also key as they were able to play
the ball to teammates feet to setup scoring
chances.
We knew we had to play our game, keep
the ball on the ground and try to possess,
Archbold coach Sean Stewart said. At times
we did that really well and at times we didnt.
We knew Fort Jennings was going to press us.
They are organized and play hard. We knew
we had to standup to that physically nature
and we knew we had to play our game and
keep the ball on the ground. At times we did
that and at times we didnt.
Archbold was aggressive from the start as
they were able to get two corner kicks, which
they were unable to score on. With 15:01 left
in the opening half the Blue Streaks pressure
paid off as they were able to knock home a
goal.
On the goal, Archbold played a free kick
into the box, where it bounced around before
finding the foot of Austin Welch. He chipped
the ball towards the far post, past a diving
Musketeer goalie Kyle Hellman, where it
deflected off the post and into the net.
There was one push and they got something in, Luthman said. There werent many
shots by them and there werent many shots
by us. They just happened to get one in.
We dont play a lot on turf, but we have
played here three straight times here, so we
are getting used to it, fewer balls are being
wasted Stewart said. Were playing more
balls to feet which you have to do on a surface
like this.
Archbold had three more corner kicks in
the first half, but were unable to knock in
another goal.
Fort Jennings offense was stagnant much
of the first half, but late in the half they were
able to generate a couple of pushes.
Inside of 10 minutes to play junior forward
Troy Ricker was able to make a push down

the right sideline and the in-line towards
the Blue Streak goal. His crossing pass to a
charging teammate on the left side was just
off the mark and Archbold was able to clear
the ball. Ricker created another chance for the
Musketeers around the three minute mark, but
once again his crossing pass was just off the
mark of a teammates foot.
Fort Jennings had a scoring chance seconds into the second half as Alex Berelsman
unleashed a shot off a direct kick into the
waiting arms of Blue Streak keeper Elijah
Robinson. Ft. Jennings was unable to get
another shot on goal and eventually changed
offensive formations, going with three forwards.
With 16:55 left in the contest, the
Musketeers had their best scoring chances.
A Musketeer player played a ball from
the right side into the box where Robinson
hobbled out to collect it. He was unable to
get the ball and Ft. Jennings Brad Rice fired
a shot on goal only to have a Blue Streak
defender kick it back out to where Berelsman
was standing. He settled the ball and fired a
shot that was knocked down by a defender
and cleared.
The team defended brilliantly tonight,
Stewart said. Our back line has been fantastic
all year. Weve only given up seven goals all
year, so obviously theyre doing something
right. We wanted to pressure Fort Jennings up
high because Elijah is struggling with a knee
injury and couldnt move very well, so we
wanted to keep the pressure off him.
The Musketeers had three more looks on
goal in the remaining time, but were unable
to connect.
This was a great battle, Luthman concluded. The kids were fighting for each
other, both teams. It was a great battle, a lot
of heart out there. There were huge hearts out
there for both teams. The excitement didnt
allow the kids to play their regular game.
They play a beautiful ground game and we
play a good ground game, we just never got
it started. Once in a while there were flashes
of it, but nothing consistent because of the
pressure all the time.
To get there, Fort Jennings and Bluffton
were involved in a defensive struggle Saturday
afternoon at Kalida.
The Musketeers were able to get a break
late in the second half and took advantage of
it for a 1-0 Division III district final win over
the Pirates.
This is the second straight year the
Musketeers have won a district championship
by one goal, last year winning in a shootout.
With defense dominating the match,
the Musketeers (16-3-0) got a break when
Bluffton was called for a foul in the penalty
box giving Fort Jennings a penalty kick. Troy
Ricker was the player fouled on the play as
he and Blufftons Anthony Kingsley both
raced to get possession of the ball after a long
pass forward by Fort Jennings. Ricker had a
step on the Bluffton player and Kingsley was
called for the trip of Ricker.
Ricker stepped up and took the penalty
kick, beating Pirate keeper Levi Smith with a
low shot to the left that gave the Musketeers
a 1-0 lead. The Musketeers made that goal
standup in the win.
The game was a tale of two halves due to
the windy conditions Saturday. Bluffton had
the wind at their backs the first half and outshot the Musketeers 6-3 as Musketeer goalie
Kyle Hellman was able to come up with some
key saves in keeping the game scoreless. The
second half saw the Musketeers control the
ball more, but Smith was up to the task of
keeping the Musketeers scoreless until the
penalty kick.
Ft. Jennings outshot the Pirates 7-4 as
Hellman had four saves and Smith had six
saves for Bluffton (12-7-1).

Forgive yourself
That we tend to remember misdeeds years (and sometimes even decades)

after the original offense says something important about us. That is, we are
deeply imbued with a sense of morality, and when we have committed a serious offense, especially one which hurts another person, we may have trouble
getting over the shame and humiliation, even long after the other person has
forgiven us. But what good is holding onto all of that shame and humiliation?
We may never forget the wrong committed, and the other person probably
wont either, if it was something serious, but we should try to find it within
ourselves to forgive ourselves. Jesus died for all of our sins, even the ones we
cant seem to forgive ourselves for, and not forgiving ourselves is tantamount
to not trusting that God has forgiven us. A good question to ask in these circumstances is whether, knowing what you know now, you would still commit
the sin. If the answer is no, then you have learned your lesson and its time to
move on.

Did I hear that right?

Herald Editor Nancy Spencer is on vacation. Chris Looser,
director of graphic services, penned this weeks column.
I love vacations. I love to get away, relax, see my family.
We usually fly and have found that airports are really fascinating places. Depending on which of our kids we are visiting
we are usually surrounded by totally different types of people.
When we visit our son in Florida we are most likely seated
within at least 5 rows of Mickey ears, very excited kiddos on
their way to the Happiest Place on Earth. When we visit our
daughter and fly into Nashville, it is the laid-back southerner
that prevails. Wonder if we will be on a flight with the next
Carrie Underwood as we follow the steady stream of guitar
cases through the terminal. Visiting our daughter who lives in
San Antonio chances are we will be sitting with a rancher or
someone who is visiting a rancher or someone knows someone who lives on a big old Texas ranch.
One of our most interesting flights came as we got settled
in for one of those trips to Texas.
Bob and I buckled up in our seats and learned our takeoff
was being delayed. As usual some of the passengers cant
waste a second of potential phone time! I think people forget
we are in a tiny tube - and I am seated only 2 feet from you.
And so it began
The woman directly behind us was holding a conversation
on her phone that went like this:
Oh my Lord! You cant believe the last few days Ive had
she lamented. (How could I not be interested to politely and
discreetly listen after that comment!)
She continued, When I finished my meeting I checked
into the hotel. I was beat, I mean wrung drier than my laundry!
So I climb into bed and I feel something crawling on me. Dang
bugs! Dang bed bugs!!!! I grab my bags and ran as fast as I
could to the car. I couldnt wait to drive far away from that bug
infested flea hotel! Then, as I am driving away, some lunatic
drives me off the road! I mean he was pushing me over the
curb and here I am on the phone trying to find a place to lay
my head that I wasnt going to wake up with some disease!
If those #@#@ bugs werent going to kill me, some #@#@
driver not paying attention was. Just cant figure out how
some people can have no sense!
I wondered who the real distracted driver was. I immediately began to itch. Hope her bag stowed under my seat wasnt
crawling with hitchhiking bugs! Commotion at the front of
the plane got my mind off the infestation I was sure was right
below me.
A group of men had boarded who looked like they had
enjoyed a few relaxing beverages. One of their party hadnt
made it to the plane yet, and his friends on-board were getting
a bit concerned. They asked the flight attendants if they can
go find their companion since he wasnt answering his phone.

As summer winds down and fall approaches, something
begins to weigh heavily on my mind. Its something that
never really leaves completely, although it may not seem quite
as prevalent during the non-school months. Im referring to
bullying.
I find it heartbreaking that any child endures bullying, and
I do remember it happening all those millions of years ago
when I was in school. I do not, however, recall it happening
to the extent it does now, and thats only because of the lovely
double-edged sword of technology. When I was in school,
if a kid was made fun of, it happened during school hours
and ended when the final bell rang. Now, any student can be
exposed to relentless bullying twenty-four hours a day. With
the invention of texting, Facebook, Twitter, and a number of
other social network sites, kids can now be targeted nonstop
and by multiple bullies, all at once. Aint technology grand?
Well, technology itself is not to blame, obviously. That
would be like saying school is to blame for the verbal abuse
these kids take. Who or what is to blame then? The bullies
themselves? And who or what is to blame for their behavior?
Their parents? Although its not quite that simple or black and
white. Because many children are being neglected and not
properly raised today, (which is a whole other topic) who are
we pointing fingers at? Absent parents? The school? Whats
the solution?
No, really, what is the solution? That was not a rhetorical
question. I think we can very well turn to parents when it
comes to their kids leading the taunting of a victim, but if parents are, indeed, largely absent when it comes to teaching their
children right from wrong, love from hate, acceptance from

According to Curth, the center will be able to
purchase two new vans in the spring.
Bob Wright and Leonard Jarman run the centers Chore Service which offers lawn mowing,
leaf raking, snow shoveling, gutter cleaning and
inside help as well, such as flipping mattresses,
changing light bulbs, washing windows and
walls and removing Christmas trees.
Part of the anniversary activities include a

celebration of the life of former director Joyce
Hale, who retired in June and sadly passed away
in October at the age of 80.
Goodwin said she is going to miss her mentor.
Joyce got things done, Goodwin said. She
headed the renovations and the addition of the
garage and kept up with day-to-day issues. She
has done a lot for this agency and weve learned
a lot from her. She taught us how to treat our
members and see to their needs and sometimes
even anticipate them.
The center is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Brown introduces bill to crack down

on employers who misclassify workers
and cheat them out of earned benefits
employ some of the lowest-paid and most vulnerable

American workers.
We should call this what
it is: fraud, Brown said.
We see it in industries from
trucking and construction, to
service sectors like landscaping and home health care. If
employees are classified as
independent contractors, then
an employer doesnt have to
pay them overtime or contribute to their Social Security
or Medicare benefits. When
companies cheat tax law and
misclassify employees, workers lose, honest businesses
lose, and taxpayers lose. This
is unfair to workers, unfair to
businesses that play by the
rules, and it must stop.
By paying workers underthe-table or classifying
workers as independent contractors rather than employees under Federal tax law,
employers can avoid providing workers with earned
wages, benefits, and health
and safety protections. This
practice not only allows
employers to deny workers
overtime, workers compensation, and Social Security or
Medicare benefits, but also
cheats the Federal government and State of Ohio out of
billions in tax revenue, while
putting businesses that play
by the rules at a competitive
disadvantage.
The Fair Playing Field
Act would address worker
misclassification by ensuring
that full-time employees are
no longer misclassified. The
bill would reduce the deficit
by $5.7 billion over the next
decade. Specifically, the bill
would:
Require the Internal
Revenue Service (IRS) to
clarify the rule determining

the Federal tax employment
status of a worker; and offer
guidance to make this distinction easier for employees
and employers to decipher;
End the moratorium on
the IRS prospectively reclassifying workers;
Require employers to
notify independent contractors of their tax obligations
and the workplace protections that do not apply to
them;
Allow independent contractors who have concerns
about their classification to
seek a determination of their
proper employment status
from the IRS;
Protect professional services employees who are
independent contractors by
choice from being reclassified; and
Protect employers who
follow the rules by retaining
the safe harbor that prohibits
the IRS from retroactively
assessing a workers classification if an employer had a
reasonable basis for classifying a worker as an independent contractor.
Earlier this week, Brown
and the U.S. Secretary of
Labor Thomas E. Perez
spoke to a group of workers, including a former FedEx
employee one of 2,300
drivers who were part of a
lawsuit in which a Federal
court ruled that the company
misclassified its employees.
The workers discussed how
worker misclassification has
denied them access to the
wages, benefits, and health
and safety protections they
have earned.
